LOVELAND – Animal control officers say some children fishing at the Jayhawker Ponds Wednesday had a close encounter with a large reptile.

"Well, I was night fishin' with my friends and we were getting ready to set up to throw our poles out in the water and then we saw something really big try and jump onto the dock and it tried to get through the holes but missed because it was too big, and fell right back into the water," said 10-year-old Josh Peck. "It's unbelievable that I saw it."

Animal control officers believe the reptile was a 5 to 7-foot-long alligator or cayman. They suspect someone had kept the reptile as a pet, got tired of it and decided to dump it.

They believe the animal is nocturnal and that is why it came out at night.

Jayhawker Ponds will be closed until further notice. Park officials are planning on capturing the reptile one night in the next couple of days.
