Sea serpents off the Californian coast. Includes the old chestnut of a 'mysterious' carcass being washed up and later identified as a known animal then 'experts' saying it has explained all the sightings!

I'm sure John Steinbeck mentioned "The Old Man of Monterey" in one of his books. From what I remember, it seemed to be like a larger than average sea otter (although it's been a long time since I read it.)
