The 'Thing' In The Charterhouse

The Charterhouse Centre has another story, which I heard third-hand.

The story goes that a D of E expedition group had been staying at this centre at some time in the 1980s or 1990s. They were staying with a couple of adult supervisors and the young daughter of one of the supervisors.

The D of E participants stayed up late, planning their route, while the daughter was sent to bed. Some time later she emerged claiming she couldn't sleep because she saw faces in her room when the lights were turned off.

Her father, humouring her, said he would swap rooms with her.

It was only later, after he had been in the darkened room, that he came back saying, "She's right!"

The warden told him that many miners' children had been educated at Charterhouse before spending their own short, brutal lives in the pit. Charterhouse was a place where they had felt happy and in this way, they had never left.

My mother was acquainted with the girl's father and told this story to me.

Posting it on this thread as it's connected to the same building. I was wondering if anyone else knew anything about this story or knew of someone who'd had a similar experience?
