Brace yourself. James Cameron, the man who brought you 'The Titanic' is back with another blockbuster. This time, the ship he's sinking is Christianity.

In a new documentary, Producer Cameron and his director, Simcha Jacobovici, make the starting claim that Jesus wasn't resurrected --the cornerstone of Christian faith-- and that his burial cave was discovered near Jerusalem. And, get this, Jesus sired a son with Mary Magdelene.

No, it's not a re-make of "The Da Vinci Codes'. It's supposed to be true.

Let's go back 27 years, when Israeli construction workers were gouging out the foundations for a new building in the industrial park in the Talpiyot, a Jerusalem suburb. of Jerusalem. The earth gave way, revealing a 2,000 year old cave with 10 stone caskets. Archologists were summoned, and the stone caskets carted away for examination. It took 20 years for experts to decipher the names on the ten tombs. They were: Jesua, son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Mathew, Jofa and Judah, son of Jesua.
Israel's prominent archeologist Professor Amos Kloner didn't associate the crypt with the New Testament Jesus. His father, after all, was a humble carpenter who couldn't afford a luxury crypt for his family. And all were common Jewish names.

There was also this little inconvenience that a few miles away, in the old city of Jerusalem, Christians for centuries had been worshipping the empty tomb of Christ at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Christ's resurrection, after all, is the main foundation of the faith, proof that a boy born to a carpenter's wife in a manger is the Son of God.

But film-makers Cameron and Jacobovici claim to have amassed evidence through DNA tests, archeological evidence and Biblical studies, that the 10 coffins belong to Jesus and his family.

Ever the showman, (Why does this remind me of the impresario in another movie,"King Kong", whose hubris blinds him to the dangers of an angry and very large ape?) Cameron is holding a New York press conference on Monday at which he will reveal three coffins, supposedly those of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene. News about the film, which will be shown soon on Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canada's Vision, and Israel's Channel 8, has been a hot blog topic in the Middle East (check out a personal favorite: Israelity Bites) Here in the Holy Land, Biblical Archeology is a dangerous profession. This 90-minute documentary is bound to outrage Christians and stir up a titanic debate between believers and skeptics. Stay tuned.

 I'd like to hear how he justifies the DNA 'evidence'.

Probably by comparing it to that of European royalty and Harry.

Is anyone else getting extremely bored with: 'THE BIBLE MAY NOT BE TRUE!!! OMG, OMG!!!!! WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT??'. Stories that seem to have plagued the media for the past five years?

It doesn't annoy me that they challenge the Bible, it annoys me that they make it out to be some sort of new important theory. Perhaps one that could destroy the Catholic church... sorry guys, I doubt anything will ever destroy Catholicism, let alone Christianity as a whole. It's just too damn big!

I won't say much about this as I don't want to offend anyone but I agree we are witnessing a coordinated attack on Christianity, I don't have a clue why though the religion doesn't seem to be causing any trouble compared to the other main religions, maybe they are just too meek and the bullies can't resist an easy target. I'm an atheist but not an evangelical atheist, you believe whatever you want as long as you don't try to force your beliefs or morals on to me.

Yes, it would appear that a major, earthshaking announcment of historic proportions is about to take place next Monday, (2/26/7) when a news conference will be held to announce the discovery of the Tomb of Jesus Christ of Nazareth as well as that of his family members. The news conference is part of a publicity effort in advance of a TV program that will focus on the archaeological discovery of this tomb and the containers that held the bodies of the family members. It is not clear if any remains have been found or not.

The Attack On Christianity Begins

The 3-time Oscar-winning (Titanic Movie) film-maker, James Cameron and associates will hold a news conference on Monday (2/26/7) in New York City, to announce to the world the discovery of the family tomb of Jesus Christ. The press release announcing the news conference indicates that a new documentary film by Cameron will feature not only the tomb but the contents of that tomb which housed the bodies of 10 Jews circa the 1st Century A.D. The tomb is located in a section of Jerusalem underneath an apartment biulding.

Included in the discovery are the bone-boxes, known as ossuaries of Jesus of Nazareth and his family. The release hints at the notion that there are remains of Jesus' body in that bone box. The box in question contains the inscription: "Jesus, son of Joseph."

In addition to that news comes revelation that the tomb also contains the bone boxes of his father - Joseph, his mother, Mary and either his "wife" Mary Magdalene or a sister named Mary along with a box containing the inscription: Judah: "son of Jesus." There were other boxes with names of Jesus' brothers. There are indications that the now famous bone box of his brother James was also found in this tomb. That relic was revealed to the public a few years ago and its authenticity remains in dispute. All told the researchers found 10 bone boxes in the tomb of which 6 remain

Above: The alleged ossuary or "bone box" of Jesus' brother James. This box was first brought to public attention just a few years ago. Ossuaries or "bone boxes" are not the size of modern day coffins but much smaller. They are big enough to accomodate the length of the large leg bone of a person. The boxes are made of limestone, which is a material so common to the area.

According to the preliminary information, the film documentary will reveal DNA testing that confirms a family relationship between the various remains, although how such tests could determine a spouse remains a mystery to this reporter. In researching for this A-O news article, there exists also a press release for the soon-to-be-released book by the film maker Cameron and the film's archaeologist Charles Pellegrino. The book press release description of the book claims that this discovery statistically has only a one in 10 million chance of being some other Jewish family than that of Jesus Christ. In other words, the book claims that this discovery is nearly absolute proof that Jesus not only existed, but that He never resurrected and ascended into heaven. It also then would reveal that Jesus married and had children, something never indicated in the Biblical texts.

Above: Looking inside the ossuary or bone box. Usually an inscription was carved on the outside of the box to identify the remains of the person inside. The use of such bone boxes in the Jerusalem area are thought to have been limited to about a 70 to 100 year time span ending with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 a.d.

Various articles on this subect have been using the term "coffins" as having been found in the burial cave. Yet in other articles the terms "bone box" or "ossuaries" are used. The term "coffins" is probably misleading to 21st century thinking. In the first century A.D.Jewish burial customs simply laid out the body, wrapped in burial linens and encased in ointments. Once the body had decomposed to that of bones, the bones would be placed in a small, usually limestone box, which archaeologists term, an "ossuary" but euphmestically are sometimes referred to by non-scholars as a "bone-box."

It is not clear from the pre-news conference publicity articles as to whether or not the items in question are ossuaries (bone-boxes) or in all actuality, coffins as we, humans think of the term "coffin."

This aspect is but one of many questions left unanswered as the world awaits the film maker's news conference which is set for Monday (2/26/7) in New York City. Part of the news conference will include the display of two of the bone boxes. It is thought that the two boxes will allegedly be that of Jesus and of his mother Mary.

*** Here are some of the questions believers should want answers to:

+ Where is the exact location of the cave-tomb?
+ What exactly was found inside the ossuaries?
+ How can DNA testing confirm marital spouses?
+ How can we know the inscriptions are genuine and not forgeries?
+ Who found the tomb initially and how was it discovered?
+ Is there evidence of human presence in tomb between 30 ad & 1980?

It should be noted that according to Israeli newspaper accounts, the Israeli Antiquities Authority has been the custodian of the "coffins" or "ossuaries" since the discovery was made in 1980. The boxes are being stored in the town of Beit Shemesh, near Jerusalem. As noted earlier, two of the boxes have been reportedly flown to New York City for the news conference on Monday, February 26th, 2007.

Outside Background on the Archaeology of this Story

Last year a Dr. James Tabor (archaeologist and chairman of Religious Studes at the University of North Carolina) authored a book called "The Jesus Dynasty." It has flown under the radar and this reporter only discovered its existence today in researching for this article. There is an "extensive" excerpt from this book that has been published on the ABC-TV news website. Link here. It should be noted that this is a long article of mulitples of pages.

Biblical Archaeology Review has followed the Apostle James (brother of Jesus) bone-box story and the heated debates over its authenticity. It now appears that it came from the same tomb as that of the alleged Jesus' Tomb. The debate over the James "ossuary" then is relevant to the argument of the other bone boxes found in the Jesus Tomb. Why?

Some of the same alleged "scholarly" critics against the James ossuary have really made themselves look like idiots yet the media touts them as authoritative because of their credentials and for the most part avoids citing scholarly proponents whose opinons support the biblical texts. Biblical Archaeology Review has posted on their website an update to the ongoing debate over the James ossurary (bone-box) issue. Here's a link to it. Caution it is long and sometimes gets a bit technical but a fascinating look at the arguments pro and con regarding the inscription itself. Link here.

Apparently the documentary film will .be shown on various TV broadcasts soon On March 4th, American cable televsion's "The Discovery Channel" will air the broadcast. It will also air on the "international" Discovery channel. In Britain, the program will be shown on Channel 4, while in Canada it will air on "Vision" and in Israel on Channel 8 which took part in the production of the show. It is as yet unclear whether or not the film will be broadcast simultaenously or on different dates. The news conference will likely clarify that point on Monday.

The book describing the discovery of the tomb, the investigation thereafter and the making of the film is set for release in America to the public on Tuesday, February 27th. The book will not debut in Britain apparently until April 7th. The book is being published in America by Harper-Collins.

It would appear that this story is a set up by the New World Order crowd of Freemasons and the Illuminists. Apparently they're game-plan is to spin-doctor this thing so that the Antichrist can come to power. This reporter had suspected something like this would develop after all the hype and build up from the Da Vinci Code book and movie and the announced discovery of the Gnostic "Gospel of Judas" and the hype over the Gnostic Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

James Cameron is the key man behind the film documentary. Cameron is a 3-time Oscar winning film-make who is known primarily for his blockbuster movie "Titanic" is also reported to be a 33rd degree freemason. If so, he is also, most likely connected with the Illuminati movement, either directly or indirectly.

This impending announcement and revelation about the "coffin" or ossuary of Jesus of Nazareth is probably the last step in the Illuminati's set up process, so necessary before the revealing their "messiah" of the future, i.e. The Antichrist.

Most likely, the "illuminated spin doctors" will try to eventually claim a DNA link between Jesus of Nazareth and a new "messiah" when that "man of sin" (i.e. "man of chaos") is revealed to the public. Most likely the Illuminists will claim the new 'messiah' is a "descendant" of Jesus. IF so, expect these apologists to point to.the Gnostic Gospels and the Knights Templar legends, ala the book "The DaVinci Code," as proof to support their claims. It will be one of the big building blocks that comprise the "Big Lie" of Satan. How many people who claim to be Christians will fall for this fabrication? Is it possible that most of the "Christian" world will fall for this deception? Don't be surprised if that is the case.

Other Theological Repercusions

The claim that Jesus of Nazareth died and never resurrected essentially destroys Biblically-based conservative Christianity and strengthens the "liberal" Christian or "new-age" Christian theology as well as deism and Freemasonry. It also strengthens traditional Judaism and takes the Jews off-the-hook so to speak for killing the 'Son of God" because without a Resurrection, there is no divinity for Jesus. If there was no divinity for Jesus and that he was merely another man with Adam's DNA, not the Creator's, then there is no substitutionary atonement for sin and if no substitutionary atonement for sin, then there is no salvation. This opens up the world for a new, unified one-world religion. A new "Tower of Babel" religion.

If all of the above were the case, then every other theological element in the Bible is called into serious question including the question of who Jehovah is? From this standpoint, the NWO-Illuminists can conclude that Jehovah was but one of the many "elohim" which the Sumerian Royal Library records refer to as "The Anunnaki" - the gods and goddesses from another planet who were space travelers who came to Earth. It opens up the Illuminist argument for the return of the Anunnaki, the "space brothers" who were the gods of Babylon/Sumer. In the Genesis 6 account they were called the "benai hahelohim" or "sons of God." Their hybrid offspring with human women were called = "The Nephilim."

The Illuminist explanation would then unfold as follows. These entities who came down to Earth, established a colony, and created mankind using laboratory genetics. According to Sumerian Royal Records discovered by archaeologists the Anunnaki crossed over some of their DNA with that of monkeys or primates existing on Earth at the time, to create the human race for the purpose of making them slaves to mine for gold. According to the Sumerians (forerunners of the Babylonians) these 'gods' kept humanity enslaved for tens or hundreds of thousands of years as gold mining on Earth progressed. The gold was used to create an environmental shield for the Anunnaki planet, which the Sumerians called Nibiru.

Can you see where this sort of hypothesis leads? It essentially destroys the Bible and sets the stage for an non-human entities (fallen angels) to decieve mankind into accepting the Big Lie to which Biblical Prophecy references as the great "Apostasy." Truly such a scenario would result in a great "apostasy."

IF, indeed this is the case, then we as Believers in Jesus Christ, stand on the threshold of Biblical prophetic fulfillment. Standby for mind-bending events to unfold shortly. Look for dramatic events to unfold with signs in the heavens, in the weather and in the earth.

This developing story is likely the most significant prophetically oriented event since the American conquest of Iraq and as equally important as the re-birth of Israel in 1948.

Look for major coverage on this story by the Mainstream News Media. The MSM will most likely be all over this story. If not, it will be because they fear a backlash from the True Church. If so, the story will be soft-pedaled until the Christians are gone in the Rapture. IF, the NWO crowd believes there will be no rapture, more than likely, the Mainstream Media will be ordered to shove this story down the public's throat. So watch how the mainstream media covers this story, not just the news conference but also the debut of the film on TV. So the next two weeks for media exposure will likely be a tip-off as to what the Illuminists are expecting in the way of a Rapture event

The first symptom of ill-focus is illustrated by the slant of both cited articles above. In both cases, an imminent presentation on burial artifacts and inferred familial relations is being cast as an 'attack on Christianity'.

*This* is the sort of spin-doctoring we should be watching out for at this point, IMHO .... 8)

In followup to EnolaGaias post is it any wonder that the Catholic Church is so much on the defensive at the moment when nearly every historical discovery and attached theory - with a religious link - are spun into apparent attacks on christianity.

I wouldn't go as far to say that the attacks are co-ordinated or part of a plan but just that they are in vogue at the moment.

Jesus’ burial site found - film claims

New film documents discovery of Jerusalem cave containing ten caskets believed to hold remains of Jesus, Mary, Mary Magdalene and others

The cave in which Jesus Christ was buried has been found in Jerusalem, claim the makers of a new documentary film.

If it proves true, the discovery, which will be revealed at a press conference in New York Monday, could shake up the Christian world as one of the most significant archeological finds in history.

The coffins which, according to the filmmakers held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene will be displayed for the first timeon Monday in New York.

Jointly produced by Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and Oscar winning director James Cameron, the film tells the exciting and tortuous story of the archeological discovery.

The story starts in 1980 in Jerusalem’s Talpiyot neighborhood, with the discovery of a 2,000 year old cave containing ten coffins. Six of the ten coffins were carved with inscriptions reading the names: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus’ brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus’ son - the filmmakers claim).

Decades of research

The findings in the cave, including the decipherment of the inscriptions, were first revealed about ten years ago by internationally renowned Israeli archeologist Professor Amos Kloner.

Since their discovery, the caskets were kept in the Israeli Antiquities Authority archive in Beit Shemesh, but now two have been sent to New York for their first public exhibition.

Although the cave was discovered nearly 30 years ago and the casket inscriptions decoded ten years ago, the filmmakers are the first to establish that the cave was in fact the burial site of Jesus and his family.

The film, which documents the stages of the discovery, is the result of three years labor and research. It will be broadcast on the international Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canada’s Vision and Israel’s Channel 8, which also took part in the film's production.

According to the filmmakers, the film’s claim is based on close work with world-famous scientists, archeologists, statisticians, DNA specialists and antiquities experts.

But I read it as very tongue in cheek.
In other words, "I'm a journalist, I write stories for money, believe it if you like, it's not a PhD dissertation..."

The earlier FT thread on Jesus' brother's bones is here:

I've known for a while that Jesus (Yeshua) was a common name in Jesus Christs time but it was only on one of my lectures on St Marks Gospel that I learned that there are two Jesus's mentioned in the Bible.

Jesus of Nazareth - (main protagonist, beardy-bloke and general nice guy) and Jesus Bar-Abbas - (a criminal who was part of the Zealot rebellion. Better known as simply Barabbas.)

His surname is Aramaic for "son of the father". I've always had this notion that he may simply be a literary device rather than an actual person (or 'character' for sake of argument) and that he and Jesus (beardy bloke) are actually one and the same.

This isn't the first time that the tomb of "Jesus, son of Joseph" has been located. There was such a discovery in 1931, the details of which were reported in American newspapers that year.

In any case, the author of the news release which opens this thread seems staggeringly ignorant of Christian belief. I can't think of anything more heretical than "WORSHIPPING the Empty Tomb." I'd never even come upon the concept until reading this piece.

As the late Rev. J. Vernon Magee said about the Tomb, "He ain't been there for 2,000 years!"

On March 28, 1980, a construction crew developing an apartment complex in Talpiot, Jerusalem, uncovered a tomb, which archaeologists from the Israeli Antiquities Authority excavated shortly thereafter. Archaeologist Shimon Gibson surveyed the site and drew a layout plan. Scholar L.Y. Rahmani later published "A Catalogue of Jewish Ossuaries" that described 10 ossuaries, or limestone bone boxes, found in the tomb.

Scholars know that from 30 B.C. to 70 A.D., many people in Jerusalem would first wrap bodies in shrouds after death. The bodies were then placed in carved rock tombs, where they decomposed for a year before the bones were placed in an ossuary.

Five of the 10 discovered boxes in the Talpiot tomb were inscribed with names believed to be associated with key figures in the New Testament: Jesus, Mary, Matthew, Joseph and Mary Magdalene. A sixth inscription, written in Aramaic, translates to "Judah Son of Jesus."

"Such tombs are very typical for that region," Aaron Brody, associate professor of Bible and archaeology at the Pacific School of Religion and director of California's Bade Museum told Discovery News.

Ossuary Inscriptions

At least four leading epigraphers have corroborated the ossuary inscriptions for the documentary, according to the Discovery Channel.

Frank Moore Cross, a professor emeritus in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, told Discovery News, "The inscriptions are from the Herodian Period (which occurred from around 1 B.C. to 1 A.D.). The use of limestone ossuaries and the varied script styles are characteristic of that time."

Jodi Magness, associate department chair of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told Discovery News that, based on the New Testament writings, "Jesus likely lived during the first century A.D."

In addition to the "Judah son of Jesus" inscription, which is written in Aramaic on one of the ossuaries, another limestone burial box is labeled in Aramaic with "Jesus Son of Joseph." Another bears the Hebrew inscription "Maria," a Latin version of "Miriam," or, in English, "Mary." Yet another ossuary inscription, written in Hebrew, reads "Matia," the original Hebrew word for "Matthew." Only one of the inscriptions is written in Greek. It reads, "Mariamene e Mara," which can be translated as, "Mary known as the master."

Francois Bovon, professor of the history of religion at Harvard University, told Discovery News, "Mariamene, or Mariamne, probably was the actual name given to Mary Magdalene."

Bovon explained that he and a colleague discovered a fourteenth century copy in Greek of a fourth century text that contains the most complete version of the "Acts of Philip" ever found. Although not included in the Bible, the "Acts of Philip" mentions the apostles and Mariamne, sister of the apostle Philip.

"When Philip is weak, she is strong," Bovon said. "She likely was a great teacher who even inspired her own sect of followers, called Mariamnists, who existed from around the 2nd to the 3rd century."

DNA Analysis

Jacobovici, director, producer and writer of "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," and his team obtained two sets of samples from the ossuaries for DNA and chemical analysis. The first set consisted of bits of matter taken from the "Jesus Son of Joseph" and "Mariamene e Mara" ossuaries. The second set consisted of patina — a chemical film encrustation on one of the limestone boxes.

The human remains were analyzed by Carney Matheson, a scientist at the Paleo-DNA Laboratory at Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada. Mitochondrial DNA examination determined the individual in the Jesus ossuary and the person in the ossuary linked to Mary Magdalene were not related.

Since tombs normally contain either blood relations or spouses, Jacobovici and his team suggest it is possible Jesus and Mary Magdalene were a couple. "Judah," whom they indicate may have been their son, could have been the "lad" described in the Gospel of John as sleeping in Jesus' lap at the Last Supper.

Robert Genna, director of the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory in New York, analyzed both the patina taken from the Talpiot Tomb and chemical residue obtained from the "James" ossuary, which was also found around 1980, but subsequently disappeared and resurfaced in the antiquities market. Although controversy surrounds this burial box, Genna found that the two patinas matched.

"The samples were consistent with each other," Genna told Discovery News.

Upon examining the tomb, the filmmakers determined a space exists that would have fit the "James" ossuary. Given the patina match and this observation, Jacobovici theorizes the lost burial box could, in fact, be the "James" ossuary.

I think you're right. But it still means that a newswriter for a major international news organization can't grasp the nuance (Good Lord!) of difference between visiting something and praying to it. One might as well argue that the Pilgrims who settled the east coast of North America came here because they wanted to worship maize or American Indians or Plymouth Rock.

I believe that the correct term should have been 'venerate' or that the sentence should have included the words "at the" perhaps. However, as The Holy Sepulchre is a Church, IMHO, I don't believe that the term 'worship' would have deliberately been used for the purposes of slant or spin. "very large ape" on the other hand...

Video: Fox slams James Cameron for Jesus 'discovery'; compares it to 'The Da Vinci Code'

A storm of controversy has erupted following movie producer James Cameron's announcement that his upcoming Discovery Channel documentary "The Lost Tomb of Jesus" will present evidence that Jesus Christ was buried with his family. RAW STORY compares the coverage of Cameron's claim on both CNN and Fox News.

CNN devoted about one minute twenty seconds to the story, mostly cutting to a clip of James Cameron talking at a press conference about his decision to get involved with the documentary despite its contentious subject matter. CNN's report concluded with the TV anchor saying, "And Cameron stressed the film is not trying to undermine Christianity, but to celebrate the real life existence of Jesus and his family."

Fox News devoted a much longer segment to Cameron's announcement on today's edition of "The Live Desk with Martha MacCallum." Leading off with a statement by Catholic League President Bill Donahue, in which Donahue calls Cameron an "egomaniac" who makes "preposterous claims" that amount to a "titanic fraud," Fox then held a round table discussion in which Martha MacCallum compared the documentary to the novel/movie "The Da Vinci Code" twice.

"Let me just throw this out there for you," MacCallum continues. "If it were something that was attacking another religion, because there's this idea out there that Christianity is sort of, it's fine, you know, you can try to debunk anything out there, but if you tried to do this to the Muslim religion or perhaps the Jewish religion there would be an outcry of huge proportions."

"There would be a fatwa on Mr. Cameron by noon tomorrow," replies one panelist.

"Can you imagine if somebody said I'm going to do a documentary and I'm going to look at the Muslim religion," continues another, "and let's really see who Allah was, maybe he wasn't this deity, maybe he was just, you know, and tried to debunk the whole thing. People would be irate. Hollywood would say, you know what this is another case of pigheaded Americans who are Christian and white."

"That's exactly what this documentary is about. Increasing his religious agenda," replies another on the panel apparently referring to James Cameron. (It is interesting to note that according to Newsmeat.com in the last election cycle Cameron's only donation was the Republican Party of California. In prior elections, he has given mostly to Democrats.)

RAW STORY reported earlier today on a top Israeli archaeologist who disputed the claims put forth by James Cameron's documentary.

And more coverage...

James Cameron unveils 'Jesus' tomb'
James Cameron unveiled what he claims to be Jesus' coffin

Titanic director James Cameron has unveiled what he believes may be Jesus' coffin, calling it possibly the first physical evidence of Christ's life.

The plain limestone box, or "ossuary", was one of 10 discovered in a cave tomb stumbled on by builders in Jerusalem in 1980, and first evacuated by a British archaeologist.

The severely disintegrated bones found in the coffins were reburied according to tradition, but human matter collected by filmmakers has provided DNA profiles, which they say suggest Jesus and Mary Magdalene were a couple.

Even after their discovery, boxes merely gathered dust on storage shelves, because the names on the inscriptions on six of them were so common that they did not excite those who first catalogued them.

Measuring just over a metre in length and around 30cm high, the ossuary linked to Jesus took centre stage alongside one the Discovery Channel team believed once contained Mary Magdalene's remains at a packed press conference at New York's public library.

But the filmmakers say statistical analysis shows the odds are at the 600-1 in favour of the tomb being that of Jesus' family.

They believe five of the inscriptions represent the key New Testament figures not just of Jesus and Mary Magdalene but also Mary, Matthew and Joseph, while a sixth could be a son of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Cameron told the audience: "I have never doubted that there was a historical Jesus, that he walked the Earth, but the simple fact is that there has never been a shred of physical archaeological evidence to support that fact until right now."

The Lost Tomb of Jesus argued that although the names inscribed in Hebrew and Greek were common in the First Century, one thought to represent Mary Magdalene is the clincher that sets them apart as a group. It reads: "Mariamene e Mara", an unusual Greek version of the name which can be translated as "Mary known as the Master".

The film cites recent scholarly research revealing that Mariamene was the particular variation used by Mary Magdalene. Finding that name along with the others was the equivalent of discovering a grave marked Ringo alongside a John, Paul and George, Cameron said.
