"It won't stand up in court!"

The cleric was held in the town of Don Benito in the western province of Badajoz near Spain’s border with Portugal.

Police arrested the suspect in a rectory where he lived with a man described as his partner, who was also detained after police carried out a search of the property.

Viagra is said to have been found inside the rectory as well as other drugs described as ‘powerful aphrodisiacs.’

The priest, named locally as Alfonso Raul Masa Soto, was released on bail and has been ordered to sign on at a local court every fortnight.

The priest has been described locally as a ‘very popular’ man.

I'm not surprised that he's "popular", if he can supply that well-known "antibiotic" mycoxafloppin.

Not a good idea to continue lying to state bodies while your trial is ongoing.

A former pastor who engaged in theft and fraud to steal more than €125,000 from his own Kildare-based church has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison.

Ebenezer Oduntan, a former pastor of the City of David Church in Naas, Co Kildare, was convicted of 87 charges of a range of theft and fraud offences following a three-week trial at Naas Circuit Criminal Court last month.

The church, which has been based in Naas Enterprise Park, Naas, Co Kildare since 2015, is a branch of the Nigerian-based Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Oduntan (58), a married father of four, of Curragh Grange, Newbridge, Co Kildare, had pleaded his innocence in relation to a total of 54 separate charges but admitted his guilt on 19 counts of theft, five counts of deception and nine charges of providing false information to the Companies Registration Office midway through his trial.

Florida priest is arrested after biting woman in bizarre fight over communion

Father Fidel Rodriguez, a parochial vicar at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in St. Cloud was charged with battery after an unidentified woman told police she had been assaulted on May 19.

She told deputies that the accused would not give her 'the cookie' and could not understand whether it was because of her 'sexuality or attire'.

But when Father Fidel was questioned, he told deputies a different story.

The priest said that the victim allegedly first came to 10am Mass on the same day but did not do the prior steps necessary to be given the communion wafer and was denied.

[He] said that she later came again and explained that she had in fact done the necessary steps and is now accepted by God.

According to the report, Father Fidel allegedly became upset with her claims and tried to ram a 'cookie' into her mouth.

In response, the woman tried to grab another Communion wafer that he was holding, but he grabbed her and bit her arm, police said.

The affidavit states that Father Fidel was trying to protect the communion wafers as it is considered the the body of Christ in Catholicism.

'Father Fidel advised that the woman pushed him and would not let go of the communion tray and the only way he thought to extract her from it was to bite her arm.'

I kept the wafer I was given at my Godson's christening and varnished it so I can give it to him when he's older. Also a bottle of the water he was dipped in. If I get any crap from vampires before that, that water's being put in water pistols.

A great childhood friend of mine entered the clergy, became quite famous and was made a Bishop. Recently been "defrocked" for unspecified reasons, conduct unbecoming etc. Sad really.

How a ‘Reverend CEO’ allegedly stole $1 billion in a crypto scam

Cynthia Petion claimed the idea to start a crypto investing platform came to her while she was brushing her teeth one morning, like a “vision from God.”

So she formed NovaTechFX in 2019 and declared herself “Reverend CEO,” pitching her service to churchgoing members of America’s Haitian community, promising returns of up to 200% within a year.

Interview-with-Cynthia-Petion.jpg

Over the next three years, investigators say Petion and her husband, Eddy, brought in $1 billion worth of cryptocurrency investments. But it was all a scam — a smoothly-run Ponzi scheme that targeted tens of thousands of investors, mostly poor immigrants, said New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Then in 2022, as the scheme was about to collapse, the Petions quietly sold their Florida home and moved to Panama. Soon after, NovaTechFX collapsed, James said.

On Thursday, James filed a lawsuit against the Petions and NovaTech’s top executives, seeking to recover the money that was lost and to bar them from ever selling investments in New York state ever again.

There's a BBC programme about this disgraceful business. I've just heard it. Made my blood boil.

Hindley was 'known' to abuse boys and youths and Church risk assessments supported these suspicions.
At that point this was a police matter, not an opportunity for a Church whitewash.

Priest thought to pose risk to children is paid off

The Church of England made a six-figure pay-off to a priest assessed as a potential risk to children and young people, a BBC investigation has found.

Canon Andrew Hindley - who worked in Blackburn diocese from 1991 to 2021 - was subject to five police investigations, including into allegations of sexual assault.

He has never been charged with any criminal offences and says he has never presented any safeguarding risk to anyone.

A senior member of staff at Blackburn Cathedral resigned over the settlement and says concerns about the priest were “an open secret” among senior clergy.

I don't know what 'safeguarding' actually consists of but, depressingly (perhaps), whenever the subject's brought up by the clerical staff at my church they roll their eyes as if it's a great inconvenience or unnecessary or both...which, considering all the Catholic Church scandals over the decades, would to me be an astonishing reaction of theirs to say the least. So I hope I've just misunderstood what safeguarding is about.

That's intriguing. Do they really find the subject so tiresome?

Have to say that I never let clergy of any description near my own children.

It wasn't suspicion that abuse would occur, just the knowledge that children are told that there is an authority higher than their own parents which clergy represent.
That's a nope from me. I was the boss.

or it could be that they are embarrassed by the need to speak about it? Shame at sexual/power discussion, shame at a place they love needing this?

is clerical staff the clergy? or the administrators?

Do they really find the subject so tiresome?

I'm guessing but the impression I got was that they think the whole thing is unnecessary - it so happens that this church has never been the subject of scandal; a reaction which I think is short-sighted (Understatement of the Century there).

Sorry for my lack of clarity, as I'm ignorant about the official roles or titles - I was referring to non-priests (though not lay-people), and also a couple of nuns, who reacted the way I described.

EDIT: I mean that these people work for the church/Church but aren't actually priests.

it's a fine way to describe those people - just possibly ambiguous in this situation. :twothumbs:

Good words well spoken.

Things could still change. Many children and youngsters don't disclose abuse for years or even decades.
Your smug friends might have a shock one day; abusers groom adults too.

Can remember a relation, a former very respectable and experienced Scout leader, telling me how a fellow leader had been abusing young boys on a Scout camp. It was happening in the next tent to Relation's.

Relation knew this man very well and trusted him, and was shocked and heartbroken when it all came out.
