I'm late with this one, but I've only just come across it:

Flora Day move to Falmouth trial to boost tourism
Last updated 12:12 Wednesday 1 April 2015

A leaked briefing note has highlighted major and shocking changes to Cornwall’s “cultural calendar” following the privatisation of Visit Cornwall, with the suggestion that Flora Day be moved to Falmouth.
A new body, Cornwall Association for Services, Hospitality, Culture, and Official Welcome, raised concerns that the event had outgrown Helston, and that following the success of the Tall Ship’s Regatta in Falmouth, the town was better placed to host the the event if “strategic tourism development objectives are to be realised”.

etc... :D

Nice one!

It's that time of year again. And some people have started early.

Jessica Lowndes, 27, and Jon Lovitz, 58, convinced several media outlets[...] that they were in a romantic May-December relationship in an April Fools' Day prank.

The CW's 90210 reboot star and the Saturday Night Live alum posted a series of Instagrams and Tweets from their branded accounts, indicating they were dating despite a 31-year age difference, before revealing the images and video clips were part of a music video for Lowndes' new song, Deja Vu, and an elaborate marketing stunt.

Nice one on pub giant Wetherspoons facebook page this morning revealing a future plot in BBC soap Eastenders where they take over the local pub the Queen Vic

One of the Cornish papers has a (boringly long) story claiming that the towns of St Ives and Hayle are to merge within one boundary. Admittedly they are not that far apart, geographically, but they have very different histories.
(St Ives was mainly a fishing village, which then attracted visitors and arty-farty types, while Hayle was an industrial town at the height of the Industrial Revolution, specialising in iron ship building and copper smelting.)

I tried to prank my Mum with a lie about being sacked fom my job today. She disclaimed, "how tiresome." Thought my son-schtick would last forever. She's finally outgrown me. Gah.

I was pleased to see this:

Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth is reported to be having under sand heating installed to make it an all-year-round holiday destination.

The Falmouth Packet says the pilot scheme begins on 1 April and includes the installation of two large commercial gas boilers, 30 heating outlets and metres of under floor heating pipework installed. :D

I so want this to be true.
Dammit ... I just came on to post this lol ... it's weird to me at least that I'm a Big Bruce fan and John Hurt fan, add to that that Hurty doesn't live far from me and he's going to be the next doctor. I stopped really giving a shit about Dr Who after Tom Baker.

By a slight coincidence, when I saw Bruce Campbell (he was taking questions after a screening of "My name is Bruce" in Edinburgh), I very nearly asked him if he'd like a jelly baby. But instead some pillock a few rows back asked him a stupid question about shit-flavoured ice cream and then time was up.

I've always been a fan of the first Evil Dead film more than a Bruce Campbell fan Tribble ... the star of the first film was off camera and was called Sam Raimi, after that, the trilogy evolved into a cult of Bruce thing. I'm certainly not slagging Bruce off, far from it ... I've got quite a few factory sealed mint condition action figures of him from different companies (including a nodding head Ash that you'd put in the back of your car) ... I just think the original film was a different beast that jettisoned the subsequent sequels into what they've now become ..

I'm currently aching to buy this but adult responsibilities are prohibiting me ... there's never been an Evil Dead Delta 88 toy made before (trust me, I know), this one's a custom and to exact scale to my replica Evil Dead 2 model cabin ...

Looking at the Independent's website last night it seemed to me that by the headlines alone, about a third of news stories may have been April Fool's jokes. I just couldn't tell. I think they spin headlines so much now in a desperate attempt to get you to click on them, that all of the news sounds like a joke.

Unless it's outright horror, but that gets the clicks as well.

The BBC is set to announce plans to withdraw the UK from the Eurovision Song Contest, in a move which will anger and dismay nearly half of all Brits. Plans are afoot for Scotland to compete by itself.

PinkNews understands that the withdrawal will come into effect in the first few months of 2019, meaning the UK will have just two more shots at the trophy.

Eurovision will also not be shown on the BBC past next year, after months of tempestuous negotiations broke down last night.

A source close to BBC director-general Tony Hall said the Prime Minister had forced his hand by instructing the corporation this week to make at least £350,000 in annual cuts.

Hall felt he had no choice but to drastically reduce the BBC’s payments into the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)- which the same source said stands at close to £350,000 this year, up from £310,000 in 2010.

Swedish and Norwegian newspapers announced on Friday that they would refrain from the tradition of publishing April Fools' Day jokes this year over fears that it might spread "fake news".

Magnus Karlsson, editor-in-chief at Swedish daily Smålandsposten said on its website that he doesn't want the newspaper's brand "to be spread with a potentially viral and erroneous story".

"We work with real news. Even on April 1st," he said.

The "fake news" phenomenon broke out amid the 2016 US presidential election and grew even further when Donald Trump, during his first press conference on January 11th as then president-elect, shouted at a CNN reporter: "You are fake news!"

Sweden was a victim of "fake news" when Fox News in February interviewed a "security and defence expert" who turned out to have criminal convictions in the US and no connections to the Scandinavian nation's security services, Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter reported.

Now, several local daily Swedish newspapers including Dalarnas Tidningar, Hallpressen and Västerbottens-Kuriren have refrained from publishing April Fools' Day jokes.

"Historically, we've had super successful April Fools jokes. But because of debates and discussions about the media's credibility being connected to fake news, we didn't want to do it this year," Ingvar Näslund, editor-in-chief at Västerbottens-Kuriren told Swedish news agency TT.

Penguins in university robes.

Dundee University is offering students the chance to p-p-p-pick up the world’s first degree in penguin studies.

The university unveiled the masters degree in penguin studies on Saturday, April 1.

The inter-disciplinary postgraduate course will allow students to explore the world of penguins up close and gain hands-on experience of penguin rearing.

Modules will include “Penguinese – the language of penguins” and “Did penguins ever fly?”

Students will also be given their own penguin to look after for the duration of the 12-month course.

They will also be asked to examine the role of penguins in popular culture, from the child-friendly animation of Happy Feet to the satirical examination of post-Soviet Ukraine in Andrei Kurkov’s 1996 novel Death and The Penguin.

Due the anticipated demand for places on the course, applications will only be accepted between midnight and 12 noon on Saturday.

Penguin enthusiasts can apply by visiting www.uod.ac.uk/penguins

Anyone wishing to apply must be able to prove they have suitable living space, such as a bath, for a growing penguin and a ready supply of fish.

Dr Ramanee Peiris, senior penguinologist and course leader, said: “It’s a dream come true to finally reveal our course.

“It’s a bit of a shame that our application period is only open for 12 hours but it will do for now.

“Allowing for an unprecedented opportunity to students across the world, the Penguin Studies MSc will enable never-before-seen interaction between academia and our feathery friends.”
According to website penguinworld.com, there are 17 distinct species of penguin.

Despite being named after the bird, there is no proven link between penguins and the chocolate biscuit of the same name, which were first made in Glasgow in 1932.

It is believed penguins have existed for at least 30 years longer.

Plans to reopen Cornwall's mines for ambitious tube train service Kernow Express
By WBCaroline | Posted: April 01, 2017

Cornwall has long been famous for making money from its underground resources thanks to tin and china clay and now it is set to send its transport network below the surface.
In a plan which is more credible than Ross Poldark's scheme to reopen Wheal Leisure, Cornwall could have its own tube train service in less than 10 years.

Olaf Priol, of King Jo holiday company, said they had been speaking to pet stores, chefs and clothing outlets about the plan to launch the Kernow Express by 2025.

The Department for Transport has been ignoring Cornwall's road and rail network to concentrate on an "integrated underground transport network".

Plan to surround Smeaton's Tower in student flats
By Plymouth Herald | Posted: April 01, 2017

Developers have revealed plans to turn Plymouth's iconic Smeaton's Tower into luxury student flats.
Six stunning circular apartments are planned for the former lighthouse itself, while an adjoining block to be called "Smeaton Towers" will provide 200 more.

The development is being hailed as the perfect way to accommodate more students by making use of a redundant building on an isolated site.
To avoid detracting from the tower itself, the adjoining modern block will be clad with matching red and white stripes.

Plans have been drawn up by Flair & Pool Architects on behalf of developers Weare J. King Ltd.

Trump Dublin: US president buys Liberty Hall to build 5-star hotel
Trump International Holdings to build 32-storey structure

about 7 hours ago Updated: about 4 hours ago

Liberty Hall in Dublin City Centre has been purchased a business controlled by US president Donald Trump

Dublin is set to get its very own Trump Tower after the sale of Liberty Hall in the capital to a company connected to the controversial US president.

The 16-storey building, owned by the State’s largest trade union Siptu, has been a feature of the Dublin skyline since its completion in 1965 but plans are now under way to convert it into a five-star city centre hotel bearing the name of the American commander in chief.

In plans seen by The Irish Times, Trump International Holdings wants to renovate the existing structure and build a wider, taller skyscraper that will also feature shops, apartments, office space, underground parking, an open-air putting green on the top floor, a plaza on Eden Quay, and a canopy and signage over the main entrance. An application has been submitted to Dublin City Council and will be open to public consultation in the coming weeks. ...

Open university: Luas takes detour through Trinity

April 1 2017 2:30 AM

A major error in the laying of the new Luas line through parts of Dublin city centre means the track is too wide.

The new joined-up track running around College Green was built based on designs for trams in 1916, rather than the 2016 model.

However, the new cross-city line will still open on time this summer, as it will now run through the middle of Trinity College campus.

The Trinity Luas stop will be based at the iconic belltower on the Campanile.

The development will make the Trinity courtyard the focal point for all public transport in Dublin city centre. ...
