Stoned Man Feeds Schoolgirl to Sharks

Man threw schoolgirl to feeding sharks 'for a joke'

Northern Territory News
A man has admitted throwing a 12-year-old girl into water where sharks were feeding as a joke.

Craig Rattigan picked her up and threw her over a safety chain as she catapulted bait to the sharks in Australia.

Nhulunbuy Magistrates' Court heard she escaped injury and was eventually rescued by her mother.

Rattigan, 41, has been sentenced to 120 hours community service after apologising to his victim.

The Northern Territory News reports he blamed his bizarre behaviour on the fact he had spent the day drinking beer and smoking cannabis.

Magistrate, David Loadman, told him: "I just don't understand how you could put a child in the water among feeding sharks.

"There was probably no chance of her being ripped to shreds, but she could have suffered extensive superficial injuries, and would have been frightened out of her wits."

The girl was in a swimsuit throwing bait to the black-tipped reef sharks, which measure between 30 and 60cms, when Rattigan crept up behind her.

Defence lawyer, Helen Spowart, said: "He had been drinking beer all day and impulsively thought it was going to be funny to throw the girl in the water. He has realised since it was not funny and is deeply sorry."

when I used to do it all I could bring myself to do was make toste.

Maybe the paople standing around should have thrown the stoned man into the shark infested waters. No matter how stoned how is endangering another person funny. What is he going to do next throw a baby into oncoming traffic for kicks?

Let's see Steve and Terri Irwin defend this one.

There was a case a few years ago where a guy jumped into a car at the gass pump and pushed a kid out, but the kid's shirt got caught in the door. He dragged the kid down the highway. The people at the station were so outraged they chased the guy down and beat the crap out of him. I think he was glad to be arrested. I am suprised something similar didn't happen in this situation.

He didn't do it because he was toned he did it because he's a nasty bastard.

Very true, sounds like a man in desperate need of a beating. I will volunteer who's with me?

well I'd normaly say that I'm a pasifist and we shouldn't take the law into our own hands but...I've got a can of whipass if you have...

Other than a few fights I had with my sis growing up I have never been in a physical altercation. I am a verbal person and tend to like talking things out. But in this situation I think exceptions should be made. As this person is clearly to stupid to be reasoned with.

Forget stupid he just seems wilfully cruel.

But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt: perhaps he has mental health problems, serious drug abuse problems? The story could be more complex than meets the eye.

(Damn i hate being reasonable - SEE! I said it before I'd love to be a bitch but I'm just to nice :()

Doesn't excuse his behavior. But then many people are just stupid and act before thinking things through and considering consequences of their actions. I am sure he will be charged with reckless endangerment of a minor and assault at the very least.

one would asume so.

I didn't intend to excuse his behaviour but to explain it.

I don't know why being drunk or stoned is seen as a defence, so maybe you've killed a few inhibitions but you're not going to do anything that you wouldn't have wanted to do anyway.

Also can't help wondering if he'd have done that if the girl's father had been around (he's unmentioned in the report, so presumably absent?), I'd have thought that would pretty much have been an automatic tw*tting for that one.

I do hope that the girl is getting some proper support after this, I mean, having some total stranger throw you in with sharks is going to mess your head up more than a little.

I'm not condoning this man's behaviour but... these sharks were between 30cm and 60cm, not quite in 'Jaws' league. But it would still have been scary for the girl.

I have to admit..I am mystified at the light sentence...

I have never understood why attempted murderers, for example, are given lighter penalties than successful ones. Basically, the only difference is their ineptitude or bad luck -- but for either, they would have SUCCEEDED. They are every bit as dangerous, every bit as twisted or warped, as a successful murderer.

Similarly here...whether this guy was drunk, stoned, drunk AND stoned, drunk, stoned and stupid...i really don't care -- if he is the sort who would have this kind of idea, then he deserves to get a LOT more than a slap on the wrist. The girl escaped physcial injury in no thanks to him, and the MENTAL trauma inflicted seems, to me, much akin to torture. If that girl had been my daughter..well..lets just say I find that notion scary, because I think I would be locked up now.

Just venting....carry on!

In my ( ahem!) extensive experience in these matters, only the alcohol would give you the ability to act like a brainless twat, being stoned tends to make you overly cautious. The whole drunk/stoned thing sounds iffy in its self, more like a weak stab at an excuse from his defense attorney than any real influence over his self-control.
As anyone whos been both drunk and stoned will attest, he'd be more likely to throw up than throw someone over a fence.

A random thought off the top of it, but I've noticed a strange double-standard in the way courts deal with the actions of intoxicated persons.
If you are intoxicated, get behind the wheel of a car, and run someone over, you're seen to be an irresponsible arsehole who gets everything they deserve.
If you are intoxicated and you do something else that results in harm to another, you are seen as less accountable for your actions at the time and as having a 'problem'.
Even though the latter is 'deliberate' harm, and the former just downright stupidity, they don't seem to be dealt with in the same way.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I think the guys defense decided to use the drunk/stoned excuse. It is the judges fault for not taking this more seriously!

If this "excuse" was used to justify a crime then I'd add a punishment for being drunk/stoned as well as attempted murder, manslaughter whatever. I'd point out it was an added crime and not an extenuation!

Then people would use the excuse less and be more damn careful about getting pissed then climbing into a car etc.

This kind of thing get's me really angry!

Marijuana Smoker Beheads Two Women

Fri Sep 24,12:39 PM ET

Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

BLANTYRE, Malawi (Reuters) - A Malawian man believed to be high on marijuana beheaded two women with an axe Friday, police in the southern African country said.

The man, in his mid-20s, beheaded a 52-year-old woman while she worked in her garden with her daughter and did the same to a 68-year-old friend who came to the daughter's aid, police spokesman Kelvin Maigwa told Reuters.

"The unsuspecting woman greeted the stranger who, instead, threw the axe at her, aiming at the chest," Maigwa said.

He said police found marijuana, or hemp, when they searched the suspect's home.

"The house was full of stench from recently smoked hemp. We believe he had an overdose of the hemp that made him go berserk," Maigwa said, adding that the walls of the house bore quotations from famous reggae songs.

Police have launched a manhunt for the killer, who fled into the bush after the attacks.

27 September 2004

A 28-year-old man spent time in a police cell yesterday, after he was discovered naked on the roof of a South Dunedin building.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the man appeared to be affected by the hallucinogenic drug datura and his bizarre behaviour continued once at the police station.

"He believed he was a pirate at sea and was using a rolled up magazine as a telescope."

The man was charged with disorderly behaviour.

Such crap. There'll be no end of idiots saying 'See? Drugs are bad for you!'.
I expect this guy was completely normal and not psychotic in the slightest before the evil weed made him do this.

'Pirate' in hospital after ingesting garden plant

28 September 2004

A man who believed he was a pirate at sea when he was actually a prisoner in the Dunedin police cells has been admitted to Dunedin Hospital after his drug-induced pyschosis failed to wear off.

The man was found naked on the roof of a South Dunedin building at 10am on Sunday and taken to the Dunedin Police Station.

Police inquiries have revealed that on Saturday the man drank the juice of a garden plant, a substance which is a Class A drug, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

While in custody he appeared to believe he was a pirate at sea and was using a rolled-up magazine as a telescope.

Twenty-four hours later, 48 hours after taking the substance, the man was still heavily affected by the drug.

"He was exhibiting quite bizarre behaviour overnight. He appeared quite agitated and excited."

A medical team was called to the station to examine the man and a decision was made to admit him to Dunedin Hospital.

"There are concerns among the medical experts that these types of substances can cause permanent or semi-permanent psychosis," Mr Aitken said.

He urged other people to learn from the man's misfortunes.

"If he thought he was a bird rather than a pirate when he was on that roof the consequences could have been disastrous."

The man was due to appear in Dunedin District Court this week charged with disorderly behaviour, but that date would be reassessed.

National Poison Centre specialist Lisa Matthews said ingesting a plant containing the toxin mescaline - the active ingredient in some common garden plants - was like playing "Russian roulette".

"You are not going to know how much the dose is or how you will respond to it and these sorts of psychosis-induced disorders can occur with small amounts the first time it is taken," she said

The man in hospital was an extreme case and might be suffering from post-hallucinogen perception disorder, which included perception changes, anxiety, panic, phobias and depression.

"Doctors will be able to determine if it is the effects of the drug or one of the long-term effects," Ms Matthews said.

Other chronic effects were prolonged psychotic reactions, similar to schizophrenia, and flashbacks which had been reported to happen up to 10 times a day, most common after 18 months after use.

Just checking "Plants of the Gods" and datura is awfully widespread and commonly used - the first pages of the book have a picture of Shiva with Datura blossoms woven into her hair and the creative and destructive aspects of her are reflected in the drug. Its commonly used in the Americas, Africa and Asia.

I wonder what went on here - I would have thought you'd have to ingest a lot of LSD to die:

Lincoln Man Held In Idaho Death

Student says he gave friend LSD

A North Idaho College student from Lincoln faces possible manslaughter charges in the death of a friend from an apparent LSD overdose.

Coeur D'Alene police spokeswoman Christie Wood said prosecutors likely would file manslaughter charges Monday against 18-year-old Cameron Jesters of Lincoln. Eighteen-year-old Gloria Discerni of Cottage Grove, Oregon, who died Friday, had been in a coma since Tuesday night after willingly drinking orange juice spiked with the hallucinogenic drug. "It's up to the prosecutors what level of manslaughter, voluntary or involuntary," said police Lt. Don Jiran.

Jesters, who was arrested Wednesday when he tried to visit Discerni in the hospital, is being held under suicide watch at the Kootenai County jail on 0,000 bail. He was originally charged with felony distribution of LSD and misdemeanor possession of psilocybin mushrooms. Records show Jesters told investigators he gave the woman a dozen doses of the hallucinogen in a drink and then let her have some of his drink, which also had a dozen doses. She quickly became ill and friends took her to the hospital.

Police are awaiting toxicology results to determine if the drug was actually LSD or if Discerni had taken any medications or had any other medical conditions which might have contributed to her death.
