What surprises me more is that when they first put guns on aeroplanes it did not occur to them that it might have unexpected consequences and they shot bits off of their own planes, including bits of wing and tailplane, before they decided to fit bars to restrict the movement of swivel-mountings for machine guns.
IIRC the first guns intended to fire through propellers also managed to damage the propeller until they perfected the design.

Yes and they were dealing with fractions of a second and millimetres.
