Classical religion never seems to have recieved much comment, nor do my new age friends show an interest in it.

has anyone any idea why?

Shagging swans, pervy bulls, its not what us nice forteans tend to dwell on...

We have old but interesting threads on this very subject. :D

The gist seemed to be that the ancient gods are still around, but as no-one believes in them any more they can walk around unnoticed, like long-forgotten former pop stars.

There are people living who claim to have met Pan, for instance.

edit - Hereare several, compactly merged for your convenience. :D

I'm guessing that our modern brownies and house elves are the ancient household gods ("lares et penates") with more up-to-date names!

There's a novel like that - American Gods by Neil Gaimon. Surprisingly good, even with the ubiquitous random sex scenes (which are, I'll admit, at important feature of many deities worship)

Ditto. Also see Terry Pratchetts 'Small Gods'.
