Huge Headless Buddha Statue Found Under Building In China

A massive statue of Buddha - minus its head - has been found propping up an apartment block in China.

According to reports, many residents of the building were completely unaware it was there -only when some vegetation was cleared was the the 'one-thousand-year-old' statue revealed.

The huge Buddha, standing at nine metres high, was uncovered at the residential building in Chongqing.

The statue doesn't have a head, is in a sitting position and has two hands on its abdomen. One of its feet is also very badly damaged.

A resident said there was a temple in the area 'many years ago', but that was demolished when they started building residential complexes in the 1980s. The resident added: "I heard the Buddha statue was built nearly a thousand years ago."

Very sad that they destroyed such a beautiful piece of history to build that poorly-constructed monstrosity on top.

Maybe it was damaged before the complex built?

(Nothing says humility like a huge statue).

at any rate it will put up property prices now.

Looking at the stocky build of the remaining figure, plus an open robe, I'd say it was more likely to have been a Budai statue than a depiction of Buddha. Pretty solid foundations!
