I was walking downtown going to meet my husband, and, for some reason, the greenery next to the parking garage caught my eye. Nothing seemed amiss, nevertheless, I said (in my mind) to the space behind a sapling that I knew "they" were there.

The sapling's branches started waving back!

(Of course, it was just the wind coming up, right?)

Well, "they" obviously liked you! Leave it at that - and enjoy.

Some sort of cat of bird or something noticed you looking in their direction?

Not that I'm trying make it boring or anything

Hmmm... best not to do that too often. 'They' will target you if you do it a lot... ;)

...don't tell the trees, 'cause the trees don't need to know

Yes. Hmm. You do have a coat?

It was a willow sapling.

I've not read Tolkien, however. (Yes, I can hear the collective gasp at that. Had to look up "Old Man Willow" through Google.)
