Mystery Craters In Siberian Permafrost Region

Mystery explosion leaves 50-deep crater in Russia’s Arctic tundra amid UFO conspiracy theories ...

The Siberian Times article on this latest such crater (supposedly the 17th in recent times):

https://siberiantimes.com/other/oth...-metre-deep-crater-opens-up-in-arctic-tundra/

... includes more photos - including photos of an emerging and cracking mound (pingo) which precedes the presumably explosive creation of the crater or hole.

This article (and the related ScienceAlert item cited below) refer to such craters using labels I don't recall seeing before:

- hydrolaccoliths
- bulgunnyakhs
- "funnels"

Interesting BBC video here about what's happening to the land in Siberia:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-54195656
It shows that as the permafrost melts, the land is subsiding in some places and swelling up into domes in others. These domes may eventually explode and then collapse into sinkholes.
