Ancient Egyptians in Oz

We have a couple of Australians and New Zealander lecturers and researchers at the uni and have heard about human colonization of Oz from them. Apparently some rock scratches on a site (can't remember where) may be knife sharpening and are dated to 100, 000yr ago, how i can't remember. This has resulted in claims of humans evolving in Oz! (mention the Yowie here if you must). Theres also some mass burnings at some time before that that some claim as ground clearance but Oz has lots of natural fires anyway, no need for aboriginal slash and burn hunting to explain that.

Ah, yes! Ultima Thule! Thanks, but I was hoping for a report of artifacts rather than hearsay evidence. Still, Pytheas' report is very suggestive of a European visit to Iceland during classical times.

On the issue of early human settlement in Oz, I assume the site you are referring to, Wowbagger, is Jiminum (sp?) in the far NW. If so, the very early dating, obtained from thermoluminescence dating of detritus covering the lowest part of the rockface, has been disputed and the markings are now generally thought to be much more recent. In fact, the earliest dating of evidence for human occupation in Oz, which is generally accepted anyway, is for a male burial at Lake Mungo in western New South Wales of about 40,000 bp.

As for the yowies, maybe we should search for them in the murky recesses of the human mind, (with Jung as our guide) rather than in the shadowy gullies of east coast mountain forests.

I can remember reading a book called 'the Ibis Seal' ages ago (can't remember the author's name) which postulated an early colonisation of part of Australia by ancient Egyptians.

In the preface he listed a few anomalous artifacts found in Australia. I still have the book somewhere and will dig it out ('scuse the pun!) if I can.

Carole, there are some carved rock faces in New South Wales which have on them what appear to be inscriptions in Egyptian heiroglyphics. Although you will find some (non-expert) authors claiming that these are proof positive of an ancient Egyptian presence in Oz, recognised Egyptologists state that the carvings have all the hallmarks of a student prank.

I found the following link about the NSW hieroglyphs, Sebastian:

http://www.pip.com.au/~paceman/ANCIENT%20EGYPTIANS%20IN%20AUSTRALIA%201.html

And this one is from the same source:

http://www.pip.com.au/~paceman/ANCIENT%20EGYPTIANS%20IN%20AUSTRALIA%202.html

Of course, I couldn't find 'The Ibis Seal' anywhere . . .

The above articles seem biased in favour of ancient Egptian visitors to Egypt. I suppose it's technically possible, they could have launched their boats somewhere off the Red Sea and sailed into the Indian Ocean, but they would surely have hit India first, or the Indonesian islands . . .

Bump! I have split this thread off from the Romans in Ireland one, as it seems interesting enough on its own. It seemed silly to discuss different sites at the opposite ends of the earth on one thread!

Here is another link worth following up if you're interested in this topic:

http://members.ozemail.com.au/~classblu/egypt/egypt.htm

It includes a link to an exchange of emails betwen the site owner and a Dr Gilbert who doesn't accept the validity of the heiroglyphics and lays out some of the reasons why:

http://members.ozemail.com.au/~classblu/egypt/Gilbert.htm

The site also includes links to Rex Gilroy's site:

http://www.internetezy.com.au/~mj129/index.html

Rex is a bit of a ubiquitous presence in Oz crypto matters. At his site you will find discussion of all sorts of crypto topics from UFOs to ancient (non-aboriginal) cultures in Oz to "finds" of all sorts of hominids in Oz to yowies and a range of other esoterica.

Another link gives a pretty undiscriminating list of anomalous "finds" in Oz:

http://www.awarenessquest.com/research.htm

All good fun really. :p
