A pooch and his owner apparently had too much to drink Friday night and both ended up in the slammer.
The dog, a cocker spaniel, was "wobbly and his eyes were bloodshot red," said Derrick Avery, supervisor of the Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society's animal shelter.
It was a first for the folks at the animal shelter. Avery said the shelter hasn't ever been asked to pick up a drunken dog.
It all began about 6:32 p.m. Friday when the Newbern Police Department received a call from a downtown restaurant about a woman with a small dog. The woman appeared to be intoxicated and was cursing, Capt. Jim Richards said, reading from the police report.
The woman left the restaurant and was spotted at the corner of Main and Washington streets, where she and her dog were apprehended, Richards said.
The woman - Glenda Jane Davis, 43, of the 300 block of Parks Street in Newbern - was charged with public intoxication and taken to the Dyer County Jail. Richards said she was released after paying a 0 bond. She pleaded guilty Monday in Newbern Municipal Court and paid a fine and in court costs.
The dog was released to Davis on Saturday, but not before being treated for an apparent hangover. Avery said the dog was "laid out the next day." He said he gave the dog an aspirin and the dog "pepped up and got friendly."
