UFOs spotted over Cumbria

Last updated 15:22, Tuesday, 10 February 2009

UFOs have been spotted visiting Ravenglass.

Unexplained lights were seen off the Copeland shore only weeks after a flurry of UFO activity was reported in Barrow.

A witness said there were two lights together then one veered off to the north. Both lights were said to head down to sea level and back up again before shooting off at speed with no noise.

The report was submitted on January 24 to specialist website North West UFO Research by Southport coastguard officer Paul Harrison, on behalf of a colleague based in Cumbria.

It is still not known what the objects were.

At the start of the year keen-eyed Evening Mail readers contacted the paper after seeing strange objects between December 25 and 27.

The sightings were later revealed to be Chinese lantern balloons released by a couple from Askam during their wedding celebration.

North West UFO research was set up by Welsh author Pat Regan as a contact point for UFO spotters.

I'm getting a bit peed off now with the old chinese lantern explanations. Not that they are not necessarily true, most of the time it is CLs but if the papers know, just tell those that call in not to bother or do not print it. Why not publish an article called:
"If you see orange lights in the blooming sky, its blooming chinese blooming LANTERNS..."
On the other hand, CLs might step into the footsteps of "Venus" as an all round explanation.
"Yes dear, its either Venus or chines lanterns..."

UFO spotted
Published on 12th February 2009 in News

An Unidentified Flying Object has been spotted in the sky above Cowick.

The alien visitor was reported by 75-year-old widow Mary Robinson, who claims to have seen a "golden halo of light" above Shearburn's Planting, a wooded area near the M62 motorway close to West Cowick.

Mrs Robinson had opened her curtains at about 7am on Sunday to have a look at the weather.

Instead she was greeted by a strange glow suspended over the woodland between Tablers Wood and the Highways depot.

"I was just wondering what the weather was like outside and I saw this great big halo of light," said Mrs Robinson. "I stood there looking at it and then it gradually began to move eastwards until it just disappeared behind the houses next door to me.

"It was far bigger than any star or planet that I've ever seen. It was definitely not one of these - it was too low in the sky (to be) a star and the light was far too big for it to be a helicopter or an aircraft.

"It had a golden ridge-plate and was black in the middle. After two or three minutes it began to glide slowly eastwards.

"I watched it until it disappeared behind the neighbours' houses - that's how low it was."

Mrs Robinson, who lives in a dormer bungalow in Butt Lane, Snaith, added: "I've never seen anything like it in my life and I'm 75. There's obviously something out there."

Mrs Robinson's sighting is the latest in a series of UFO spots. Last month a suspected UFO incident made national headlines after claims that a wind-farm turbine had been damaged by a mystery aircraft near Conisholme, Lincolnshire.

And this weekend there was another alleged UFO sighting in Beverley, the second in as many months. On this occasion the witness described seeing a halo of light similar to the one near Snaith

It was obviously a stray chinese lantern... ;)

Looks like it Dingo. I'm getting a crick in my neck every time I go out at night now! Tonight I nearly walked off the decking. It actually frightened my daughter to see them which makes the "unexplained" bit of UFO more credible for me. I know the two are not connected but near us today the local press is reporting that human remains have been found at one of our beaches - likely to have been there for 50 years they say. All a bit spooky.

I don't know where its from, came up in Google images when I looked for "Rats", I copied it and voila.
Might be originally from Facebook, but where I got it from it was not an avatar, so I dunno... 8)

Schoolgirl films ‘UFO sighting’

This is the latest in a series of sightings of UFOs in the skies over Shropshire which was captured on camera by Bridgnorth school girl Harriet Rogers.

Thirteen-year-old Harriet filmed about seven minutes-worth of footage with the help of her dad on February 21.

The pair were amazed to see the light and spent about 20 minutes watching the bizarre lights. It was still there when they stopped recording, Harriet said.

“My grandmother telephoned telling us about a light in the sky; we went upstairs and had a look.

“What my dad and I saw was a light much brighter compared to the stars.

“At first, we thought it was a helicopter but then my dad went outside but could not hear any rotary blades.

“That’s when we started getting suspicious, so I got the camcorder out.

“To the human eye, it just looked like a bright light but, on the cam-recorder we could see it pulsing, then suddenly changing colours. It was low in the sky, the bright light on the first part of the recording is a street light,” said Harriet.

The pair decided to go out and follow the light along the Craven Arms Road to try get a bit closer and they started to notice it was going down beyond the horizon.

She added: “This is when you could see with your own eyes that it was pulsing and changing colours.

“We stopped in a lay-by and rested the camcorder on a gate post where we got the best shots. We could see how it was getting much brighter than before.”

This isn’t the only time that we have seen it, we have seen about two other separate occasions, all roughly in the same direction but not the exact place.

Harriet is not the only one to have spotted strange lights over Shropshire in the last few months.

There have been up to 30 sightings of mysterious spheres of light logged by UFO experts in the last two months with at least eight recorded in the last fortnight.

Sirius, again, of course.

I thought Venus, which was prominent in the February evenings.
Its time of setting seems to coincide fairly closely with the disappearance of the 'object'.

As usual with press reports, we don't get useful information such as directions...

I wish the footage had been captured properly, rather than just pointing the camera at the television which is what has been done here. You can even see the reflection of the person in the TV screen

It's also a shame there doesn't seem to be any other objects filmed to put the shape into perspective. Not even once does the camera zoom out either.

No explanation on those red light sources off to the side. Torches or streetlights perhaps?

It does seem to move around slightly, so surely it couldn't be Venus? I get the impression it was probably filmed on a tripod. Only reason I say that is because there would be a lot more movement it was filmed handheld and zoomed in that close.

Still not sure though.

It's been filmed through a window, by the look of the reflections and it does say in the report that the bright lights are street lamps. I'd say Venus as well, the colour changes and slight movements are possibly artefacts a combination of the camera being zoomed right in, the poor light levels and atmospheric disturbance. The camera's either on a tripod or resting on something, you couldn't hand hold it that steady for than long. Venus has looked very bright some evening in the last few weeks.

This isn’t the only time that we have seen it, we have seen about two other separate occasions, all roughly in the same direction but not the exact place.

That confirms it's something astronomical.

Usually Sirius is the source of naked-eye reports of multicoloured stationary lights. In this case the colours do not seem to have been noticable until filmed by a camera; that probably means that Venus is a very good candidate. Once again poor tripod technique could be responsible for the apparent movements.

the timer goes backwards on the video but at -6:34 something very odd flies past lol
