Or maybe it's from anxiety? You smell unpleasant smells, not pleasant smells, which you might associate with, well, pleasure.I am waking up in the night quite frequently (see my thread about Vivid Dreams...) and when I do it's almost as though my sense of smell is in overdrive. But it's not a 'real' thing, if you see what I mean, it's an 'imagined' thing. For example, my dog has a habit of..err...well, sometimes she can't wait until morning, put it that way, and she'll do it on the landing outside my bedroom. And I often wake up convinced I can smell it. Even though I can't, and there's nothing there.

So it must be something to do with my sleeping brain. But the smells are always in context, I never smell coffee or chocolate or anything else that is unlikely to be in my room.
Sheesh! 4 in the morning is now an adjunct of 3 in the morning . . .
