the wrath of god

any thoughts about this meteorite in iraq thing? odd to think that some of the most powerful images in semitic/european culture (fire and brimstone, flood and famine, flames raining etc) might actually all derive from real events, so traumatic and terrible that they were carved into the mind like that. one wonders what the pre-impact cultures must have been like (old kingdom egypt and the akkadians, although the latter weren't a very nice bunch) - all light and happiness? remember the middle ages and the constant plagues, and the armies of flagellants, ascetics and inquisitors they produced. did all that sackcloth-and-ashes, fear the wrath of yahweh stuff first crop up way way way back then, almost at the very beginning? must have touched something very profound in the human consciousness. must have been truly, unimaginably horrible to be around, if it's even half as bad as the astronomers say it might have been. quite a good article on the fort.com main page today.

It might explain why Western religion/culture is generally obsessed with death and punishment. The two other major ancient civilisations - Indian and Chinese - don't seem nearly so doomy and angst-ridden.

yeah, and the european traditions (celtic/slavic/germanic) don't seem so traumatised either.
