Mad For God: When Christians Attack

Not sure what any of this has to do with religous people when they are exempt from the fine. Of course they are both in bed with corporations. That is why the majority of them suck and nobody is arguing that they don't. This thread is for when christians inflict violence not for when politicians fuck things up.

Moreover, when Christians inflict violence in the name of Christianity.

Incidentally, it is possible to be a Christian saved by Christ personally and still avoid being a rabid 'fundamentalist' - just thought I'd point that out.

I put 'fundamentalist' in quotes because putting the Old Testament's instructions before the Gospel where the two contradict is of course missing the whole point. We are supposed to be believers in the New Covenant. We state that in the creed. (At least, in the CofE we do, can't speak for the other sects).

The Jewish religion is for those who hold to the Old Covenant. Something for those anti-Semitics among the fundies to dwell on.

The attack here is on the Body Politic. It might not be physical violence, but it threatens to do huge damage not only to the US economy and its democracy, but also to the World economy. A mega-recession beckons.

The End Times Christianity espoused even by some politicians, like Michelle Bachmann, does look pretty crazy.

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/10/end-times-bachmann.html

It may be Christianity, but not as a lot of people outside the US, Christians and non-Christians alike, would recognise it.

I was brought up Christian, in a time when Christianity and socialism could lie down together quite happily. One of the best espousers of the sort of good hearted, generous, merciful, brand of Christianity that I grew up in, was the theologian, William Barclay. He rejected or rationalised a lot of the supernatural, miraculous or magical, content of the New Testament, to get to the heart of what he believed to be Jesus's message. In the US, these days, they seem to be doing it the other way round. Rejecting the heart of Jesus's message to get to the supernatural and magical.

I suspect a lot of Christians _inside_ the US wouldn't recognise it either.

The Republicans may or may not be acting out of fundamentalist beliefs - what the article quotes are some extremists who say the republicans are right to do what they are doing because it chimes with _their_ beliefs . That is not the same thing.

It is hardly unique for any political party to simply convince them selves that their opponents are deluded. The collapse of abstract political debate in this country is caused by the exact same thing.

The point that seems to be overlooked in the UK is that the Republicans are entirely within their constitutional rights to be doing what they are doing. The situation is equivalent to a minority government in the UK - the head of the executive cannot just impose policies by fiat, he has to obtain both approval and budget from both houses.

I doubt that hysteria from either side helps the situation.

A mega-recession is on its way anyway. All the Western countries are hopelessly over-borrowed and the oil is running out.

There is enough time left for sensible governments to recover the situation (buy time with fracking and coal, get some darn nuclear power stations built, supplement with practical small scale renewables), but democracy no longer seems to lead to sensible government. Talk to some engineers instead and you will discover how close we are to the brink.

A shouting stenographer was removed from the House floor as lawmakers voted on a deal to reopen the government and avoid a debt crisis.

The stenographer began shouting as the the House approved the number of votes needed to pass the bill. According to reporters, she was yelling about God and Freemasons:

Poor woman. What a place to have a break down. Just what are they teaching Christians in the USA nowadays?

No idea.

I sincerely doubt it is all Christians though. Mind you, I returned to the UK in 1996 and a lot has changed since then over in the US. That sort of stuff certainly would not be the sort of belief encouraged at the little Baptist church I used to go to (occasionally) over there.

I guess part of the trouble with the way Christianity is interpreted in parts of the US is that for many sects it depends very heavily on the local preacher - if he's a loony likely his flock will be too.

‘Orthodox activists’ hijack controversial theater play for ‘blasphemy’

A vortex of corrupt politicians, prostitutes and a gay clergy-arch-devil in an iconic Moscow theater came to a halt as self-proclaimed Christian activists climbed the stage to denounce the “sodomy”. Some, however, took the stunt as part of the show.

The second act of the provocative play An Ideal Husband staged at the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater by controversial Russian director, Konstantin Bogomolov, ends with a scene of a scantily clad woman rising above the stage with her arms spread, as “Dorian Gray” passionately dances with an apparently homosexual “priest-turned-Mephistopheles.” The priest then kneels and prays at the soaring woman.

Then, seemingly in line with this cacophony of images, several people calling themselves Orthodox Christian “activists” took to the stage and shouted out their condemnation of the play. They said the episode, as well as other provocative scenes, blatantly mocks the crucifix and Jesus Christ himself.

A message posted on the official Facebook page of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater soon after the incident made it clear the action was an “attempt to disrupt the play.”

“At the end of the second act, the infamous provocateur Enteo came on stage with a support team. They shouted: “How can you tolerate the mockery of our faith? Why do you hate Christ so much, while he was crucified for us,” the message quoted the “activists” as saying, identifying the group’s leader as Dmitriy ‘Enteo’ Tsorionov.

Scuffles ensued at the front of the stage as the theatre’s staff, scene-shifters and theatre-goers attempted to pull of the “provocateurs” off the stage, the theater said, adding that the third act of the play started after ten minutes and went smoothly.

Photo from twitter.com user @cheparukhinPhoto from twitter.com user @cheparukhin

Dmitriy Enteo earned his public fame on the back of several stunts directed at the Pussy Riot punk band and their supporters, and has said that he consciously uses the same “art performance aesthetic”, but for opposite aims.

Enteo had a different account of the incident, blasting the play as “hideous blasphemy,” “sodomy” and “infernal raving” on his Vkontakte page. He said that their action was peaceful, and they did not resist the “security guards,” who started “beating” them. They simply kept appealing to the audience and saying that mocking God is “unacceptable.” Some of the people supported their “cause” with applause, other sympathizers got up and left the play, Enteo claimed.

But some of the theater-goers present at the time of the stunt said in comments on the theater’s Facebook page that the people who got on stage behaved like blatant hooligans, with a female activist shouting hysterically and then throwing and damaging stage microphones.

Ironically, many in the audience took the antics happening on stage for part of the already unorthodox comedy, a witness told RIA Novosti. The “activists” seemed to fit the bizarre mix of characters from several works of Oscar Wilde, Anton Chekhov, Goethe and the postmodern Russian dramatist, Vladimir Sorokin, who all appeared in a contemporary setting.

Only several minutes after the initial applause given as they thought to cunning improvisation, did the audience realize it was indeed an attempt to disrupt the play. While some chose to leave, most others were hooked by the farcical antics of the stunt, and stayed until the end of the play.

This theater action is the latest in a series of attempts by self-proclaimed Orthodox Christian activists to forcefully protest against ideas they consider offensive to their beliefs. Previous incidents included a “missionary flashmob” in Moscow’s Darwin museum, “an action of the Orthodox inquisition” at an office of a Russian opposition party, and assaults on LGBT activists and Pussy Riot supporters.

Recently, one such activist was handed a one-year suspended sentence for firing eye irritant at a gay rights campaigner during a rally in May, but most others, including Enteo, have never been held accountable.
Director Bogomolov later reacted to the incident during the play on his Facebook page only by saying that it was not worth doing a favor of “advertising for this poor fool.”

Known for his controversial plays, loosely based on the works of renowned authors, but showing the problems of modern society in a grotesque and provocative manner, Bogomolov earlier described An Ideal Husband as a “trash comedy” depicting the “trash” realities of present-day Russia.

Russian theatre lovers are divided over Bogomolov’s plays, and particularly over his staging of several avant-garde pieces in the iconic Chekhov Moscow Art Theater. Controversy over his latest play based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel, The Brothers Karamazov, prompted Bogomolov to announce he is leaving the theater after disagreeing to make unspecified changes to the play.

Child 'training' book triggers backlash

BBC News. Aidan Lewis, Washington. 11 December 2013

A child-raising book that advocates whipping with branches and belts has sold hundreds of thousands of copies to evangelical Christians. But the deaths of three children whose parents appear to have been influenced by the authors' teachings have provoked a growing backlash.

The implements can vary. For a child under one year old, a willowy branch or a 1ft (30cm) ruler is recommended. For older children, a larger branch or a belt.

But the objective of the "spanking" described in Michael and Debi Pearl's To Train Up a Child is the same - making children surrender completely to their parents' will.

"Training is the conditioning of the child's mind before the crisis arises; it is preparation for future, instant, unquestioning obedience," reads a passage from the book's first chapter.

The "training" is meant to start early and pre-empt the need for punishment. But if the child is already rebellious, parents are told to "use whatever force is necessary to bring him to bay".

"If you have to sit on him to spank him then do not hesitate. And hold him there until he is surrendered... Defeat him totally."

Hannah (not her real name) grew up in a community of Independent Fundamental Baptists in north-western Florida. Her parents obtained copies of books by the Pearls when she was about nine and her sister seven.

The spanking began shortly afterwards and continued for at least eight years. In the first five years, it usually happened several times daily.

One day, when she was 14 or 15, her father heard a story about Hannah getting into a fight with a boy at church.

"I'm still not sure honestly what I was being accused of, but my dad just completely flipped out because whatever he heard was just atrocious," she says.

He used wooden rulers, or yardsticks, to spank her, snapping about five in the course of the beating - her mother kept a dozen in the house because they broke so often.

"When I couldn't sit down a couple of days later he was like: 'Stop being so melodramatic, what's wrong with you?' Then he had mother look and [my coccyx] was incredibly bruised and swollen."

Hannah, now in her mid-20s, says her father was "horrified" and never spanked her again. But her mother continued, using a plastic blind handle that she thought was less likely to leave marks on her children's skin.

Like other people who have witnessed Michael Pearl's advice being put into practice, Hannah says her parents were seduced by the idea of a simple formula that would make their children compliant.

"The problem is that [Pearl] tells you you have to break your children," she says. "And to get there you have to be completely ruthless."

To Train Up a Child is widely seen as the most extreme of the publications produced by conservative Christians in the US who advocate corporal punishment.

It is produced by the Pearls' organisation, No Greater Joy Ministries, which is attached to the church where Michael Pearl is a pastor in Pleasantville, Tennessee. First published in 1994, the book soon became popular among fundamentalist, non-denominational groups outside mainstream Christian culture.

Within these tight-knit communities, many families educate their children at home, viewing schools as having a harmful social environment and being insufficiently religious. The Pearls started homeschooling their children in the 1970s, when the practice was still novel.

Books, magazine and videos produced by the Pearls are passed around between families, or given as gifts for new-born babies and couples getting married.

Elizabeth Esther, a blogger who grew up in a conservative Christian community in California and describes herself as a "recovering fundamentalist", says that in her church the Pearls were "basically held up as the sterling example of how to raise your children before God".

The group said its revenue for the 2012-2013 tax year was $1.5m, 60% of which came from sales. Some products are donated to prisoners and military families, and boxes of books have been sent to US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

To Train Up a Child has sold more than 800,000 copies, according to Michael Pearl. Sales have remained steady in recent years and are only boosted by attacks, he says. "We have several million very happy and cheerful parents and kids who've seen great, wonderful fruit from that book and other things we've written."
Extracts

  • * For the under one year old, a little, ten- to twelve-inch long, willowy branch (striped of any knots that might break the skin) about one-eighth inch diameter is sufficient. Sometimes alternatives have to be sought. A one-foot ruler, or its equivalent in a paddle, is a sufficient alternative. For the larger child, a belt or larger tree branch is effective.

    * The parents who put off training until the child is old enough to discuss issues or receive explanations find their child a terror long before he understands the meaning of the word. A newborn soon needs training

    * PARENTS MUST ASSUME THAT PART OF THE CHILD'S MORAL DUTY WHICH IS NOT YET FULLY DEVELOPED. The parents' role is not that of a policeman, but more like that of the Holy Spirit

    * When the time comes to apply the rod, take a deep breath, relax, and pray, "Lord, make this a valuable learning session. Cleanse my child of ill-temper and rebellion. May I properly represent your cause in this matter."

    * Make it a point never to use your hand for spanking. The hand swatting is a release of the parent's own frustration. Furthermore, where the child is concerned, the hand is for loving, not martial arts.

  • Matthew 18:2-6
He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. "And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

    Matthew 18:10
"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

    1 Peter 2:2-3
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

    Mark 10:13-16
People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.

Too true. The New Testament, specifically the Gospel, presents a difficult way to lead a life. Harming a child (or anyone else) is absolutely against Jesus' teachings.

Proverbs 13:24
New International Version (NIV)
24 Whoever spares the rod hates their children,
but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.

Which is of course from the Old Testament.

The fundamental point about Christianity is that a New Covenant was struck between Humanity and God (in all his avatars) which replaced the old testament. Otherwise we'd all still be sacrificing lambs, wearing plaid, and building battlements on our houses. (I think all those are genuine commandments from Deuteronomy - if they aren't the real ones are equally daft)

Those alleged Christians - perhaps a majority - who quote the Old Testament to justify judgemental or cruel actions have missed Jesus's updated instructions - as set out in the Gospels - entirely.

I hope He has an awful lot of patience.

More than I have when doing tech support for some customer who blatantly refuses to accept the instructions telling him how not to use the product should apply to him. Its usually a him.

When I was a child in a RCC Primary School the importance of The New Covenant was always stressed. In particular that it superseded things like an eye for an eye.

NAKED SEATTLE INTRUDER RECITES SCRIPTURE IN HOME
USA: It was little comfort to the residents of a Seattle home along Lake Washington when the naked man who crashed through their front door began loudly reciting scripture.

Police say a woman in the home called 911 at about 2am on Tuesday. Officers spotted a naked man walking down the street, talking to himself. He took off running, and they chased and caught him.

Police say after they arrested the 20-year-old, he told them he had taken LSD.

'My passenger is trying to take over!’ Pilot fights off attack by 82yo Christian missionary to safely land plane

A 23-year-old Australian pilot of a small aircraft repelled an attempt to switch off the engines from an 82-year-old passenger – himself a professional pilot – during a regional flight, before safely landing the aircraft in a field.

The twin-engine Beechcraft 76 Duchess took off for a one-hour chartered flight from Bankstown to Cowra in New South Wales on Monday afternoon with just two people on board – James Chandler, the pilot, and Les Nixon, a well-known Christian missionary.

About half an hour into the flight, air traffic control received a “pan-pan” distress call, meaning that an emergency is occurring onboard, but that no one’s life was in danger at the moment.

"Pan pan, pan pan, pan pan… Bravo Foxtrot Papa... my passenger is trying to take over…" an evidently flustered Chandler said in a recording obtained by local TV channel Nine Network.

“The engines…” then the voice trails off.

"The pilot said that the passenger started grabbing the controls, turning off fuel lines and turning buttons randomly on and off," police Acting Inspector Gareth Smith later told the media. ...

This guy may have said some nasty anti gay things but is he any different from a lot of mainstream priests/ministers?

A lot of derogatory remarks about the "prophet" would be reasonable imho. Its not the job of a christian fundamentalist to say nice things about islam.

A Christian street preacher targeted Muslims and gay people in "religiously aggravated" sermons, a court has heard.

Michael Overd is alleged to have made "belligerent and angry" remarks over a loudspeaker system set up in the High Street of Taunton, Somerset, last year.

One witness told the town's magistrates' court Mr Overd also disparaged the Prophet Muhammad during one outburst.

He denies using threatening or abusive words. ...

Damn: looking for that old Spitting Image sketch where God is handling two incoming prayers simultaneously, one from Peter Sutcliffe and one from James Anderton, and goes into a meltdown... the Yorkshire Ripper in one ear, a Chief of Police in the other, both of whom are saying they do what they do because You clearly ordained it, Lord....

Well not attacking anyone exactly, but driving like a maniac, perjuring herself and perverting the course of justice.

Deranged MP compares her conviction to the persecution of Jesus and writes to her fellow MPs begging them to pray for her.

I know they say that there are certain seats where a hat-stand with a red/blue (take your pick) rosette on it would get elected, but an MP this delusional has surely committed professional suicide.

This totally weird! I get tyhat she is very upset but isn't there a responsible adult to take her phone away? :(

This guy may have said some nasty anti gay things but is he any different from a lot of mainstream priests/ministers? ....

I'd say he very much is, at least in my admittedly limited UK-based church experiences over the past 40+ years (Methodist, CofE, RC, happy-clappy, high Anglican plus a few others). I've never heard a vicar or priest express anti-gay, anti-islam or similar stuff in public or private. And I live in the environ you mentioned above. Even when being around charismatic/evangelical types the main themes have been based around the tenets of Jesus's teachings. He never mentions non-hetero people in the sources we have today.

Really cutting remarks.

A visiting pastor caused a stir while delivering a brief sermon at a South Carolina megachurch on Sunday ― ending her speech with a threat of violence against critics of two fellow pastors.

Pastor Hope Carpenter, co-founder of San Jose’s Redemption Church, was defending John and Aventer Gray, the controversial pastors of Greenville’s Relentless Church. A local daily newspaper, the Greenville News, has published several stories in recent months that call out the Grays for their expensive tastes.

Carpenter, who used to lead the Greenville congregation with her husband Ron Carpenter Jr., was asked to speak for a few minutes at her old church on Sunday. She ended the speech about holding fast to faith by pouring praise on the Grays, who are married.

“I love you, Pastor John and Pastor Aventer. I believe in you,” Carpenter said from the stage, standing directly in front of the two pastors. “I’m praying for you. I’m rooting for you!”

Then, her speech shifted dramatically.

“I cut people. I got a knife right in that pocketbook,” Carpenter said, pointing to her seat and eliciting shocked looks from Aventer Gray.
“Greenville News, come on. We done went through this,”

Still MP for Peterborough.

(Interestingly, an MP is only disqualified from membership of the House of Commons under s.1 of the Representation of the People Act 1981 if he is sentenced to twelve months or more in prison. This would mean that it’s theoretically possible for a convicted rapist to remain as an MP).

A real Bible basher.

A 32-year-old man found to have been insane when he beat his neighbour to death with a crowbar, posted about 2,000 videos of himself reading the bible on YouTube, the Central Criminal Court has heard.

Richard McLaughlin, with an address at The Laurels, Woodtown Lodge, Sligo, was previously found not guilty by reason of insanity of the murder of Jimmy 'James' Loughlin (aged 20) at Connolly Street in Sligo on February 24, 2018, and committed to the Central Mental Hospital.

The court heard that Mr McLaughlin broke down the door of Mr Loughlin's home and beat him to death with a crowbar while suffering from delusions brought on by paranoid schizophrenia. Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan said the deceased died from traumatic head injuries sustained during an assault.
