Hello! It's been a while since I've posted here, but an unnerving incident tonight has brought me here seeking answers. I'm posting this in General Forteana for lack of knowing where to put it, as I have no idea what the mysterious photos might have captured at all, but please move it to a more appropriate place if necessary.

The story is this: a close friend of mine, while walking home tonight, took a picture of the moon above the building where he lives. He sent me the picture via his phone, and I told him the moon looked very nice, but what was that shape in his living room window? At first, I thought it was a cat, but then remembered my friend didn't have a cat. He was rather startled, as he'd only been paying attention to the moon and not to his darkened window.

He'd taken two pictures, as it happened, both times catching this odd shape, but in the second picture, it had clearly moved.

We've spent the evening poring over the pictures; my friend has been outside his building trying to recreate the scene, but no luck. According to my friend, there are no traffic or Christmas lights to reflect off the windows, and subsequent photos show nothing.

He's really spooked!

Any idea what is captured in these pictures? They were taken with an iPhone 12.

The first photo is the shape I at first took for a cat, the second was taken in quick succession, the third shows the window normally. Two enlarged versions of the relevant areas are included. (I hope this works!)

Worth noting - my friend says he's not felt any "weird vibes" in the place but has on occasion heard what sounds like a human sigh next to him in the bedroom. From my own experience, I can say the hallway into the building (through the door with the awning) is quite creepy, though!

Glare/flare caused by the moon. Blue dots show up in iPhone photos when there is a light source. In the one without it in front of the window the blue/green dot appears on the Christmas light near the umbrella.

Lens flare.

A Google using the search term “lens flare in iphone 12” will reveal lots of complaining owners and examples of the phenomenon:

Nice to see you posting again U! I can easily see why you thought the first image to be a cat. Now I've stared at it though I can't unsee the small spooky face slightly above and to the left of the cat's head! As MO says above probably lens flare.

Wonderful to see you @Ulalume !!!!!

could you try to recreate the effect?

Sorry to digress, but can I ask what this is;

Thanks for the replies. Nice to hear from you all again! :)

@lorac61469 - thank you very much for your assessment and pointing out the green dot near the umbrella - it's the kind of small detail I'm prone to miss.

Hi @Frideswide, lovely to see you! No luck in recreating the effect, though if it was indeed a lens flare from the moon, the moon might have moved too much to replicate the exact same position.

@Floyd1 That's an electrical meter box, albeit a bit of an old-fashioned one.

I will let my friend know that he's probably being haunted by a lens flare and not a flying ghost cat. (At least, as far as we know!) :litg:

Looks like a reflection of an owl, rather than a cat.

Even without the known iphone issues, I would have guessed a phone camera artifact. Not only are they prone to odd flares due to their tiny lenses, etc., the software in modern phones can have a lot of "correction" built in that can make the image anything but an accurate account of reality.

As for the thing that Floyd1 circled, it's obviously the ghost of a Victorian era scullery maid, carrying a long towel and smoking a cigarette.
