Anyone interested in non-native animal and plant species in the UK might like to check out:

http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countryside/resprog/findings/non-native/index.htm

it's the Review of Non-native Species Policy: Working Group report. It summarises current legislation and policy for dealing with non-native species, and makes some recommendations for future legislation and policy.

I've not had time to read it all, but a few things struck me as interesting so far- one is that muntjacs are occasionally re-released on licence, presumably after accidental trapping, or after medical treatment- another is that raccoons may have been released into the wild following their listing on the Dangerous Wild Animals act.

One of their suggestions is that grey squirrels should be allowed to be re-released when taken from areas where they are unlikely to do any further damage- at the moment, if the RSPCA (for instance) treat injured grey squirrels, they cannot legally release them again.
