Priest faked abduction to go to casino

From AFP
February 03, 2004

A SOUTH African priest who faked his own abduction to spend time at a Johannesburg entertainment complex may have to pay more than $US70,000 run up by police in search operations, newspapers said Monday.

Paul Beyl, a pastor in South Africa's political capital Pretoria, claimed he was abducted from his home on Thursday night while trying to park his car in the garage.

While police mounted a massive search with helicopters, dog units and highway patrols, Beyl checked into the Gold Reef City entertainment complex in Johannesburg – which boasts a casino, musical revues and eateries – after dumping his vehicle.

His congregation meanwhile held prayers for the 40-year-old pastor, who walked into a Johannesburg police station on Saturday and claimed he had been dumped in a field by his kidnappers. But he later admitted lying and checking into the Gold Reef City.

Pretoria police commissioner Amon Mashigo was not amused, saying police would submit claims totalling nearly 500,000 rand ($US70,370 ) for "wasted man hours and wear and tear on the vehicles and helicopters," according to The Star daily.

"These vital resources needed in fighting crime could have been used effectively for finding and rescuing people who were really in distress at that time," he said.

"This type of behaviour cannot be allowed and this man must face the full wrath of the law."

Minister who faked hijacking resigns

February 02, 2004, 06:52 PM

Paul Beyl, the Wonderboom Evangelical Reformed Church minister who allegedly staged his own hijacking and abduction, has resigned from his post. A colleague of the minister told SABC News that his resignation is with immediate effect.

Beyl briefly appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court this morning and is facing charges of perjury after he allegedly lied about being hijacked. The court postponed the case until February 19. Beyl is out on a warning until his next appearance.

A massive manhunt was launched after Beyl's wife reported her husband missing last week. His vehicle was found in Arcadia with a broken rear passenger window on Saturday. Beyl later turned up at Johannesburg Central police station. After intensive questioning he apparently conceded that he was not hijacked. Beyl also allegedly told police that the hijacking incident was a scam and that he had been at Gold Reef City, a Casino south of Johannesburg.
