Call me crazy, but this whole firemen's strike is a tad worrying, when one looks at it in perspective.
The FBU demands a 40% pay rise. Even their supporters gulp.
The Government cannot give in. They play the moral card. They stand resolute.
After the predictible few deaths the media link to the strikes, the FBU changes its position. The moral card trumps them.
Call me crazy,
But isn't it possible that the FBU strikes were Deliberately engineered by the Blair Government? To boost public confidence in them (public services?) they initiate a strike, ultra-covertly. They know that the 40% pay rise, the deaths that a strike will cause, and the looming War will all undermine their FBU position with relatively little energy on their part. The Media can do that.
When the FBU repents its position, the Government comes out strong and defiant in face of union militancy, other unions are discouraged (handy for dissatisfied public services) and the Government could even push to stop firefighters ever striking again in the future.
So: Big Gains for the Government accross the board: enhanced public image and greater control over unions being the chief ones.
Where there's smoke there's fire...
