Strange Deaths

I wonder if this thread could apply to dogs.

In the U.S. dogs are getting very sick and sometimes dying from a mysterious respiratory disease.

After an exhausting search, veterinary doctors think they have discovered a new bacterium.

Dogs show loss of appetite, pneumonia, and gums turning blue or purple.

This new bacterium is described as “ freaky small in size” and extremely contagious.

Advise if possible, keep your dog away from other dogs.

An odd case, terrorism has been ruled out. The couple were Kiss fans though.

Police have identified the victims of a deadly car blast at a border crossing between the US and Canada.

Kurt Villani and his wife Monica Villani, both 53, died when their car became airborne and crashed on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls. They lived 10 miles (16km) south of the crash site in Grand Island, New York. A US border agent was also injured in the incident on Wednesday, which prompted a large emergency response and the closure of four border crossings.

The security scare came on the eve of American Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel days of the year. New York Governor Kathy Hochul later ruled out terrorism.

The couple's family owns a chain of hardware and lumber stores in New York State. In a statement released to CBC, the family said they were grateful for the "prayers, condolences and well wishes" they had received.

It is still unclear what caused the couple's vehicle to rapidly accelerate before it flew through the air and burst into flames. The mayor of Niagara Falls in New York, Robert Restaino, told the New York Times on Thursday that the couple had been driving an older Bentley vehicle and were on their way to a concert in Canada, thought to be a Kiss show that was later cancelled due to illness in the band. He added that police are investigating several possibilities behind the crash, including whether the car suffered a mechanical failure that caused it to accelerate.

The incident happened at around 11:30 local time (16:30 GMT) on Wednesday. Gov Hochul said the car travelled at a "very high rate of speed", hurtling over an 8ft (2.4m) fence on the New York side of the border near a checkpoint. The vehicle was "incinerated", she said, with nothing left but the engine. A registration plate was not even recovered.

Woman killed on motorway, victim presumably looking for mobile phone

A woman has died after being hit by several cars on the A1 motorway between Hengelo and Apeldoorn last night. Presumably the woman was looking for a lost phone on the motorway, police told Omroep Gelderland based on interviews with witnesses.

The woman was reportedly in a car with several people. One of them had dropped the phone from the vehicle, according to conversations with witnesses. The driver put the car alongside the road and the woman got out to look for the mobile.

She was walking on the A1 near Bathmen. A number of cars could no longer avoid her, police told the regional broadcaster. The victim succumbed to her injuries.

Motorway closed for hours
Due to the accident, the motorway near Lochem was closed almost all night. Victim assistance has been called for people who saw the collisions happen. The occupants of the cars directly involved in the accident have been taken care of at the police station.

The driver of the car the woman was in has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and involvement in the accident.

A major investigation has been launched into the cause of the fatal accident. The motorway was therefore closed for hours in both directions, near the Lochem exit. According to Omroep Gelderland, dozens of motorists got stuck, witnessing the situation on the road.

I can't imagine their terror when the car was travelling so fast and then goes airborne. It is a very strange incident. We probably will not find the cause.

You know a lot about criminology though, so that no such incidents related to crimes came to your mind is interesting.
Yup, I did wonder if the car was full of explosives or whatever but there seems to be no terrorism involved.
There's also the possibility of a bizarre murder/suicide pact. Nothing has come about that either.

Police are using 3D scanning technology to help create a “digital crash scene”, as the investigation into Wednesday’s Rainbow Bridge vehicle explosion continues.

Niagara Falls Police Department Chief John Faso said investigations were likely to take a while, adding: “This is not something that’s going to happen overnight. It’s a monumental task.”

Investigators are now probing whether a mechanical failure could be to blame, with experts suggesting that the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) – which is similar to an aircraft’s “black box” – may be critical to discovering the cause of the crash.

Robert Restaino, the mayor of Niagara Falls, told The New York Times that the Bentley the couple, identified on Friday as Kurt P Villani and Monica Villani, was driving in was an older model and may have experienced some sort of mechanical glitch that caused it to suddenly accelerate as it approached the border checkpoint.

So was everything but the engine incinerated or not? They can't have it both ways

Depends on what they mean by incinerated I have seen burnt out cars were the alloy engine and gear box cases have melted and you could see the shafts and gears all the paint and rubber gone , engine fallen out but still recognisable as a car.

From the Metro; a man fell into a fire pit that was being used to cook a pig. The sides of the pit collapsed and he was suffocated.
Or also burned although that's not mentioned.

Man dies after being buried alive when he fell into sandpit used to cook pig

A man died after being buried alive in sand while partying with friends and family on a picturesque island.

Josh Taylor, 25, was left fighting for his life after he fell into a hole on a beach on Bribie Island, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

The group had been cooking a pig in a sand pit at the time of the freak accident, according to MailOnline.
This type of accident sometimes occurs when kids or teenagers dig into the sides of sand dunes to make a cave which then collapses on them. Now and then it's when they create an actual hole to play in. Hadn't heard of a pigroasting pit collapsing before.

A bride was killed by a shark when paddelboarding on her honeymoon.

First picture of newlywed killed by shark in front of her husband hours into their honeymoon

A newlywed woman who was mauled to death by a shark while paddleboarding with her husband has been named and pictured.

Lauren Erickson Van Wart, 44, had only tied the knot one day before she was killed by a predator in The Bahamas on Monday.

The textbook editor, from Boston, was in the sea with her partner less than a mile from the five-star Sandals Royal Bahamian resort they were staying at when she was fatally bitten.

I wonder if the cause was a stroke on the part of the driver - I saw part of a TV show where the (US) driver had suffered a severe stroke and was still conscious, his foot still on the gas (or on cruise control) but otherwise incapable. He had driven off a highway, several hundred yards along a level verge and eventually was stopped by a smallish tree. He'd been filmed by someone on their mobile phone whilst another passenger had called emergency services.

Not that I know if there were any remains, but this may be impossible to determine

I guess being killed by an ancient wall counts as a strange death.

Three stonemasons have died after a section of the historic walls around the Old City of Kairouan in Tunisia collapsed on Saturday.

Officials say a 30m section of the wall near the Gate of the Floggers crashed to the ground. Two others were also injured in the accident and are said to have suffered fractures An investigation has been opened into the accident. Authorities say it could be linked to recent heavy rain.

Moez Tria, a spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department said a perimeter had been set up to stop people from walking under part of the wall which is still at risk of further collapse.

The city of Kairouan was founded in 670 AD and is one of North Africa's holiest cities. It was the capital of the Muslim world in North Africa for four centuries, before Tunis was chosen as Tunisia's political capital in the 12th century.

Kairouan became a Unesco World Heritage site in 1988 and is home to the Mosque of the Three Doors, the oldest known mosque with a sculpted facade.

Unesco describes the mosque as "an architectural masterpiece that served as a model for several other Maghreban mosques".

Santa's dead.

"Children watched in disbelief as Grandfather Frost – the Russian Santa – plummeted to his death from the 24th floor of a high-rise residential building.

The stunt took a catastrophic turn as the industrial climber-turned Santa for the night had planned to scale down the tower block in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Once at the bottom, he was due to meet and greet the youngsters who were waiting patiently beside a Christmas tree."

Death due to heart explosion. Well, heart implant.

"The widow of a man has filed a lawsuit alleging a series of failures led to the deaths of her husband and 3-year-old son after a medical heart pump device implanted in her husband exploded, causing a fire in their apartment in Georgia last Christmas."
.....
On the afternoon of Dec. 25, 2022, Tarawally’s HM 3 Device “catastrophically failed when its System Controller, due to a manufacturing defect in one of the
battery pack’s three battery cells internally shorted, overheated, and experienced a thermal runaway,” court documents said."

That is just awful. :(

The crazy thing is that medical implants may have serial numbers, but tracking any defects or implant failure of any kind is not done.

Car manufacturers have to track problems with vehicles, but medical device manufacturers do not.

Death by giant polar bear anyone? I can imagine this killing someone if the wind gets it,
it's much more impressive in real life when you come on it unexpected.
