Drunken dog sleeps it off in animal shelter; master charged with public intoxication

Thursday, January 29, 2004
State Gazette

A pooch and his owner apparently had too much to drink Friday night and both ended up in the slammer.

The dog, a cocker spaniel, was "wobbly and his eyes were bloodshot red," said Derrick Avery, supervisor of the Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society's animal shelter.

It was a first for the folks at the animal shelter. Avery said the shelter hasn't ever been asked to pick up a drunken dog.

It all began about 6:32 p.m. Friday when the Newbern Police Department received a call from a downtown restaurant about a woman with a small dog. The woman appeared to be intoxicated and was cursing, Capt. Jim Richards said, reading from the police report.

The woman left the restaurant and was spotted at the corner of Main and Washington streets, where she and her dog were apprehended, Richards said.

The woman - Glenda Jane Davis, 43, of the 300 block of Parks Street in Newbern - was charged with public intoxication and taken to the Dyer County Jail. Richards said she was released after paying a 0 bond. She pleaded guilty Monday in Newbern Municipal Court and paid a fine and in court costs.

The dog was released to Davis on Saturday, but not before being treated for an apparent hangover. Avery said the dog was "laid out the next day." He said he gave the dog an aspirin and the dog "pepped up and got friendly."

Police Dog Suspended

McKEES ROCKS, PA-February 3, 2004 — A McKees Rocks police dog that was cleared two years ago is suspended indefinitely – this time for allegedly biting a black teenager during a demonstration at a middle school last week.

Councilwoman Wanda Jones Dixon who complained about the dog in 2002 wants the dog, a German shepherd named Dolpho, retired from the police force or put to sleep.

City solicitor John Bacharach says he's seen no evidence that the dog's handler did anything wrong in the latest incident – still, the attorney says questions remain about whether the dog is safe. That's why the dog was suspended yesterday.

The girl's parents say a K-9 officer had to pry the dog's jaws apart to free 14-year-old Angela Kirkland on Thursday. It was the second time in 19 months the dog has been accused of attacking a black child.

In 2002, town officials ordered a two-month investigation to determine if Dolpho, a German shepherd, was singling out blacks while on patrol.

In the previous incident, Dolpho escaped from a police vehicle and bit a 9-year-old boy who was playing nearby. The boy is black.
