If you follow the Centre for Fortean Zoology's blog you'll have heard that our esteemed director, Jonathan Downes is currently in Texas with his wife Corinna investigating the blue hairless dogs there that the media insist on calling 'Chupacabras' despite them being nothing to do with goat suckers.

As well as investigating new sightings and witness of previously unknown populations of blue dogs, Jonathan and Corinna, along with Texan residents Richie and Naomi West have obtained DNA samples from the previously unknown population for analysis.

This should hopefully prove to be a very interesting expedition and solve some of the mysteries surrounding these unique and unusual feral canines.

For more info and to read the latest news of the expedition along with other peculiarities that are going on here's the link to the expedition blog:

Sounds interesting, I've enjoyed his other books!

His timing is excellent. The long hard winter is over (hey, we had two freezes! We were suffering!) and spring is here. March and April are the best months to be in Texas. Wildflowers, bird migration, public parties.

Their DNA samples will prove to be from mangy coyotes. That was the result on the Cuero beast and there's no reason to think the others are different. But the important thing is to have a nice vacation.

Indeed, it was but the new population look somewhat different and chances are they could be something different, but you don't know until you test you see.

As for the mange thing when these dogs are seen by witnesses they're usually described as quite active and acting fairly normally so, whereas the dead one might well have had mange, if the others do or if mange is the cause of hairlessness it would have to be quite a mild strain of it. Weather any or all the dogs in the pack in the new population have mange or a similar skin complaint is one thing Jon will be hoping to find out from the video surveillance the CFZ have set up there. So keep an eye on the expedition blog and see what transpires.
