Neiman Marcus Hawks Mermaid Suits as Xmas Gifts
By Jon Herskovitz

DALLAS (Reuters) - Go back to nature this Christmas by wrapping your loved ones in mermaid suits and dropping them off in a luxury hut specially designed for ice fishing.

These items were part of the offerings in the seasonal collection of over-the-top excess and highly refined luxury items also known as the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book, which was released on Tuesday.

"Neiman Marcus is known for luxuries and that is really what we have concentrated on," said Brendan Hoffman, the chief executive of Neiman Marcus Direct. "Our customers might be buying less than they did in past years, but they have not traded down."

The company operates 35 Neiman Marcus Stores across the United States and two Bergdorf Goodman stores in Manhattan

The mermaid suit is custom-designed and comes in hip-hugging gold fish-scale for a mere $10,000. The person who wears it is all but immobile on land, but will be given instructions on how to swim like a mermaid in the sea.

"The suit works wonderfully in the water," said Thom Shouse, its designer.

The luxury home for ice fishing sells for $27,000 and comes with a high-powered furnace, built-in beds and six holes in the floor where fishing lines can be dropped through the ice. To add a nice touch to the interior, the company is separately offering a crystal chandelier that is designed to look like a bough of Japanese cherry blossoms for just under $25,000.

Nothing speaks about the glory of nature like a massive piece of agricultural art. Artist Stan Herd can arrange plants, rocks and soil to turn a field covering several acres into a nice portrait or a recreation of a Renoir painting that is best viewed on an aerial fly over.

Prices start at $160,000.

The most expensive item in the catalog is a Bombardier Learjet for just under $13 million. Other vehicles include the ultra high-powered Dodge Tomahawk motorcycle that cannot be legally operated on public roads but still sells for $555,000 and a limited edition BMW 6 Series coupe for $75,170 that comes with optional driving tours in Germany.

A nature item that may come as a surprise to environmentalists are 24-speed mountain bikes for $795 each from the makers of the Hummer, a vehicle that some people deride for its gas-guzzling qualities.

Among the less expensive items are a silver-plated paperweight for $15 and a really tasty pecan pie at $30.

And then there is the "his and hers" item in the form of a pair of robots for $400,000. The robots can sing, leave messages for the kids and display dance moves that may remind some people of the wooden style of former Vice President Al Gore

I had too check : The Dodge Tomahawk :blah:

That really is quite some bike - looks very Judge Dredd to me.

As to the mermaid suits i'd imagine it'd work in the same way that flippers make it very easy to swim and tread water - One big fin. Might take a bit of getting used to though i know a friend with a big mermaid fetish who'd love one. She spends an alarming amount of time computer-altering photos of herself to add mer-features. Strange girl:(

Pleasurama's London Dolphinarium, at 65 Oxford Street, opened its doors to the public in 1971, as an up-market striptease revue featuring dancing "aquamaids" and several dolphins confined to a tank 3m deep, 14m long and 5m wide.

In his book Doctor in the Zoo, David Taylor writes that the male dolphins had to be treated with anti-androgens to prevent them making passionate advances to the mermaid showgirls.

Mermaids beware!

Sounds like something for the person who always wanted a job a Weeki Wachee springs.

(urk, looks like they're following another old style Florida attraction, Cypress Gardens into bankruptcy...)
