Endurance In Extremity (Tales Of Stubborn Survival Or Persistence)

I may be wrong about. A 2CV only has 2 sizes of nuts and/or bolts and 2 sizes of screws.
I think you'll find that (because French) 2CVs have multiple different sizes of nuts and bolts, and screws, sometimes on the opposite corners of the one item, like the manifold.
Check out Hubnut trying to work on his 2CV 'Elly' at various times and him cussing about it.

IIRC it was the Austin Morris Mini which was designed such that it could be worked on with the minimum amount of tools to hand, mainly a half-inch spanner and a crosshead screwdriver.

Also, somewhere, there is the tale of the chap who, when stranded 'out in the sticks', turned his broken 2CV into a motorbike.

Heinz are now searching for him to help him buy him a new boat

From Twitter:

The appeal comes just a month after his sailboat was spotted from the air 120 nautical miles northwest of La Guajira peninsula.

They’ve found him

Heinz told CNN on Monday that they found Francois with the help of local reporters in Dominica working for the publication EmoNews. The company had previously said that they hoped to gift him “a new, state-of-the-art boat” to celebrate his safe return.

“We were able to connect with him and discuss the best way help support him and his family,” a Heinz representative told CNN. “We (Heinz) and Elvis are currently working out the logistical details of gifting him his new boat.”

Not a whiner!

A 48-year-old woman survived five days stranded in the bush in Australia by eating sweets and drinking a single bottle of wine.

Lillian Ip set off on what was meant to be a short trip on Sunday, travelling through dense bush in Victoria state. But she hit a dead-end after taking a wrong turn, and her vehicle became stuck in the mud.

Ms Ip - who doesn't drink - only had a bottle of wine in the car as she was planning to give it as a present. After five nights stranded, she was discovered by emergency services on Friday as they flew overhead as part of a search.

"The first thing coming in my mind, I was thinking 'water and a cigarette,'" Ms Ip told 9News Australia. "Thank god the policewoman had a cigarette. I thought I was going to die there. My whole body shut down on Friday," she said, adding that she "was about to give up".

Even more remarkable given the ages of the survivors.

BOGOTA (Reuters) - Four children from an Indigenous community in Colombia were found alive in the south of the country more than two weeks after the plane they were traveling in crashed in thick jungle, President Gustavo Petro said on Wednesday.

The children were rescued by members of the military, firefighters and civil aviation authority officials in the dense jungle of Colombia’s

The plane - a Cessna 206 - was carrying seven people on a route between Araracuara, in Amazonas province, and San Jose del Guaviare, a city in Guaviare province, when it issued a Mayday alert due to engine failure in the early hours of May 1.
“After arduous searching by our military, we have found alive the four children who went missing after a plane crash in Guaviare. A joy for the country,” Petro said in a message via Twitter.

Three adults, including the pilot, died as a result of the crash and their bodies were found inside the plane. The four children, aged 13, 9 and 4, as well as an 11-month-old baby, survived the impact. ...

I smell a rat here. How did children survive when the adults didn't? Perhaps the kids were all strapped into their seats and this saved them from the impact, but the adults weren't.

Also, how did the 11 month-old live through two weeks in the jungle, even with a sensible 13 year-old present? Kids that age can't fend for themselves and need a lot of care.

Just being alert enough at night to stop a toddler who's woken up from wandering off is a task if you have no doors to lock.
This also applies to 7 and 4-year-olds, although a the older child might be more amenable to reason about the need to stay put.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were locals in the jungle who took care of these children until help arrived.

Bear in mind that the children were from an indigenous community themselves, and probably had some level of survival skills. There may well have been usable supplies in the wreckage too.

Update:
Actually, there is disagreement over whether they really were found alive.

Yup, I did note all that. They're still kids though.
There might have been something of use in the wreckage but there were also three dead bodies in there which would have presented a horrifying spectacle in the heat of the jungle.

If they didn't receive outside help, perhaps they are all closely enough related to want to support each other.

See my post update above, they might not have been found alive after all. Also, it is entirely possible in an indigenous setting that a 13-year old girl is the baby's mother... I hope not, but it's possible.

Oh no, hadn't seen that. Sounds like it's all wishful thinking then. :(

Latest update on Schrodinger's children, with some extra detail, ftom CNN:

Clues suggest children survived Colombian jungle plane crash as officials race to find them

The search continues.

A desperate search for four children who have been missing since their plane crashed in the Colombian jungle on 1 May has yielded new clues.

Items belonging to the siblings, who are aged between 11 months and 13 years, have been found in two different locations in the rainforest. Their mother and the other adults on board the plane died in the crash.

But search teams say small footprints found last week indicate that the children survived the impact. The footprints were spotted on Thursday and specialists said most likely belonged to the children.

Earlier last week, search teams had found a child's drinking bottle, a pair of scissors and a hair tie, as well as what appeared to be a makeshift shelter made from branches and a half-eaten passion fruit.

The children belong to the Huitoto indigenous group and members of their community have expressed the hope that their knowledge of fruits and jungle survival skills will have given them a better chance of surviving the ordeal.

But despite more than 100 soldiers combing the jungle, no further traces were found until the early hours of Wednesday. The latest items were spotted by an indigenous woman some 500m (1,640ft) from the crash site. ...

Something about this tale reeks. Native kids being flown across the Amazon forest in the small hours. They've been found! They haven't been found...

The mother of four children rescued after 40 days in the Amazon jungle was alive for four days after their plane crashed.

Magdalena Mucutuy told her children to leave and find help as she lay dying. Speaking to reporters, the children's father, Manuel Ranoque, said his eldest daughter told him their mother urged them to "get out" and save themselves.

The siblings, aged 13, nine, five, and one, were rescued and airlifted out of the jungle on Friday. They were moved to a military hospital in the nation's capital Bogota.

"The one thing that [13-year-old Lesly] has cleared up for me is that, in fact, her mother was alive for four days," Mr Ranoque told reporters outside the hospital.

"Before she died, their mum told them something like, 'You guys get out of here. You guys are going to see the kind of man your dad is, and he's going to show you the same kind of great love that I have shown you," he said.

Details have been emerging about the children's time in the jungle and their miraculous rescue - including the first things the children said when they were found.

Rescue worker Nicolás Ordóñez Gomes recalled the moment they discovered the children.

Colombia plane crash: New video shows lost children found in Amazon

Newly released video shows the first moments four missing children were found alive after surviving a plane crash. They had spent weeks fending for themselves in the Amazon jungle in Colombia. Rescuers can be seen tending to the children in the footage, with one man cradling a child in his arms.

Two pilots and the children's mother and were killed when their light aircraft crashed on 1 May. Now the rescue dog has gone missing. Was he eaten by the kids?

The Colombian military has left 70 soldiers in the Amazon jungle to look for a beloved search dog who helped them rescue a group of missing children earlier this month.

Key points:

  • The Belgian Shepherd got separated from the search party after he sped off into the forest following a scent
  • The rescued children told the Colombian military that Wilson spent a couple of days with them when they were missing
  • A group of 70 soldiers are searching for Wilson using food and female dogs to lure him

With his powerful snout and his pointy ears, Wilson became a national hero in Colombia when he led the military to four Indigenous children who had survived a plane crash and were lost in the Amazon jungle for 40 days.

But the Belgian Shepherd went missing during the search and is now himself the focus of a sophisticated rescue operation that started soon after the four young survivors — aged between 11 months and 13 years — where flown on a helicopter to Bogota.

The military commanders said they would not leave the remote area until their soldiers return home with the star canine.

"For us, it was an honour that our canine helped to find those children," said Sergeant Luis Fernando Seña, the commander of the canine school in Bogota where Wilson was trained for 14 months.

That was him. I really, really hope they can say he died quickly. I don't want him, or anyone, to die slowly, lost and alone

A happy outcome.

A Canadian teenager has been found two days after she went missing in the wilderness of a vast provincial park.

Esther Wang, 16, disappeared after she was separated from her hiking group in the 555sq km (214sq mile) Golden Ears Park in British Columbia. Authorities launched a mammoth 54-hour search that included a helicopter, a drone and 16 search teams. But the teen emerged uninjured from a trail on her own on Friday.

Police said Ms Wang was recovering with her family.

"She's healthy, she's happy, she is with family. That's the best possible outcome for us," Royal Canadian Mounted Police Supt Wendy Mehat said in a statement. "Esther's family has expressed sincere gratitude to all first responders and Search and Rescue groups," Supt Mehat added. "They are very thankful for this outcome and request privacy at this time."

Officials said Ms Wang emerged from the East Canyon trail on which she had initially gone missing at around 21:30 local time on Friday (04:30 GMT Saturday). It is unclear how she was separated from her group. Local media reported that the group left a lookout point around 14:45 on Tuesday, and realised that Ms Wang was not with them around 15 minutes later.
