14 Times The Simpsons Predicted The Future

The Simpsons is the definition of "pop culture television", and with those kind of minds at work it is completely reasonable that they would be able to "predict" the future. The weird thing is how accurate it is. Perhaps it's not The Simpsons predicting the future, but the future ripping off The Simpsons. This would be where you coin the phrase "The Simpsons Did It". I hope you enjoy these predictions, feel free to share some of your own because I imagine if you watch closely, there are WAY more.

1. The Simpsons predicts grease thieves
In the episode "Lard of the Dance", which aired August 23rd 1998, Homer and Bart enter the grease selling business and look to steal it from Springfield Elementary School. Real life parodied this episode where in 2011, the St.Louis Dispatch would report $2000 worth of used grease being stolen from Bobby Tesslers St.Louis Wings Co. in Rock Hill, Missouri.

2. The Simpsons predicts a horrible tragedy
The episode "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson", from September 21st 1997, which is where Homer must go to The World Trade Center after not paying his parking tickets. The prediction as depicted below is interesting because the price of the magazine coincides with the buildings placement. ...

This is an amusing and interesting article in the New York Times about the many predictions made throughout the run of The Simpsons.

An explanation of these 'eerie' predictions is sanely offered. I guess that, just like really good cold readers, the writers of this show are just smart enough to suss out the situational particulars of the time (in this case, politically, socially and economically):

'The show is the product of brilliant minds, many Harvard educated, said William Irwin, whose book “The Simpsons and Philosophy” has for years been taught in college courses at The University of California, Berkeley and other schools. Mr. Irwin is the chairman of philosophy at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Writers rule on “The Simpsons,” not the actors, he said.

The result is a show packed with references to art, literature, pop culture, politics and science.

“When that many smart people produce a television show, it’s bound to make some startling ‘predictions,’” he said.

Another possible factor at play: “the law of truly large numbers,” a concept presented by the Harvard mathematicians Frederick Mosteller and Persi Diaconisin their 1989 paper Methods for Studying Coincidences.

“With a large enough sample, any outrageous thing is apt to happen,” the law states. “The Simpsons,” a Fox show, is the longest-running scripted TV series in history.'

Cypress Hill announce concert with London Symphony Orchestra – 27 years after ‘Simpsons’ joke

Cypress Hill have announced a show at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra, almost 30 years after it was joked about on The Simpsons.
In yet another uncanny foretelling of the future by the hit cartoon show, the 1996 episode Homerpalooza saw the group accidentally book a gig with the London Symphony Orchestra while high. Following the episode, rumours of them linking up with the orchestra have circulated ever since. “We are thrilled to be performing with the London Symphony Orchestra in such a prestigious venue as the Royal Albert Hall,” Cypress Hill said. "It’s a dream come true, a collaboration only The Simpsons could have predicted.”

Meanwhile, Kathryn McDowell DBE, the LSO’s Managing Director said: “After years of social media teasing it, many fans may have started to believe it would only be a pipedream – but the LSO is delighted to finally be joining Cypress Hill on stage and in person, and look forward to creating an unforgettable musical moment! Many thanks to the creators of The Simpsons for the idea and to AEG Artisitc and PolyArts for making it all happen.”
