Scientists are scouring cathedral roofs across Britain in search of space dust dating back billions of years that may unlock secrets of the origins of the solar system and even life itself.

A team of planetary experts has drawn up a list of 13 cathedrals that it believes may be ideal locations to collect micrometeorites.
Already its samples have included grains that are up to seven billion years old that came from other solar systems and entered our own after its birth 4.6 billion years ago.
The cathedrals have been targeted by the team because the large area of their roofs is effective at collecting material over a long period of time and has been left largely undisturbed.
