Not since that famous French revolutionary painting of Mary Anne storming the barracades has a single tit caused such a ruckus (Quotation from Woody Allen's "Everything you always wanted to know about Sex*": "They usually hunt in pairs.")

Well, when I say a single tit, I mean a breast, not a Boob. Plenty of those have caused some major brou-ha-ha's in the last 200 years.

Here is proof of the ruckus part:

But where is the conspiracy angle?

Well, she is the sister of Michael Jackson who is going to trial (again) for molesting boys.

Conspiracy One.

Then there is the United States Budget ($2.4 trillion dollars, over $550 of it big-deficit spending--cuts to everything except War and Policing).

Conspiracy Two.

And the Canadian Budget, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Conspiracy Three.

Do you think the timing was coincidental?

No, seriously. "Cherchez la femme!" as they always say in muckraking and genealogy.

Europeans must be puzzled at the reaction, but a nice conspiracy theory always explains every over-reaction or silence, so I leave this to you:

North America is governed by boobs.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

With all the furor over the breast baring, it seems that everyone has ignored the jewlery aspect. I think it's some sort of illuminati symbol.

I'm not sure of the conspiracy angle - like Kylie I suspect she is trying to liven up a faltering career by appearing with Mr. Trousersnake (see also Madonna and Brittney kissing) but lets see where it goes ;)

Here is a close up of the piercing (not work safe if it din't need saying):

If I were in charge of putting on the Superbowl halftime show, and the best I'd been able to get was Janet Jackson and a generic 90s 'band boy', I'd probably try to stage a diversion too. If there's a conspiracy here, it's a very petty one.

Masonic surely?

ol don...didnt they have the Laugerie bowl at half time?...

That has to be the most frightening nipple ring in the world. Looks like something to do with Louis XIV.

At least she wasn't singing the 'Star spangled Banner'...

I must admit seeing parallels between JJ's nip ring and a borg implant :goof:

She's probably mostly plastic as well. Doesn't she share her Bro's surgeon?

Ye Gods, do none of you recognise a Discordian Prophecy come to pass. Malaclapse the Younger's last revelation before walking into the setting sun.

There Shall Come A Time When The Sun Shall Rise In The West

Although I can't remember the significance...

The sun bit is held in place by a dumbell shaped piece that goes thru the nipple.

The Internet is afester with closups... God's Teeth it must have pulled

Well, at least we can now be reasonably sure that Janet and Michael are two separate and distinct people...

Unless, that was what this was all set up to make us believe?

The funny part was...

I saw a clip of her, apologizing to both MTV and CBS.

Why didn't she just save some time and one give ONE apology to Viacom?

Trace Mann

Two apologies, twice the publicity.

I think that Michael and Latoya are closer to one entity than Janet. I think that family has fueled the plastic surgery industry for at least the last two decades.

Good shot!

Some people think they are one and the same (CORRECTION: oops! I should have read on--it is Latoya I am thinking of! Thanks for the memory jog!), presumably with and without her Phantom of the Opera make-up. But seriously, I think you must be thinking of the Osmond family. They were produced the Stepford Aerodynamics Robotics Division factory, South Park, Colorado.

Not everybody knows that.

On a morning journey into work on the tube, several not-exactly-highbrow newspapers were being read by fellow lemmings ... er ... travellers. There was a fairly tame picture of some clone-gal with her tit out with a clone-guy. Only on listening to the radio did I hear the "Earth shattering" news - Justin Timberlake (after warning everyone he was going to shock the Superbowl) exposed the very elaborately peirced nipple of Janet Jackson.

Ho hum.

It happened on prime-time tv, during the day, on a Sunday. I can see why the vocal (but perhaps religiously devout) minority might shout about their children seeing a womans breast. Not exactly tasteful was it?

Now, there might be a good chat here about some hypocracy regarding a thriving porn industry versus a sudden breast revealment (SBR since Forteans like acronyms), there might be a worthy discussion involving the question "What Is Pornography?". At a real stretch, I can imagine conspiracy-nutters swarming from their tinfoil-lined nests and decrying racism / media control / JFK links ... but that would be a tad silly.

So ...

Janet Jackson (who recently came out to support her eccentric brother over his child abuse charges) has taken part in a quite pathetic publicity stunt. That this will fuel the Anti-Jacko parties (after all, they'll say, how can she judge moral probity?) is a bit of a back-fire in the Jackson PR machine.

Justin Timberlake, who's making quite a stir among the female population (regardless of his artistic ability), is trying to get "a bit raunchy" ... in the same way Kylie started dressing to get rid of her "good girl" image. It's all hype and image. Both Justin and Kylie might be attractive but, being celebrities, they must go that little bit further. Just like Madonna and her famous sexually-explicit pictures in her book. How's she going to explain that one to her daughter ....?

It was a publicity stunt. They upset some people (rightly or wrongly). They immediately apologised. They got shit-loads of publicity worldwide. Mission accomplished. Get over it, people. You can spend hours surfing for celebrities "private parts" but will you get your hands/tongue/baby oil on them? No. So why waste neuron-energy on it?

Sorry, Janet, but to have that bar-bell put in to support the nipple shield was an own-goal. How many body peircers in L.A. are going to claim responsiblilty. Nice-looking tit but over-exposed!

side bar... Justin Timberlake... I've seen any number of his videos but, a capella, would be hard pressed to know what he sounds like.

NOTE: I thought similar things about popular singers when I was 18. I was born old....

Sometimes the difficult part of being an American is trying to tell when the Puritanism is real or hypocrisy.

But the really burning question in my mind is when The Sun has a couple of young, aggressive, investigative reporters probe *Nipplegate*, who will be their Deep Throat? :eek!!!!:  :blah:

How can The USA get so upset over one bare breast ( Not really bare either with a nipple covered by that Sherifs badge!) The whole country is awash in Pornography (Unless things have changed dramatically recently). Poor kids can't help bumping into alot worse on the internet given a few minutes. What a load of Hypocritical media they have.

The incident, it's surrounding publicity and hoopla is just
another in a long series of events here that are really
a very simply explained phenomena.

It has become cool here to do what is bad for you, to the
extent that the media has simply abandoned any pretense
of caring or wondering if any line is being crossed, if the
culture is passing a point it will be hard to come back from,
or if anyone who may be a popular opinion leader may disagree.

When I was in high school and college here, a small percentage
of people were into alternative music, fashion and interests.

The majority branded these people as being very weird and
bad.

Twenty some years later, the majority likes weirdness in music,
fashion and ideas.

In America, the vast middle class of conservative thought and
blind devotion to conformity has switched allegiance, and now
marches arm and arm with the ideas and urges it fought to
stop for many years.

No thought is going into this, it is just a rush toward anything
that feels good, is easy, and represents no spiritual, intellectual
or healthful cause.

Recently here a woman released a porn video of herself on the net in order to get people to tune in to her reality tv show.
They did, and it has led to her appearing in tv dramas, her actual
goal. She is becoming famous for doing anything to become famous. Nothing new, except it is suddenly and largely thought
of here as "Well done to her."

When I was a kid "Spanish Fly" was a joke in the back of a dirty
magazine, a thing to lose your money one.

Now a former US Senator pitches Viagra on tv.

Last night, I saw a US news report detailing how much media
coverage the Janet Jackson incident has gotten. When they went to commecial, the commercial was for the generic replacement for Viagra, which, it was loudly explained to the viewer, lasts for 36 hours. The ad showed elderly people becoming friendly with one another. When your body is slowing down and you are getting older..........is the right thing to do to take a pill that will let you have sex for a day and a half straight?

The rest of the world says it sees the US as an odd place, at once pornographic and chaste, and that must be so, even if the balance is now shifting for good toward the former.

But I see the US as becoming really a place that will have to fight it's own demons in order to ever help the rest of the world again.

I am afraid that what the US has started bringing to the world is something that it won't be able to resist, the culture of US Junior High School and High School. Really the current change in behaviour of people in the US from 40-80 years old, a rush to a much more hedonistic or primitive way of life, is the result of older people dropping moral and ethical codes or behaviours that they previously went along with..........but at heart must have not felt too happy about complying with.

Why has this happened? In my view, two reasons.

1. The amount of "legal" and illegal drug use in America is astounding. In some school districts a full 10% of children on Ritalin or similar drugs.

2. The concept of Right and Wrong has been replaced by the concept of pills (material objects), doing our thinking and living for us. The places and writings where we got the concepts for right and wrong have been attacked until they are now for the most part gone.

The saddest result of the turning of man, the beautiful if troubled combination of flesh, intellect, and spirit...godliness....what have you: THAT WE HAVE GROWN TO LOVE THE MATTER AND FORCE THAT TRAPS US MORE THAN THE IDEA OF FREEDOM FROM IT.

That is my view of it. I am hoping that all cultures will rise up to the heights they were intended to rise to, rather than sink any lower into the muck.

I was thinking about this problem, only the other day.

It's not just rampant materialism, moral relativism and being encouraged to the extremes of hedonistic self indulgence, it's the fact that by being encouraged to gratify our immediate needs with pap and pablum, all the time, we are in danger of being infantilised and suspended in a perpetually dependent state, not even like addicts, or junkies, but more like the pampered and spoiled household pets, of our political masters and their shadowy backers, the mega corporations.

Never allowed to grow up and encouraged to wet our diapers, every time the babysitter tells us more scary stories about the bogeyman.

Sound familiar?

Note: Must try to sound less like David Icke, in future!

Oi! Foucault! No!

So, thinking about it, the woman's breast, as a symbol for infantile sustenance, made un-suckle-able with spikes and pinned as a blatant object of sado masochistic sexual fetish and perversion, is actually a deeply subversive image. A symbol of the controlling and suffocating nature of the Consumerist Society of the Spectacle (in which we are really nothing but force fed and otherwise impotent onlookers and voyeurs), which promises everything and delivers only pain.

No wonder people were shocked! Janet and Justin neatly summed up the whole entirety of Modern Western Cultural Decadence with one flash of tit in the mass arena of hot dogs, coke and Spectator Sport.

I have to admit, I'm deeply impressed.

Oooh crikey have a butchers at this....

Janet's breast makes net history

Janet Jackson's breast has become the most searched-for image in net history.

Search engines reported a big jump in searches for terms such as Janet Jackson and Super Bowl, as people turn to the web for images of the event.

The maker of digital video recorders, Tivo, said it was also one of the most watched moments in US TV history, as people paused and replayed the event.

Jackson's right breast was seen by millions on TV after Justin Timberlake pulled at her bodice during a duet.

Bigger than Britney

Search engine Lycos said the brief flash of flesh had become the most searched for event in its history, even beating searches for 11 September.

"On Monday, Janet Jackson and the half-time show received 60 times as many searches as the Paris Hilton sex tape and 80 times as many searches as Britney Spears," said Aaron Schatz, who compiles a daily list of top search phrases for Lycos.

"Prior to this week, the most-searched event in the history of The Lycos 50 over a one-day period was the September 11 attack on America," he added.

"Jackson's half-time exposure also far surpasses the other top stories we've tracked on The Lycos 50."

Other search engines also reported an explosion in interest in the American singer.

People using Google searched for "Janet Jackson" almost 10 times more the day after the game than they did on Sunday, said the company.

And by Wednesday Jackson broke records on Yahoo, accounting for nearly 20% of all terms searched on the site.

Singer Justin Timberlake tore off part of Jackson's black leather bustier during the Super Bowl performance, exposing one bare breast to almost 100 million television viewers..

The Super Bowl flash has caused outrage in some quarters in the US, with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Michael Powell describing it as a "classless, crass and deplorable stunt".

The FCC, the main government media watchdog, has announced an inquiry to see whether the display of flesh constituted indecency.

I'm so sick of the bullshit moralizing the press is doing over here about this. All I hear is 'What about the children!!?!?!?', 'How could they show this during the 'family hour'?' It's not like the "children" have never seen their dad throw his beer at the tv and scream 'I HOPE U GET CANCER!!!!' at the quarterback because he failed to cover the spread.

:D

Americans are made out to seem like they are beside themselves with anguish over this event, they are not, truth is it's no big deal.
Its just another media story about the media getting out of hand.

IMHO this may not be the best example but it shows once again why Americans think they are the center of the world. Once again the story around the world is about America, and it did not even have to be a particularly big or important story, nonetheless if there is a story in the news about Americans suffering embarrassment ears and eyes perk up around the world putting the US culture in the spotlight. And people wonder why the US thinks so much about itself, it’s because the world media verifies it through events like this.

NBC Excises 'ER' Breast Scene

Thu February 5, 2004 02:26 AM ET

By Nellie Andreeva

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Days after Janet Jackson shocked the nation by baring her breast during the Super Bowl, NBC has agreed to edit out a brief shot of an 80-year-old woman's breast from Thursday night's episode of medical drama "ER" -- to the chagrin of the show's executive producer.

In the scene, the breast is visible for less than two seconds in the background of a scene where doctors are giving the woman emergency care. The network's decision to adjust the scene to obscure the bare breast drew a strong rebuke from "ER" executive producer John Wells, who said it sent a bad message.

NBC's decision was finalized late Tuesday, two days after the Super Bowl halftime stunner in which Jackson bared her breast during a performance with Justin Timberlake. The incident has spurred a national debate about indecency on television and triggered an investigation by the FCC.

"In consultation with our affiliate board we have asked 'ER' to remove a shot of an exposed breast of an 80-year-old woman receiving emergency care," NBC said. "Though we continue to believe the shot is appropriate and in context, and would have aired after 10:30 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time, we have unfortunately concluded that the atmosphere created by this week's events has made it too difficult for many of our affiliates to air this shot."

While the final decision on the "ER" shot came a few days after the Jackson incident, Roger Ogden, general manager of NBC affiliate KUSA-TV in Denver and chairman of the NBC affiliate board, said that affiliates had been concerned about the propriety of the scene for several weeks. NBC executives first showed the scene in question to the affiliate board during a meeting at NATPE in Las Vegas last month.

"In looking at it myself, it wasn't something that ... felt totally out of context. It was very brief and it wasn't something that would've shocked you if you're watching the show as a normal person," Ogden said.

Nevertheless, after a number of affiliates raised serious concerns, Ogden said the affiliate board notified NBC early this week that "we thought it wasn't in the best interest of the network or the affiliates to include the shot," Ogden said.

"ER" executive producer Wells said his objection to editing the breast out of the shot came out of concern about artistic freedom rather than the specifics of that particular scene.

"It's really not about this," Wells said. "We could've easily cut the small piece of the breast and it does no damage to the show whatsoever. But the chilling effect of having this one incident now affect programming content across all the networks, that's what I'm concerned about."

Wells added that he felt a certain obligation as the steward of a hit network show to take a stand on the matter.

"It makes you ask those questions about other things that might be perceived to be controversial," Wells said. "Should you talk about sexually transmitted disease among teenagers? Should you be dealing with certain types of violence and the effects of that violence? And while on a show like 'ER,' where we have the success to not bow to too much of that pressure, (for) pilots and newer shows that don't feel as confident in their future, it will be very difficult for them to stand up to questions from the studio or their network about them."
