Chat Bot, Art Bot, Book Bot - AI in Arts and Education

Artificial Intelligence affects all societies around the globe. From March 21-23 2019 the Goethe-Institut Irland will facilitate talks and discussions about the developments, chances and challenges facing us in how AI-technologies affect the activities of cultural organizations in arts and education.

Thursday, 21 March 2019, 6:30 pm

Film-Screening with Q&A

To kick-off the event, the Goethe-Institut will screen the award-winning documentary "Pre-Crime", which looks at AI and policing. Directed by Monika Hielscher and Matthias Heeder, the film calls into question data-collection for preventive screening of potential future delinquents. In doing so, it raises the fundamental questions of whether the global increase in security measures justifies the full monitoring of private individuals and how our world of work changes with AI.

Three experts will speak on three major areas affected increasingly by the use of AI technologies that are especially of concern for cultural organization: reading, arts and translation. Mattis Kuhn will discuss the use of AI technologies in the arts. How do artists use AIs as tools to create art? What new forms of art emerge from AI? Mattis Kuhn is a German artist and curator. He curated the exhibition “I am here to learn” on AI in the arts at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in 2018 where he brought together works by artists from all over the world.

Machine Translation

Andy Way, Professor in Computing at DCU and Deputy Director of the ADAPT Centre of Digital Content Technology, has been researching on systems of machine translation over several decades now. He will talk about the possibilities and limits of automatic translation systems. ADAPT is a Dublin-based research centre focusing on digital content and digital technologies.
