For those of you who don't know what red rooms are they room were people are tortured and killed that are streamed live on the net for people who pay.

I think it's plausible because the deep web is hard to monitor.

Certainly plausible.

I'm surprised this isn't already an Eli Roth film, although the concept is I guess covered slightly by the Hostel film (minus the live streaming).

A friend has dabbled in the dark net and seen some grim stuff. I'm too squeamish for all that myself. I reckon it's plausible, what with all the immigrants currently streaming through Europe.

The TV show Criminal Minds has a number of episodes based on this or similar concepts.

What do immigrants have to do with this? As I understand it, nobody has actually found an existing snuff movie. So this doesn't seem more likely.

The Red Room is a 1999 Japanese torture-porn straight-to-video movie.

Rumours circulate of snuff movies made for private sponsors or they may circulate on the peer-to-peer channels of extreme abusers. There are also cases where torture murders have been captured on phones etc. for the narcissistic enjoyment of the criminals. Some of these have escaped into the public domain.

It is important to remember, however, that the snuff movie began as a social panic, engineered to stoke public concerns about pornography. The notion was that the High Street was awash with the things: all you had to do was ask your local porn-dealer for something a bit harder!

As business plans go, snuff games are high-risk, niche-market and impossible to advertise. Capitalism will produce only fake goods in this line.

Plenty of genuine atrocity pictures can be found online without delving into the murk of any Hidden Web. Presumably these sites profit from human misery: there are plenty of morbidly-curious punters out there. The existence of these freak-shows, however, makes me wonder why anyone needs to create a real-life Red Room!

The book 'Killing for culture' which is due to be re-issued imminently examines the issue in some detail and concludes the same. There are presumably enough gore-core sites that pander to the appetites of people wishing to watch death on film that there isn't the market for real life snuff.

That doesn't preclude the existence of snuff in a private collection somewhere (like the movie 8MM), just makes it extremely unlikely.

Didn't we have a 'Death in Film' thread somewhere?

Never say never because I think their is very rich and very sick people out there who are willing to pay to see someone killed in a live video stream from 3 world country's and places with bad human rights records like China.

I remember seeing an episode of, umm, something (Millennium?) with that exact premise. In a doubly-fortean but slightly silly twist, the protagonist turned out to be the actual Zodiac killer (he got away again).

It's also a subplot in that Cradle of Filth film, iirc.

Here in the peach state of Georgia, we've had a local crime where somebody was killed and the killing was apparently streamed live online (or it was filmed and then uploaded). The local news has said the footage has been turned over to the GBI ( the local equivalent of the FBI). I'm limited in what I do on my phone, but I'll link some news articles about it tomorrow. Not sure if it counts as a snuff film though.

I have seen so nasty sh*t online, people being killed, set on fire etc, but not the red room type snuff movies, this was the theme of Lee Childs 20th book 'Make Me'

Police confirm to Channel 2 Action News that they are investigating a deadly shooting in Northwest Atlanta that was recorded and then uploaded onto social media. Investigators said they were called out to a person shot on Alfred Road NW shortly before 3:30 p.m. Officers found the man who had been shot and tried to perform CPR, but the man died on the scene.

Family members told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes that the murder was recorded by a witness and then uploaded to Instagram. They said they believe the shooter is a teenage relative of the victim.

Armin Meiwes, the "Rotenburg Cannibal" recorded his consensual part-live-consumption, then murder, then more consumption, of a willing participant in 2001, though the incident wasn't broadcast/made available for public viewing.

Yes , Millennium.
Series 2, episode 13 - "The Mikado".

Curiosity being what it is, I looked up the account on Wikipedia... And wished I hadn't. :worry:

By coincidence I was just listening to a podcast about the murder in Canada of Serena McKay, which was streamed on facebook live in 2017.

Unfortunately snuff movies have moved from the world of urban legend to indisputable reality.

However, I don't think it's been mentioned on this thread that the 'red room' idea is fairly implausible because tor connections are far too slow to stream live video on.
