Scary Australian Caves mentioned in FT ?

Sorry mod ! This started out as a single post on another thread, but have expanded here !

The other threads about caves and missing people reminded me of a tantalisingly short article in FT a couple of years ago or so about a rock formation in Australia that the author and his friend had been to visit.

It had various stories of this kind attached to it, criminals on the run taking refuge and disappearing, along with the cops that were trailing them and subsequetly the search party that went to look for the criminals and cops. And later, various people taking shelter in bad weather, unsuspecting shepherds and other folk that had entered the rock formation and had never come out

The article had really left me wanting to know more about the place and it's legends, though I can't remember the name of the author, the name of the rock formation, or the name of the area in Australia..

Can anyone else remember the name of the place or anything else about it ?

All the more scary stories are welcome !

Ah, yes; the black mountain. I was rereading that one last week. Very creepy and worth a visit with a long piece of string and a really big gun...

Is that Black Mountain or Black Mesa!

I'm not familiar with tales of "The Black Mountain". If you can give me more geographical information, I might be able to check it out.

And no, it's not Black Mountain in Canberra. The only thing mysterious about that is why people go up Telstra Tower to the restaraunt. I haven't heard of anyone going missing there in years.

Of course, the whole story is reminiscent of Picnic at Hanging Rock. But that was in Victoria.

I definately read an article about the black mountains online. I am not entirely certain it was an FT one though.

It was one mans account of his investigations into strange events and disappearances in and around these 'mountains'. I remember being shocked by his accounts so it must have been a good read.

Good luck trying to find the elusive article. Found a link while I was searching for it but it is not the original one I read.

Link :eek!!!!:

We stopped for refreshments at the historic Lion’s Den pub. Near Cooktown we saw Black Mountain, a hill comprised of thousands of rounded, black granite boulders, considered taboo by local Aboriginal people. B,L,D

There was some links about UFO sightings around the Black Mountains but the URLs Were all Blurred and some had strings attached

South of Cooktown? Hmm, a bit out of my way. Could stop off there on my way back from OS later in the year. Anyone else want to come on an expedition to look around?

We can question the locals, try to find the locations of some of the incidents, before the local populace chase us out of town for being too curious, and getting too close to the truth?

Let's see, what's a good time of year to visit FNQ?

The Black Mountaiin

There was an article in issue 150 of Fortean Times (Sep 2001). It was written by Ivan Mckerle, and included a section recounting the events of a night he and his friend spent on the mountain. It certainly sounds a strange locale based on the article.

Thanks Sthedaw ! Now I can look it up my archived copies of FT.

black mountain

Hey HAARP I've been wondering about that article as well, but as I'm in Sydney and all my FT's are in Ireland, can you tell me where the black mountain in that article actually is? Cheers

No problem SpaceJesus - I'll be able to do that with in a couple of hours.. Look in here at about 4pm gmt and I'll see what I can do !

that's in about four hours time (not sure what time that would be in Oz ?)

Haarp x

That would be around 1 am here.

I'd also like to know where that was. Although I don't see myself getting up that way for a while, it would still be useful for future reference.

are there any sites in the US with similar properties and stories behind them? sounds almost as if that bushman in the one article was clawing his way towards the gates of hell.
