"Hate Crime" of War's Critic

Canadian Professor Accused
Of 'Hate Crimes' For
Criticizing US War
By Glenn Bohn and Kim Bolan
Vancouver Sun
10-12-1

"If you point to the factual record of U.S. foreign policy, you are now accused of spreading hate," she said. "It really is unbelievable."     A University of B.C. women's studies professor who criticized U.S. foreign policy has been accused of a hate crime -- publicly inciting hatred against Americans.   An unidentified B.C. resident alleged Oct. 4 that assistant professor Sunera Thobani violated the Criminal Code of Canada during an Oct. 1 speech to a women's conference in Ottawa, RCMP Corporal Michael Labossiere of the B.C. hate crime unit said Tuesday.   Thobani, a former president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, said in an interview Tuesday she had not heard anything about the complaint and she is curious to know who made it.   "This is just pure harassment," she said. "They are trying to silence dissent in this country."   Thobani said her speech was intended to explain how U.S. foreign policy has affected life in many countries of the world.   "If you point to the factual record of U.S. foreign policy, you are now accused of spreading hate," she said. "It really is unbelievable."   The RCMP's Labossiere wouldn't disclose any more specifics about the complaint or the complainant. He said he forwarded the complaint to the hate crimes unit of the Ottawa-Carleton police force, which has jurisdiction in the area where the offence is alleged to have occurred.   Ottawa police Detective Frank Corkery, a member of Ottawa's hate crime unit, wouldn't confirm whether police there are investigating Thobani.   Corkery said police generally don't discuss ongoing investigations or reveal the subject of an investigation until charges are laid and it becomes public knowledge.   However, the detective added: "Any complaint made to the hate crimes section is taken seriously and is investigated on the substance of the complaint.   Labossiere, who last week reported bomb threats had been made against Islamic mosques in Vancouver and Surrey, said he went public with the complaint against Thobani to show that majority groups can potentially be targets too.   "Here we have a complaint against someone who is obviously from a visible minority, whom the complainant feels is promoting hate," he said.   "Normally, people think it's a white supremist or Caucasians, promoting hate against visible minorities . . . We want to get the message out that it's wrong, all around."   Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Canada allows for a jail sentence of less than two years for anyone convicted of the "public incitement of hatred" against an identifiable group of people, when the comments lead to a breach of the peace.   An "identifiable group" is defined as any section of the public distinguished by colour, race, religion or ethnic origin.   However, the same section also provides some broadly worded legal defences. For instance, no one can be convicted "if the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit, and if on reasonable grounds he believed them to be true."   Murray Mollard, a lawyer and executive director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, said that, legally, a charge against Thobani would be an uphill battle for the prosecution.   Mollard also said the state shouldn't prosecute someone who criticizes public policies in a democratic forum.   "This is absolutely the wrong thing to do," he said. "We need to have an open debate about our response to Sept. 11."   Thobani received a standing ovation at the Women's Resistance Conference in Ottawa after she argued that the U.S. government -- not international terrorists -- is the most dangerous global force, "unleashing prolific levels of violence all over the world.   "From Chile to El Salvador, to Nicaragua to Iraq, the path of U.S. foreign policy is soaked in blood," she said in comments that received front-page coverage in Canada's daily newspapers, including The Vancouver Sun.   Many Canadians said Thobani's speech was an ill-timed and anti-American attack, while others accused the mainstream news media of a McCarthy-style witch-hunt.   Thobani said Tuesday she has been stunned by the reaction to her comments.   While she said she has received a lot of support, she has also been shocked by hateful e-mails and telephone calls not just from within Canada, but from the United States.   "It is just unbelievable what it is like," Thobani said. "I am just getting sent all this porn and hate mail."   She said the past week has made the controversies during her term as president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women "seem like a piece of cake."   But, she said she doesn't want to restrict her life because of the hate mail and threats, even though it has disrupted her life and her job.   "I have security outside my class," Thobani said.   Convictions for public incitement of hatred are rare in Canada, but not unprecedented.   In 1982, Alberta public high school teacher Jim Keegstra was fired for teaching students that the Holocaust -- where millions of Jews died in Nazi concentration camps -- was a fabrication of a "Jewish conspiracy" that wanted to destroy Christianity. The courts later convicted Keegstra of promoting hatred and ordered him to do 200 hours of community service work.   In 1999, a Christian evangelist in Ontario was convicted of inciting hatred against Muslims in flyers he distributed and in a phone-line message. Mark Harding received a three-month conditional sentence and was required to perform more than 300 hours of voluntary service for the Islamic community.   © Copyright 2001 Vancouver Sun

in the ruins

Hey! After The War Against Terrorism (TWAT), perhaps Jo Moore should consider hiring spin Ladens propaganda team and selling her services to Tony 'I'd like to buy the world, er, a coke' Blair. Interesting to note mr talliban bananas playing the urban legend/ panic game with talk of 'stay off planes and tall buildings'....
Providing we still have a democracy by then.

Stealing the Coins from their eyes

There was a thread in August/September, I think in NOTES & Qs on John Edward. Here is more just in time for sweeps.

Medium Crosses The Line: WTC Segment Canned
By Lisa de Moraes
Friday, October 26, 2001; Page C01

John Edward, the medium who hosts the chat-with-the-dead show "Crossing Over," has taped segments in which he purports to contact victims of the World Trade Center attacks. But America may never get to hear what they have to say because yesterday afternoon production house Studios USA axed the whole idea after reporters and station execs -- the two least queasy segments of society -- actually cringed. Studios USA Domestic Television President Steve Rosenberg says they scrapped the idea after getting a whiff of the negative reaction.

"This is too good a show to do what might offend the audience," he told The TV Column. "If in any way it gave offense to the audience, it's just a mistake."

Yesterday morning, however, a publicist representing the program confirmed that Edward had taped segments featuring family members of WTC attack victims as Edward contacted their slain loved ones. The segments were for possible use during the November sweeps ratings derby, which starts next week.

The rep told The TV Column that the "readings," as Edward calls them, would definitely appear on the syndicated version of the series and might also run on the cable version on the Sci-Fi channel. (In the Washington area, the show is seen in syndication on WDCA, Channel 20.) "We don't have a date yet, but we're moving forward with the shows," she said, adding that officials hoped to get them out "as soon as we can." According to the spokeswoman, New York-based Edward has been swamped with requests for readings from victims' families.

"At first we thought, we don't want to get into this; John started seeing people privately," the show rep said. When some family members actually pressed to have their contacts with the departed televised, the mother of all November sweeps stunts was born.

Great story.

But then things started happening.

Trade weekly Broadcasting & Cable slapped a story, " 'Psychic' plans WTC victims show," on the daily fax that it fired off to various news media and to station execs. The story included an interview with Rosenberg in which he promised that the segments "will be done tastefully . . . and won't be exploitative." He also noted that after Edward was contacted by so many family members, "it seemed wrong not to do it."

By midday the story had hit Drudgereport.com, which put a big picture of Barry Diller at the top of its home page, over the headline: "BARRY DILLER NETWORK TO AIR SEANCE FOR VICTIMS OF SEPT. 11." (Diller controls 74 percent of the voting power of Studios USA parent USA Networks.)

By then, Studios USA publicists were being swamped with calls from reporters. And, according to one source, the company also started hearing from some station execs that carry the show ("What the [expletive] are you thinking of?!" is how one station suit said he planned to put it).

Not long after, a spokeswoman for "Crossing Over" called The TV Column to say Rosenberg "is now saying the show isn't put together" and he's "not sure when" the segments will air; it may be "later this year or next year."

A few hours later, the whole thing was scrubbed.

But if Edward has indeed contacted deceased victims of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, how can the producers withhold from the American public the information they've obtained?
Rosenberg replied, "Our position now . . . is that these readings will probably continue to be done privately with John, and that these readings . . . will not air as part of 'Crossing Over.'
Will there be a time when it makes sense to revisit this over the course of events? Time will tell."

The resurgence of spiritualism in the US is extraordinary. And at the same time, kind of sad. Since the success of John Edward it seems every network is rushing for its version.

For your amusement...

Hi everyone, long time listener, first time caller. Seriously, been enjoying FT for so long, wanted to share this story that we posted on our website a while back--specifically, it's concerning the granite spheres in Costa Rica. And our intrepid Conspiracy reporter, T.V. Smith, has met someone who has a very strange theory as to what they might be...

For the article, "Testicles of the Gods?", give a look here:

Again, just thought we'd share some of our weirdness with others who might appreciate our sense of...whatever.

Best,
Widge

This is truly tasteless. If John Edward really possessed the ability that he claims to have, perhaps he could also get some sort of comment from those that hi-jacked the aircraft.

Thank you Widget for sharing this with us.

Moon Occults Saturn Tonight

The moon passes across Saturn tonight, 3rd Nov, for UK, France, etc, but not for the Americas or Downunder. Details here:

http://www.fedastro.freeserve.co.uk/saturn_occultation.html

Let's hope for clear skies.

If you were feeling mischeivous, you could tell someone who knows nothing of astronomy that you are going to create a new star. Around 10 o'clock or before, show them the moon and say you are going to create a new star just to the right of it (add your own mumbo jumbo, mind power, concentration, etc) and just wait...

I don't know what astrological import a conjunction of the Moon and Saturn has, but astronomically the occultation can be accurately timed and used to refine our knowledge of orbital dynamics. I'll be interested to hear any reports of observations.

Al Qaeda Takes Cues From Asimov

Johnson's Russia List

" A couple of weeks ago I asked a friend of mine, Russian writer and Afghan war veteran Vladimir Grigoriev to find out if "The Foundation", a 1951 sci-fi bestseller by Isaac Asimov, a well-known American author and scientist, was translated and published in Arabic, and if so, under what title? Yesterday, I learned that my friend contacted his former professor Olga Frolova, currently the Chair of the Arab Philology Department, School of Oriental Languages, St. Petersburg State University, and she confirmed that the book was published in Arabic as "Al Qaeda", the title matching the name of the international terrorist network founded and headed by Osama bin Laden. (The Western media usually translates "Al Qaeda" back as "The Base", as if a base of terrorists were been referred to.) " ....

Brave Beasts

From the Independant on Sundays Observatory column. 11/11/01

"To Much to Bear
A bear badly mauling an elkhunter in a Swedish forest was seen off by the man's dachshund. The Wiener sunk its teeth into the bear's private parts and did not let go until the bear fled. The hunter, Goeran Ryman, had 165 stitches."

Although my family once owned a yorkshire terrier that did the same thing to dobermans, I wonder what an elk hunter was doing with a dachshund in the forest.

Are they very small elk which hide down holes? Perhaps we should check out the cryptozoology section for sightings of these rare beasties...

sausage dogs are a very fierce little dog my nan had 3 of en and they would have fought to the death to protect her and my grandad

I have heard of them going after ground hogs,a large burrowing rodent which can be quite ferocious when attacked. They can ruin a large dog's evening and sometimes injure them severely. But then Ibelieve they were originally bred to go after badgers.

Comets the cause of civilization downfall?

[A re-thread...!]

This is a fresh(ish) approach to an old story

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/comet_bronzeage_011113-1.html

It's a long article which deals with the downfall of several ancient civilizations about 2000 BC, suggesting it was caused by meteoritic bombardment from the disintegration of a large comet.

Actually Clube and Napier (professional astronomers) have written 2 books on this subject ("The Cosmic Serpent" and the "Cosmic Winter") and this only echoes earlier works like those of Velikovsky, who, although not very good on orbital dynamics, had a good grasp of ancient history , languages, religion, etc. (Am I the first person to mention Velikovsky on this Message Board?!)

PS: Thanks to Intaglio for pointing out that the original URL I gave had expired. I have deleted the original thread and am starting it afresh here!! (This also gets rid of a nasty little person addicted to tinned meats...)

Oh man, this is bad. Finding out about neutrinos could really have done a whole lot for cosmology. It's a good thing they plan to rebuild it. Though it is interesting how they never mention the price of it. It must be millions that went pop there.

damn shame. My father used to work at CERN in geneva in the 70s/80s and I've always been into particle physics, even if I don't understand it! And they were finding out about neutrinos, possibly one of the weirdest particles around, apart from tachyons that is ;)

Gordon Trodd in Kabul...

Just 4 days ago, as we liberated their city, these people peered at us through their beards and burqas. Yet today, the men's chins are clipped - and the women - oh yes the women! Their faces are back in make up. And thanks to the new figure hugging clothes I brought through in my back pack, they've rediscovered their waists and some are even refusing food aid parcels! Their daughters show the first signs of anorexia, and I have to say, there's plenty of time before that becomes a problem. Right now, it's an absolute delight. Parts of this city are now just like Amsterdam - only better.

Elsewhere, children play happily in the dust. Half an hour ago I helped an excited group skin a dead taliban fighter and turn him into a kite....

There is peace here this evening - the disagreement with my cameraman about who technically entered the city first is over - a white man's body lies feeding the first flies of winter - and I will be using a video phone from now on.

I think this Autumn we will indeed see bikinis in Kabul."

I always thought it was somebody here in the U.S. sending the anthrax letters and taking advantage of what happened on 9/11 to help cover their tracks.......I thought maybe it was a militia type group though that was sending the letters........
