World’s Dirtiest Man: 80-Year-Old Iranian Man Hasn’t Bathed in 60 Years

80-year-old Haji believes that “cleanliness brings him sickness.” That’s why he hasn’t bathed at all in the past 60 years. He lives in isolation in Dejgah village, in the Southern Iranian province of Fars.

Haji hates contact with water. Even the suggestion of a bath makes him very angry. And all these years of escaping bath time have taken their toll – Haji is almost the color of earth. He has managed to completely blend in with his surroundings. In fact, it’s easy to mistake him for a rock statue if he sits very still.

It’s not just bathing that Haji dislikes. His disgust for fresh food and clean drinking water is unmistakable. Instead, he prefers his favorite meal of rotten porcupine meat. He drinks 5 liters of water a day for health purposes, but only from a large rusty oil can. He likes to fill his smoking pipe with animal feces instead of tobacco. To trim his hair he doesn’t use clippers; he just burns it off over an open flame. An old war helmet keeps his head warm during the winter.

Haji doesn’t really have a house – the earth is his home. He lives in a hole in the ground, much like a grave, to keep him grounded and in touch with the reality of life. Sometimes he sleeps in an open brick shack that the villagers constructed for him out of pity. Locally, he is known as Amou Haji. ‘Amou’ is the Farsi term of endearment for a kind old man.

Makes you think about what’s really important in life, doesn’t it?

Obviously, this regime has helped him live a long time.

His poor wife!

I reckon Don McCullin's Aldgate Irishman would win hands down in a dirt fight.

Any sort of fight, for that matter.

Yes. That is the most filthy man I've ever seen. Ever.

'World's dirtiest man' dies shortly after taking first bath in over 50 years

An Iranian man nicknamed the "dirtiest man in the world" for living in filth and not washing for decades has died at the age of 94, state media reported on Tuesday.

Amou Haji, who did not wash for more than half a century, died on Sunday in the village of Dejgah in the southern province of Fars

For decades he had avoided eating fresh food and showering over fears of getting sick.

But "for the first time a few months ago, villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash," [it was] reported.

“Not long after, he fell ill and finally, on Sunday… he gave up his life,” it reported.

Though Amou Hajji had never married and apparently had no family, the eccentric was viewed with some affection by local villagers, who reportedly built him a cinderblock shack so he would stop sleeping in a hole in the ground.

He became an object of curiosity in recent years, with people posting video of his strange behaviour, which included smoking up to five cigarettes at once, or smoking dung from a metal plumbing joint.

Among the lore surrounding him it was claimed that he ate roadkill – preferring rotten porcupine meat – and drank five litres of water a day collected from puddles in a rusty pail.

Despite this unorthodox lifestyle, his constitution remained robust until recently, with reports earlier this year that a team of doctors from Tehran had examined him and found him to be in good health.

For dirt you are, and to dirt you shall return

An Iranian hermit nicknamed the “world’s dirtiest man” for not taking a shower for more than half a century has died at the healthy old age of 94, state media has reported.

Irna news agency reported that “Amou Haji”, an endearing nickname for an elderly person, died on Sunday in the village of Dejgah in the southern province of Fars.

Haji, covered in soot and living in a cinder-block shack, was reported by local media not to have bathed with water or soap in more than 60 years. Villagers said he had experienced “emotional setbacks in his youth” that led him to refuse to wash.

In 2014, the Tehran Times reported that Haji would eat roadkill, smoke a pipe filled with animal excrement, and believed that cleanliness would make him ill. Photos showed him smoking multiple cigarettes at once.

But a few months ago, villagers had persuaded him to wash for the first time, Irna reported.

After Haji’s death, the unofficial record could go to an Indian man who also had not bathed for much of his life.

In 2009 the Hindustan Times reported that Kailash “Kalau” Singh, from a village outside the holy city of Varanasi, had not washed for more than 30 years in an attempt to help end “all the problems confronting the nation”.

He would reject water in favour of what he called a “fire bath”. “Every evening as villagers gather, Kalau … lights a bonfire, smokes marijuana and stands on a leg praying to Lord Shiva,” the paper said.

Singh was reported to have said: “It’s just like using water to take a bath. Fire bath helps kill all the germs and infections in the body.”

I love that. I think I'm going to adapt that philosophy and approach.

'Ascalon, in an attempt to help end “all the problems confronting the nation", spent more than 30 years drinking only 12 year old, single pot, whiskey, as he felt its purity would surely be recognised by some passing benevolent spirit,' reported the Arseholeofnowhere Journal.

We'll have it put on your headstone.

He was 94! Coincidence I think.

Unless he was also traumatized by the villagers taking him to wash. No idea how this was handled. Was he forced and/or manhandled? 94 is elderly. Did he get an infection from possible skin tears he could have experienced from "washing"? People, as they age, their skin becomes thin and fragile. This is why elderly people bruise easily and need gentle handling. Especially at 94.
