I haven't found anything on here about this, but this is a most intriguing item... 8)

Found in Francis Hitching's "The World Atlas of Mysteries" (hooray!), available at a charity shop near you:

Basically it seems that if you draw lines radiating out from Alaise in France, they end up lining up with countless other places across Europe with similar names: Calais, several Alais, several Versailles, Lally, Alise, Callet, etc. etc. even as far as Alessio in Italy, Aligse in Germany and others.

Seems to be clutching at straws a bit isn't it? I mean, various places that sound vaguely similar - Alaise, Allerey, Salins, Calais, Elise, Luze, Luxiol, Luxeuil, etc. - doesn't necessarily point at anything...

I remember reading about that: it was very interesting but I can't remember much one it. I think the radial lines are in the manner of the ones on old maps (before latitude and longtitude)

Yes, I've read (most of) The Old Straight Track. This isn't the same as the leys in Britain... I would say it was more interesting: why do the lines all emanate from Alaise? for example.

i love etymology and stuff, but i have a hard time seeing a link between calais and versailles...
(btw the place in italy is alassio, not alessio, which is a male name)

Pretty sure you coudl find the same thing going in all directions from a place if you looked hard enough. Still, it is interesting isnt it :)
