A ZIMBABWEAN colleague based in South Africa called me early this year and vowed that none of her relations and friends would die from chronic ailments as she had discovered a natural therapy for those conditions.
"I have realised that urine is actually an effective therapy to some of these ailments and, believe me, I have also found that a good number of South Africans that are on that therapy as well. I have been taking a glass full every morning for nearly three months now and the results have been amazing," said the woman who said athlete's foot that had tormented her for so many years had been completely healed.
I was horrified and disgusted. Imagine the terrible ammonia smell of urine soaked blankets from the children's bedroom?
What of the strong stench of urine from the men's urinary?
Urine is a waste product and how then can it be healthy to drink?
"I no longer have the constant cough from chronic bronchitis I used to have and skin infections that were asthma related. I will come and demonstrate to all of you that urine is not harmful when ingested. The results are just tremendous," said the 44-year-old woman.
She has since sent me a book and website addresses on the Internet and it was interesting to note that there had been many conferences held in the past, the latest being the World Urine Conference held in Germany.
The Golden Fountain, is a complete guide to urine therapy written by Coen van der Kroon, an international authority, writer and broadcaster on the subject who now runs his own urine therapy counseling service in Amsterdam.
The book has documented interesting research based on interviews and testimonies by patients who have experienced relief and healing from many different ailments. The book has also documented testimonies by doctors that have prescribed this therapy to their patients with overwhelming success.
Urine therapy, according to the book, has proven effective in the management of immunity-related diseases like cancer allergies and even Aids.
"In 1998 I myself had cancer in the bowel, liver and lymph system. For the cancer in the bowel I had three operations within three months, after which I was only skin and bone. For the liver and lymph glands I was offered chemotherapy, which I declined. All the anaesthetics, antibiotics and post-operative drugs had weakened the immune systems to rock bottom, and because of this I had already started to lose great bunches of hair.
"I had asked God in prayer, to bring me anything I needed to get well again, and the very next morning I was given by a friend a "Water Of Life" book, which in medical terms is uropathy or urine therapy, written by J.W. Armstrong. Such is God's immediate response," says Ms TA of Australia.
"I had been suffering from migraine headaches for 20 years. Because I also suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, I was often taking pain-killers. Then I started drinking my urine. A few moths later, my arthritis disappeared and so did my headaches," says Ms BA of England.
"For a long time I have been suffering from strong hay fever attacks. Among the symptoms are itching and swollen eyes, asthmatic conditions and constant sneezing.
"I started to clean my eyes every morning with some cotton wool soaked in urine. From that moment on, the itching and swelling of the eyes disappeared, the sneezing stopped and the asthma attacks have become bearable," says Ms EC of the Netherlands.
"I was regularly suffering from sun allergy. Since I heard about urine therapy, I just rub my urine on the affected skin parts and usually the allergy rapidly disappears and the skin stops itching," says Mr LC of Germany.
"I am a PWA (person with Aids) and have been doing urine therapy for three months. My fatigue and dizziness dissipated within the first month. I experienced intense eye itchiness. A few drops of fresh urine stopped it immediately. If I forgot to take the urine one day I will pay for it with fatigue. Also my lymph gland swelling is reduced by 50 percent," said Mr B of the United States.
"I have been doing urine therapy for four months now. I am a PWA. My only symptom was a low T-cell count. My last test showed my t-cell count went up from 285 to 489," says Mr L also of the United States.
"Mr S: The patient was HIV positive and was suffering from several Aids-related symptoms, such as oral and anal fungus infections, tiredness, red and itching eyes, difficulties to get moving. Subjectively the patient felt healthy again after practising urine therapy for several months, there was no longer any evidence of the presence of the Aids virus in his blood. Without any problems the patient returned to a heavy work schedule, he had the same amount of energy and vitality as he used to have to do his work," reveals a case history from the Swiss Dr.med.U.E. Hastler which, Van der Kroon mentions with the greatest caution.
He has, however, said he had heard about similar positive experiences with urine therapy in the US.
A Mr EJP from the Netherlands had this to say about urine therapy: "I think we can also expect a lot from this method in the fight against Aids. I have seen Aids patients start urine therapy in spite of such trying circumstances, and these experiences are certainly encouraging. Two years ago, a friend of mine was examined for a stomach ulcer and was diagnosed as having full-blown Aids (she had T4 of 80; according to her doctors she had three to six months to live) She reacted badly to AZT and could not tolerate other medication.
"Two to four months after starting urine therapy, the spots on her skin disappeared including the Candida fungus which had turned her throat entirely white.
"Her energy returned, probably due to urine therapy combined with a healthy combination of plant-based remedies which strengthened her resistance. Now more than two years later, she is entirely capable of maintaining her household and caring for her child. These last two years have certainly not been easy, partly due to the fact that without AZT, and considering her general condition, she would not live longer than six months."
These are just some of the many testimonies included in the book that may serve to convince the "doubting Thomases" about the healing effects of urine therapy.
Urine therapy is the most primitive, original and one of the simplest forms of homoeopathy or isopathy and although this natural healing is still widely used in India, it is by no means a uniquely Eastern tradition.
In fact, the use of urine as medicine in one form or another can be found in many medical traditions of indigenous peoples or tribes who are still in close contact with nature.
Gypsies and Eskimos still use urine therapy as medicine. Eskimo women, in particular, use urine as shampoo; it gives hair extra body and a beautiful shine.
Also many people in Western Europe and America are familiar with the use of urine in treating warts, chilblained hands and feet, and as a disinfectant for minor wounds.
The use of urine is also rooted in the European tradition.
Doctors in ancient Greece reportedly used urine for healing wounds.
But with the erosion of age-old cultural practices and the advent of technology, humanity has tended to stray further and further from nature.
"Our interest in natural medicines, including urine therapy, has therefore decreased. Furthermore, in many respects, we have turned away from our own bodies, making urine therapy psychologically inaccessible to us; in other words we think our own body products are disgusting," says the book.
Urine is free and always available for those who need it. In a world in which money talks, urine therapy can appear to be threatening to those who earn their living by manufacturing or prescribing medicine.
"In short, urine therapy does not fit in the current economic picture of scarcity. Many people believe we are healthier nowadays thanks to advances in medical science. This is partly true. The flip side of the coin is that we have had to give up a great deal of freedom and independence.
"The enormous efforts of medical science are partly based upon the failure to really cure illnesses. Fighting symptoms is considered to be crucial, but this does not take care of the cause. Urine therapy, being a real nature cure, not only reduces the symptoms, but also deals with the cause of the illness," the book says.
Van der Kroon, however, cautions that urine therapy is not a "wonder drug" that relieves all symptoms.
"Illness always has several causes and is usually not only physical. Feelings, thoughts and the environment also play a role. If you apply urine therapy in order to get rid of a symptom, but after improvement continue to treat yourself and your body carelessly, the symptoms might reappear.
"It is, therefore, important to also pay attention to other factors playing a role in the healing process."
According to the book, in theory, urine therapy is effective for every illness and a diagnosis is not necessary prior to applying urine therapy.
This therapy is a total treatment aimed at strengthening or recovering balance in the body.
Because there are countless ways in which the balance can be upset, there are also countless illnesses.
"Medical science has conveniently categorised and named these illnesses. Urine therapy is a very personal treatment and can be applied in many ways.
"Likewise, an imbalance in the body can occur in countless ways and on different levels. Because the application does require medication which goes with a certain symptom, a diagnosis is not necessary," says the book.
"Nevertheless we are so accustomed to receiving diagnosis, it is for most of us reassuring to know which 'label' is attached to our illness."
Former Indian prime minister Morarji Desai for years spoke about the miraculous therapy that kept him fit and healthy in spite of his advanced age and lived to reach a century.
When Van der Kroon visited him in 1993 Desai was 99 years old and was still in good health. He drank a glass of urine daily and washed himself with it. He says his skin was remarkably radiant and soft.
"Nowadays the taboos surrounding bodily excretions are great. We consider many things to be dirty as soon as they leave the body, and forget that those same substances just a few minutes ago were an integral part of the body.
"The majority of useful, vital substances are found in the morning urine. The odour of urine is much less repulsive than most people think since most associate urine with public toilets," he says.
Van der Kroon was as sceptical as any Westerner would be when he was first persuaded to try urine therapy while staying in an Indian ashram (small monastery).
He had cut his foot badly but applying conventional antiseptics had had no effect. When, in desperation, he followed local advice and wrapped his foot in a cloth soaked with his own urine, the wound began to heal completely within days.
This experience prompted him to embark on a long journey around the world to research urine's history, uses and efficacy.
The Golden Fountain, the most complete book to date on urine therapy, is the result of those investigations.
The author tackles the subject with sensitivity and conviction. He provides valuable research details, together with detailed case histories and a user friendly guide to urine therapy's practical application in relation to specific ailments.
One thing that everyone agrees upon, of course, is that it is absolutely free.
"This is information pharmaceutical companies would not want to hear of because they are in business and would like to rake as much profit from drugs, particularly in these years of the deadly HIV pandemic. Urine therapy is well worth giving a try," said the ecstatic Zimbabwean colleague based in South Africa.
Professor Gordon Chavunduka, president of the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers' Association (Zinatha) admitted that urine was frequently used as medicine but was not conversant on its application.
"Urine does have medicinal properties that are healthy for the body," he said.
Zinatha acting manager Mr Hezekias Bhebhe said urine could also be used to diffuse witchcraft by squirting the liquid on the juju or muti. It is also used to cast off witchcraft-induced spells.
In Zimbabwe, urine has traditionally been used to relieve minor burns. A man or boy would be asked to pee onto the affected area and in the majority of cases there was no need for medical attention from a health institution.
"Urine can also be ingested by a person who would have taken poison. It neutralises that poison. If you put droplets of urine in the ear of an unconscious man, he will regain consciousness.
"Urine is definitely something we prescribe on a regular basis," Mr Bhebhe said.
The Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, said in a telephone interview that he had heard about urine therapy but would rather stick to the traditional type of treatment, be it be traditional or homeopathy.
"It is still being researched and has not yet received acceptance and use. It is something we would be sceptical about because urine is full of urea, a result from excretion of waste from the kidneys and washed out through the bladder," he said.
However, research in many countries has proven the nutritional value of urine due to its high level of proteins, hormones, minerals, minerals and other valuable substances. These are easily assimilated and recycled by the body without any loss of energy, says the book.
"Urine contains immunologically active substances which fight viral and bacterial infections and boost the immunologically weak, as in the case with Aids, cancer, or any debilitating illness.
"Urine is a powerful cleansing agent which detoxifies and eliminates all poisonous elements."
