I've just simultaneously read 'The Cold Six Thousand' by James Elroy and 'Marianne Dreams' by Catherine Storr. The only reason I draw your valuable attention to this fact is that (a) they form as fine (if rather unlikely) Fortean double bill as you can imagine and (b) my head now feels dangerously explosive.

Conspiracies and dream monsters in the same day. Man can't live at such speeds.
