Prehistoric Horror in the Pond 2.0

Some time ago we had a story of “prehistoric fish in Russian pond“(link: http://www.englishrussia.com/?p=1633 ). Many opinions have been expressed on this, many thought these were triops, and the size of them was much smaller than it was in the article text. But see this now: another time such creatures caught now in different Russian city and now on the video. These things are huge and they look unfriendly, just imagine somebody go swimming to their pond. And people say it’s 3 feet long!"

Any ideas?

Picture for them the pervious story:

though this looks very similar to the creature in the video.[/quote]

Looks like a horseshoe crab to me. Definitely not a fish, anyway.

Actually, the article mentions, 'triops,' or 'Notostraca,' which is a species of long tailed shrimp.

If it is a sort of long tailed shrimp, then it's a big one and possibly a new species.

Horseshoe crabs don't have a large fleshy, mobile tail like the creature in the clip. They have a stiff, thin tail.

Horseshoe crabs are also exclusively marine creatures, so wouldn't be found in ponds, the correct habitat for tadpole shrimps.

It's definitely a triops. The mystery is around its size though.

Done a little more searching and at least one species of triops - Triops cancriformis does grow to 11cm in the wild:

http://www.arkive.org/species/ARK/i...freshwater/Triops_cancriformis/more_info.html

This is clearly not the same species as the one in the clip though, as these have a much shorter tail to head shield ratio, but it does show that triops can grow to a substantial size.

The African species Triops numidicus grows to a similar size to the one in the clip:

Could these have been introduced into Ukrainian ponds? I don't know. The proportion of tail length to head shield size still looks different to me.

Ah yes, I didn't read the text properly, and it does appear to be a triops. Interestingly you can buy these in dried eggs like Sea Monkeys - though I'm guessing those don't grow to three feet!

true, looks like the african ones, but would be great to know how big the one in the video is.

Facehugger. No doubt about it. Don't let it get that thing down your throat!

Reminds me of a girl I met in a Peckham nightclub once

Child catches bizarre-looking fish in Tempe lake
July 29, 2008

" PHOENIX -- Jose Chavez proudly holds his trophy catch. "I see fish like this on the Discovery Channel," he said.

But certainly not at Kiwanis Lake in Tempe.

Jose and his father fish there frequently. The night they caught what appears to be an alligator gar they had tried out a new kind of bait -- real chicken liver.

Little did they know what the new bait would attract.

"His pole was bending," Jose said. "His snout barely came out and I said, 'Oh shoot!'"

They knew right away it wasn't the usual catfish catch.

"Cuz I was about to put my hand in there and go get it and he said, 'No! Look at the teeth on that!'"

The gar kept snapping at them with razor sharp teeth so Jose decided to leave the hook in the gar's mouth.

"Weird looking. Looked like a snake. My dad thought it was a snake. He said, 'Damn, looks like a snake mixed with an alligator.'"

This fish if you can call it a fish looks like more than one marine type mammel or amphibian mixed together,
the head looks like that of a crab, the underneath looks like its all rib bones and feathers, the top part of the tale looks like that of a lizard of some sort and the bottom half of the tale looks like that of a sting ray.

To be honest i think its a specimen thats been mixed with dna of other animals i mean its not he first time something like this has happened, and the fact it can walk and swim and by the sounds of it this thing has a good set of teeth on it,

Naw, that's all invertebrate parts -- legs and gils, specifically, if I'm not mistaken.
