Competitive Eating & Drinking: A Sport For Debased Times?

These competitive eaters, do they just go around to the places offering "eat x amount in some time and its free" and live on the free food. Do they just eat once a week or what?
Most competitive eaters purge after eating competitions and challenges, so i dont think they get much nutrients from the food.

I've seen Molly Schuyler before. She's thin and eats like a savage.
I remember many years ago they used to show 'Glutton Bowl' the olympics of competitive eating, on 'Bravo' or some other channel, the winner on numerous occasions was i rake thin little Japanese guy.

In case you've wondered about the Guinness world record for chugging a 2-liter bottle of carbonated soda, it's 18.45 seconds. Whether the inevitable belch following the feat was itself a Guinness record wasn't determined.

A 100-egg omelette in one sitting? 11,000 calories?

She fails but gets a damned sight closer than I would.

Assumed Japanese but it's wisest not to assume. Wouldn't this work out like a variation on a theme of Cool Hand Luke and the boiled eggs?

Eating that many eggs in one sitting could lead to a toxic overload.
Unless... I'm guessing that it all gets puked up at some point?

I ate about four boiled eggs one day, i spent most of the night puking, it was not pleasant day. I was a pillock for doing it.

Or Green Face Luke, as he was latterly known.

Paul Newman did not eat 50 eggs. He’s not even sure if he ate eight before throwing up.
As heroic as such an endeavor is on the silver screen, performing such a feat in the real world is far from simple. In fact, it's even been known to be deadly. According to Vice, in 2019, "Cool Hand Luke"'s egg-eating challenge cost the life of Subhash Yadav in India after he ate 41 eggs for a 2,000-rupee (approximately $28) bet. Newsweek reports that doctors concluded Yadav's death was caused by overeating, triggered by the overwhelming volume of eggs he had eaten in a short space of time.

In a similar vein to Enola's post above, I recently stumbled across the following YouTube channel 'Katina Eats Kilos', Katina being one half of a competitive eating couple.
She's only small in size but literally puts away kilos of food in one sitting. I don't know how it's physically possible.
Take a look at her page and select any video at random. There's a few from her time in the U.K where she eats meals large enough to feed a very hungry (large) family. Astounding.

I can polish off a fair bit when I'm hungry, but 6.8 kilos?

No real dogs will be eaten or harmed harmed in this competition.

Competitive eaters from around the world are gathering in West Sussex to see who can put away the most hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Major League Eating (MLE) is hosting a UK qualifying event for the first time, ahead of its annual Fourth of July "world cup" in the United States. A dozen competitors, many from the UK, will compete at Seal Bay Resort's White Horse Complex in Selsey at 15:00 BST.

MLE president Richard Shea, 54, said he was "very excited".

The event, hosted by US fast food chain Nathan's Famous, will see contestants compete to qualify for the world championships in Coney Island, New York, on 4 July 2024.

Among the UK hopefuls is Max Stanford, who Mr Shea said was an "eater of note based in London".

Joey Chestnut, from Westfield, Indiana, currently holds the world record of 76 hot dogs and buns eaten in 10 minutes and earned his 16th title in July.

Miki Sudo, from Port Richey, Florida, is the nine-time female champion, with an all-time best of 48.5 hot dogs and buns eaten in 10 minutes.

I don't know how it's physically possible.
I overate a couple of months back. Nothing truly substantial, not even an actual meal - including two salad baguettes; go me! :D - but I felt like death, and was actually worried about dying. That sounds far too dramatic, I know, but that's really how I felt at the time. To get to my point, finally, I too don't know how these people are attracted to this competitive eating thing.

That is horrific. 300kg is over 47 stone. Surely she couldn't even move at that weight.

And she was only 24 and she did this professionally, including eating 10kg of food in one streaming session. 22lb. The equivalent of 88 1/4 pounders (just the burgers, no buns).

This kind of thing has got out of hand. How does anyone live like that?

There is a guy on YouTube called Nicocado Avocado who began doing this (Mukbang/overeating) as a regular sized young man some years ago. He now seems to take pride in his obesity, his gluttony and food binges, often filming himself needing an oxygen mask during filming.
I feel that somewhere along the way, more than just his weight changed.
If you have the morbid curiosity to want to look, here's his channel:

It must be noted, I feel, that while mukbang (as it developed in Korea) is illustrative of at least a couple of troubling social issues, gluttony and competitive eating are not directly among them.

These extreme binge eaters are simply morons, mentally ill or click farmers and not indicative of a much more interesting phenomenon.
