Watergate and the identity of Deep Throat

You mean it wasn't Liddy bragging?

They may have to wait some time for verification. From memory only four people know for sure who Deep Throat was, and three of them are sworn to secrecy. Whether Deep Throat is ready to come out at this point isn't clear. He may want to wait until more of the others involved are dead.

The last speculation I heard on this topic was that it was one of Haig's aides, based on similar, though possibly less thorough, examination of the facts.

Three can keep a secret, as long as two are dead.
If anyone knows the identity of Deep Throat, it'll come out sooner or later, a deathbed confession, a reference in a memoir, a message from Doris Stokes.

Woodward and Bernstein's editor (one of the three) has said he will reveal who it was if either Deep Throat dies, or he gives consent to his name being released. As he hasn't done so yet, it would seem neither has happened.

Do the american secret service/ government keep a simmilar practice to that employed in britain, where by all official top secret documents are released after 50 years?
Of course unofficial top secret documents are never released ;)

In britain this has led to the full story of the invention of the worlds first computer being invented at blechly park during world war 2 and the secret services plans to assasinate hitler (abandoned because they realised if they did this he would become a matyr makeing the war potentially harder to win) and the story about the stage majician that worked with the british government to make fake tanks to fool german spies into thinking the desert rats had a massive tank armada so they didn't attack.

Y'know, I had entirely different ideas about what this thread would be about...

so did i... i wana know was the film named after the informer or visa versa....

i saw some sort of American satirical show years ago and the voice and manerisums of "deepthroat" left no doubts that they were saying it was Henry Kissinger.. i have not a clue weather this is even posible/relivant or likely.. but i thought Linda Lovelace played it better in the film

I believe the film was created before the informant was named.

Yeah, I thought it would be a strange deaths type thing. Like that poor woman who supposedly drowned while performing felatio on her boyfirend in the surf.

Cujo

Film first, then informant.

Government info can get tied up fforever. Look at the JFK papers that aren't being released until 2038.

Actuly the powers that be in usa claim to have now relesed all their jfk murder investigation documents in order to stop conspiricy theorists going on about it... of course you have to take their word for it that these are the origional documents ;)

the video of Kal Koff's jfk lecture at the un-convention will probably be availible through an ad in ft soon and I realy recomend it.

Bush as Deep Throat? Author: Former prez was secret source behind Watergate

By Stephanie Schorow
Saturday, February 5, 2005

A new theory about Deep Throat, the most mysterious figure in American political history, has been posted on a media Web site.

Could former President George H.W. Bush be the elusive source who brought down President Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandal by leaking key information to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward?

That's the opinion of Adrian Havill, the author of a 1993 biography ``Deep Truth'' on reporters Woodward and Carl Bernstein.

Havill, a Virginia-based writer, previously had concluded the unnamed Watergate source was not one person but a composite. Now, after new research, he posted a note on the Romenesko site of the Poynter Institute (www.poynter.org) targeting the elder Bush as Woodward's unnamed contact.

Havill said he began to suspect Bush when his president son, who dislikes the press, gave Woodward an unusual seven hours of interviews.

Also:
The elder Bush had motivation to dislike Nixon, who had urged him to leave a safe congressional seat for an assistant Secretary of Treasury position and hinted he would replace Spiro Agnew on the 1972 ticket. Nixon reneged, and Bush ``was given the thankless task of heading the Republican National Committee in 1973,'' Havill said.
Bush was United Nations ambassador in New York from 1971 to 1973 but came to his Washington home on weekends. Seven of the eight Deep Throat/Woodward meetings were on weekends.
Bush, who later became CIA director, had intimate knowledge of Washington. ``This is a guy with deep political contacts from way back,'' Havill said.
Both Woodward and Bush are Navy men and Yale graduates.

Woodward has said he will reveal Deep Throat's identity only when the source is dead. Bush may not want to come forward because the revelation he took down Nixon would make the entire Bush clan the ``black sheep'' of the GOP, Havill said. A call to a Bush spokesman at his presidential library in Houston was not returned.

Havill posted his theory after Watergate notes from the two reporters, sold in 2003 for $5 million to the University of Texas, went on display - minus Deep Throat's identity.

Now THAT'S what I call a call a conspiracy theory. :wow:

Deep Throat ‘gravely ill’

I have never understood the fascination with the actual identity of Deep Throat. I keep thinking it’s going to be some hotel bellhop or something, thus completely taking the fun out of the actual revealing, which is supposedly promised when ‘Throat passes away. Remember Al Capone’s vault?

Deep Throat is supposedly “gravely ill“:

We’ll all know one day very soon, however. Bob Woodward, a reporter on the team that covered the Watergate story, has advised his executive editor at the Washington Post that Throat is ill. And Ben Bradlee, former executive editor of the Post and one of the few people to whom Woodward confided his source’s identity, has publicly acknowledged that he has written Throat’s obituary.

(Quoting the Los Angeles Times.) Given the fact that, as the American Mind points out, Pat Buchanan has looked fine in his recent MSNBC appearances, it seems he can be eliminated as a suspect. Another suspect I think we can safely eliminate is George Bush The Elder, who has looked strong and in good health over the last couple months during his involvement with tsunami relief, including his Super Bowl appearance just last night. Bush 41 was implicated as a candidate for the “Deep Throat” tag in a recent (and ridiculous) rumor:

Bush was motivated to cooperate with Woodward, [Woodward and Bernstein biographer Adrian] Havill claims, because Nixon reneged on a promise to make Bush vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned.

Like I said, maybe it’s because I’m from a different generation, but I have very little interest in this source’s identity. I thought the FBI determined years ago it was Richard Jewell.

HOWARD HUGHES' NIXON BRIBE SPARKED W'GATE: PROBER

By NEIL GRAVES

February 25, 2005 -- In new bombshell claims, a former Watergate investigator says the break-in was motivated by President Nixon's paranoia that the Democrats would find out that he had taken a $50,000 bribe from Howard Hughes.

Terry Lenzner, revealing fresh details after more than 30 years, told "60 Minutes" that Nixon was obsessed with finding out whether Democratic National Committee boss Larry O'Brien knew that the billionaire recluse had sent him a stash of cash.

The money — delivered in a bulging envelope — was spent on a putting green and a pool table at Nixon's Florida residence, investigators believe.

"I am absolutely certain it was a significant part of the president's thinking that [finding out what the Democrats knew had] to be done," Lenzner told correspondent Lesley Stahl in a broadcast to be aired Sunday.

The bribe was delivered to Nixon crony Charles "Bebe" Rebozo, allegedly to ensure favorable treatment for Hughes' casino and airline businesses. Bagman Robert Maheu, who worked for Hughes for 17 years, saw it as a political contribution.

When O'Brien, a Hughes employee at the time of the payoff, became DNC head, alarms went off in Nixon's head. They would later go off at the sprawling Watergate apartment and office complex.

As it turned out, Nixon had no reason to be concerned, Maheu said.

"Why the hell would I tell Larry about this?" he asked.

When asked by Stahl if he believed the bribe led to Watergate, the former bagman said: "I think so."

Yes, documents are released regularly but not only do the "real" secrets not make it into official files, but a lot of stuff that is official and documented is never going to come out, for example the VP's role in Iran-Contragate. Bush Jr. covered Daddy's tracks pretty well when he assumed the presidency. Also, many documents are censored because of "personal" material--a lot of the Nixon tapes are in this class, and in any case, embarassing material is not released during the lifetime of persons who might be embarassed--and possibly during the lifetime of their immediate family.

For example, if G.W.B. was writing love letters to his gay lover, let us call him JG, full of tender little lover's secrets, such as the fact that V.P., the wife of Ambassador RW was a CIA agent, then those would probably never be released, but even if they were they wouldn't see the light during the lifetime of the Bush twins.

It is a law of bureaucracy that much material is over-classified and the important stuff goes directly into the shredder. Some of the truth will out, but only when nobody but historians care.

Hitler always gave his orders verbally--complete deniability. Bush is probably not a man of letters--he barely reads.[/i]

"New?" This was widely reported in the alternative press in the 70's...

I'm Spartacus!
Ex-FBI official says he's 'Deep Throat'
Magazine quotes him as saying he was 'doing his duty'MSNBC staff and news service reports
Updated: 12:23 p.m. ET May 31, 2005W. Mark Felt, who retired from the FBI after rising to its second most senior position, has identified himself as the "Deep Throat" source quoted by The Washington Post to break the Watergate scandal that led to President Nixon's resignation, Vanity Fair magazine said Tuesday.

"I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat," he told John D. O'Connor, the author of Vanity Fair's exclusive that appears in its July issue.

Felt, now 91 and living in Santa Rosa, Calif., reportedly gave O'Connor permission to disclose his identity.

"The Felt family cooperated fully, providing old photographs for the story and agreeing to sit for portraits," Vanity Fair stated in a press release.

Reporter won't confirm or deny
Felt said he was "only doing his duty" and did not seek to bring down Nixon over the cover-up of a break-in at Democratic Party offices in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C.

Carl Bernstein, who with Bob Woodward broke the story as Washington Post reporters, issued a statement neither denying nor confirming Felt's claim. Bernstein stated he and Woodward would be keeping their pledge to reveal the source only once that person dies.

NBC News commentator Chris Matthews, who wrote a book about Watergate, said he wasn't surprised, adding that Felt "has always been the leading suspect."

The last Felt boomlet was in 1999, when a high school senior in New York claimed that Bernstein's son let the secret slip at a summer camp.

Honor and money?
In the article, O'Connor reports that Felt's children, Joan and Mark Jr., urged him to go public after he revealed his secret to them in 2002.

Felt argued with them, O'Connor writes, saying he didn't want the story out there.

“I don’t think (being Deep Throat) was anything to be proud of,” Felt indicated to his son, Mark Jr., at one point, according to the article. “You (should) not leak information to anyone.”

But Joan is quoted as saying that "Bob Woodward's gonna get all the glory for this, but we could make at least enough money to pay some bills, like the debt I've run up for the kids' education. Let's do it for the family."

O'Connor adds that Felt finally agreed, saying "that's a good reason" even though Mark Jr. recalls him as saying "he wasn't particularly interested" in disclosing the secret.

Other names raised in past
Felt is one of a number of people who have been named over the years as the source whose disclosures helped bring down the Nixon presidency. Others include Assistant Attorney General Henry Peterson, deputy White House counsel Fred Fielding, and even ABC newswoman Diane Sawyer, who then worked in the White House press office.

In 1999, Felt denied he was the man.

“I would have done better,” Felt told The Hartford Courant. “I would have been more effective. Deep Throat didn’t exactly bring the White House crashing down, did he?”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Deep throat

Watergate's Deep Throat revealed
The Washington Post has confirmed a former deputy chief of the FBI was Deep Throat, the source who leaked secrets during the Watergate scandal.
Vanity Fair magazine had reported Mark Felt admitted being the source whose identity had been secret for decades.

The scandal forced the resignation of Republican President Richard Nixon in August 1974.

Deep Throat helped Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the Watergate affair.

Initially the reporters refused to confirm Mr Felt's identity.

"We've said all along that when the source, known as Deep Throat, dies, we will reveal his identity," said Bernstein, according to MSNBC.

But later on Tuesday, Woodward said Mr Felt was indeed Deep Throat, in a statement carried on the Washington Post's website.

"It's the last secret" of the story, said Ben Bradlee, who was the Washington Post's senior editor at the time.

Family secret

Mr Felt, now 91, told Vanity Fair: "I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat."

The name derived from a famous pornographic film of the time.

Mr Felt only admitted his secret to his family in 2002, he told the magazine, when his daughter confronted him after being tipped off by one of his close associates.

The FBI has not commented on the admission.

In the 1970s, Mr Felt was convicted of organising illegal searches of houses of radicals associated with the Weather Underground movement.

He was pardoned by President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Flowerpot man

The identity of the most famous unidentified single source in the history of journalism has also been one of the profession's best kept secrets.

Deep Throat assisted Woodward and Bernstein with prompts and hints.

If Woodward needed to meet the source to check information, he would place a flag in a flower pot on a certain place on his window sill, as a signal for the pair to meet in secret in an underground car park in the dead of night.

For decades, there had been speculation about who the source was - but no credible individual had ever come forward.

Bugging attempt

When Nixon resigned in August 1974, it was the first time any US president had done so.

The Watergate scandal concerned a break-in at the offices of the rival Democratic party in the Watergate building in Washington in 1972, and a subsequent cover-up.

The attempted bugging of the building was linked to officials in the Nixon White House, and the cover-up went all the way to the top.

The reporters' role in the affair was immortalised in the 1976 film All The President's Men.

John Dean, counsel in Nixon's White House who served four months in prison for his role in the Watergate affair, expressed surprise that Mr Felt had the opportunities to pass on the information.

"How in the world could Felt have done it alone?" said Dean, raising the question, often debated, of whether the Deep Throat informant could ever have been a single person.

I wouldn't. He got so many of his facts wrong it was heart-breaking:
http://www.btinternet.com/~dr_paul_lee/JFK.htm

So we finally know who "Deep Throat" is. My question: Where is the modern-day Deep Throat when you need one? This administration makes former President Nixon's look like a bunch of choirboys, from stealing the election in 2000 to getting us in a war in Iraq under lies and falsified information, even trying to block an investigation into the worst attack on America in our history. I won't even get into the stacked "town hall meetings," the fake reporters, and the behind-closed-door meetings with big energy companies.
W. Mark Felt was convicted for directing illegal FBI break-ins of homes and offices of suspected Weather Underground members and their families. Felt was given a pardon by President Reagan because he believed Felt acted honorably despite violating citizens' Fourth Amendment rights. If Felt were to do this today, his actions would be legal under the Patriot Act. It's making the Nixon administration seem far-sighted.
The cries of treason and betrayal of oath rise from the far right as they hide in the shadow of my once beautiful flag that now has become stained with blood and oil. Mr.Felt is no angel, but he did show that once upon a time in America, no one was above the law.
Again: Where is the modern-day Deep Throat when you need one?
Peace
=^..^=217

*I will grant that the flag has long been stained*

At least the Americans *do* something (haven't I always said this isn't a real country?!)...we're sitting on a pile of patronage, pork, and payouts...EVERYONE KNOWS...then they yawn, say "Eh, what can you do?" and go back to their barbecues. :headbutt:

I was always intrigued by John Dean's book on the current administration: Worse than Watergate. Well, I guess he'd know. Except he's probably just trying to play down his own involvement in the earlier administration by pointing to the Bush cabinet and saying "Look, they're worse than we were."

Now there's a bunch of negative "spin" directed towards Felt and his family in the US recently, mostly from neo-conservatives, who are now in positions of great power and one way to "rehabilitate" Nixon's image is by attacking this fellow. (both Cheney & Rumsfield, among others, got their start working in the Federal government as Nixon appointees.) So take that into consideration when reading about "damaging revelations" about them.

OTOH, this story about Felt's daughter and the *New Religious Movement* she seems to be involved with seems legit/straightforward enough and certainly is one of those nice cross-overs between fortean subject areas.

Deep Throat's Daughter, The Kindred Free Spirit

By Lynne Duke
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, June 12, 2005; A01

W. Mark Felt and Joan Felt are like many fathers and daughters. Their roles have been reversed by time. The 61-year-old daughter now takes care of the 91-year-old father as his health falters, his twilight deepens.

They have found familial common ground and emotional space together. A former home health aide for the elder Felt describes how he would light up with a smile while talking to his doting daughter. A friend and university colleague of the younger Felt describes how she would scramble to make sure her father had the proper care.

But as fathers and daughters are wont to be, they were estranged once upon a time, and a study in extreme contrast.

He was the FBI man, the company man hunting down and spying on radical or countercultural movements of the kind that attracted his free-spirited daughter. She lived in a commune back in the 1970s, and her father disapprovingly told her she reminded him of the radical activists his agency was chasing, according to the Vanity Fair article that revealed her father as Deep Throat.

One can easily imagine each being embarrassed by the other, so different were they then. The establishment father. The hippie daughter. And even more striking contrasts have emerged since Joan Felt became a public figure through her father's unmasking.

But who is Joan Felt? And where was she while her father was skulking in a Rosslyn parking garage confirming hunches about the Watergate scandal? Much remains unknown about this woman who has been catapulted into the national limelight at the center of the most riveting of political mysteries.

Some of what is known adds to the mystery: Joan Felt is a devotee of an unusual and controversial self-proclaimed guru who, in two California lawsuits and several public statements 20 years ago, was accused of sexual abuse, slavery, false imprisonment, assault and brainwashing that was said to include persuading people to give him all their money.

Asked about the guru today, Joan Felt says, "None of this has anything to do with the Deep Throat story." She won't talk about the guru's group, known as Adidam as well as the Johannic Daist Communion. Nor would she discuss the length and scope of her role within it. Earlier this month, when asked about it in a brief encounter outside her house, she said Adidam was like Buddhism.

Her name and home phone number are listed on the Internet as a contact for an Adidam Study Group in Santa Rosa, Calif., where she lives with her father and sons. Whether Joan Felt ever lived at any of Adidam's many communal households and sanctuaries throughout California and elsewhere is unknown.

Adidam is named for its leader, known variously as Adi Da Samraj, Bubba Free John and Da Love-Ananda, among several other names. He was born Franklin Albert Jones in New York in 1939 and founded the religion in 1972 in Los Angeles, according to news accounts of his life.

Since 1982, Adi Da has lived with several wives and his closest followers on the tiny Fiji island of Naitouba, according to defectors as well as news articles. He bought the island for $2.1 million from actor Raymond Burr, say news reports of that era.

The lawsuits and threatened suits that dogged the group in the mid-1980s were settled with payments and confidentiality agreements, says a California lawyer, Ford Greene, who handled three such cases.

The heart of the practice of Adidam is "the devotional and spiritual relationship with Adi Da Samraj," says an Adidam Web site, and "to bring one's life and body-mind into greater balance." Its purpose is "to transform every moment in life -- whether one is eating, sexing, meditating, doing business or whatever -- into Divine Communion."

It is unclear how many devotees Adidam has, though some sources estimate a few thousand. Adidam study groups and bookstores can be found in major cities around the country, including one in Bethesda, where several phone calls went unanswered and where no one could be found yesterday. Messages left at Adidam's main ashram in Fiji, as well as its main stateside sanctuary in Middletown, Calif., and an office in San Rafael, Calif., were not returned.

Steve Hassan, a licensed mental health counselor and a Boston-based cult expert for nearly 30 years, says Adidam fits the classic cult model. "I have counseled victims of this man," says Hassan, " . . . a couple dozen over 20-plus years," including as recently as 2002.

Felt finds the questions about Adidam troubling. Her pleasant disposition turns testy when she is pressed to discuss past allegations against the guru.

"That's all way far in the past," she says by telephone. "This is 20 years ago, 20 years ago, that you're digging up stuff."

That's pretty much the *cult* part of the article. The profile goes on quite a bit from there talking about the family, her time as hippie, etc. It can be read at the link. (registration required)

I’m actually quite surprised the Neo-Cons appear to be claiming Nixon as one of their own. He was undoubtedly as slippery as an eel and you wouldn’t have wanted to buy a used car off the man but some of his policies seem a wee bit on the liberal side.

This is the man who proposed the Family Welfare Plan which would have provided a guaranteed minimum annual income to American families. He cut down on water and air pollution and eliminated the use of dangerous pesticides - obviously at the expense of big business. He introduced legal protection for endangered species. He sided with Native Americans against the interests of white ranchers and the US Forest Service and increased funding for Native American healthcare. In a 1991 article one liberal columnist described his administration as having “accomplished more in 1970 to desegregate Southern school systems than had been done in the sixteen previous years or probably since,” On the international side of things, in a world where tensions had reached something of a peak, rather than following the “with us or against us” policy so favoured by the present administration, he opened relations with China and pursued a policy of détente with the Soviets.

I don’t want to appear to be excusing or rehabilitating Nixon - he sided with big business against the interests of others as often as he went against them, he dragged his heels over his promised withdrawal from Vietnam and undoubtedly much of his political thinking would have found favour in the present regime. But its not that black and white.

Oh, I agree completely. It is kind of curious. Politically, especially in terms of domestic government programs, he's a kind of Republican that is pretty much non-existent these days. But, you know, especially in this country where the political system is biased in favor of pragmatists and true ideologues are (or have been until very recently) quite rare in Governor/Senate/President type offices, politicians are weather vanes. Wherever the wind is coming from, that's where they'll move. Everyone wants four (or six or eight) more years. The mood of the electorate at the end of the sixties, was far, far more liberal than it is now, so yeah, in retrospect he seems more like a Democrat, in some respects.

Maybe this is to turn Watergate into a "the liberal media smearing a Republican president" thing. (and also, implicitly, about extending the concept of what are acceptable executive privlege and powers, which is something the neo-cons are all about.)

Mark Felt works for the interest of another country.

Mark Felt works for the interest of another country.

There is always a purpose for each leak. What is it this time?

It proves what I have said 3 months ago was correct: FBI did it.(Israel controls D.O.J.. D.O.J. controls FBI. And FBI keep Americans under surveillance, include Presidents.) US politicians are surveillanced and controlled by intelligence. They are extorted and intimidated. And this time, they want Bush to do something. ( I'm FBI. You see Nixon? If you do not obey, we have another "Deep throat" to reveal how you cover up the man who leaked the ID of a CIA agent) To start a war with Syria, Iran? Or follow a new road map of Israel in Mid-east?

Re: 295. Who controls D.O.J.? (3/7/05)

Former President Kennedy was assassinated. Former President Clinton was impeached. All these revealed that even in top position, US politicians are under the control of intelligence. They were under the surveillance. They were extorted, blackmailed by intelligence. If they disobeyed, then they were punished by scandal, or even been assassinated.

Former President Nixon was impeached and lost his post in oval office in early 70's. The formal reason was he lied to cover up a tape which might reveal his awareness of illegal campaign activity. But lie and dirty campaign activity were common among high ranking politicians. It was only an excuse. Then what was the real purpose?

In March 2002, a news helped me resolved several puzzles. It was a tape of Nixon's conversation with former treasury secretary Connally. Re:

Quote, "Nixon Defended Envoy's Groping
1972 Tapes Also Reveal Talk of a Justice Dept. 'Full of Jews'

By George Lardner Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 1, 2002; Page A02

"Oh! Oh, God!" Nixon said with a sigh. "It erodes our confidence, our strength. They're untrustworthy. . . . Look at the Justice Department, it's full of Jews."
"Any place of power," Connally agreed. "SEC used to be -- all of them, those lawyers."
"Listen, the lawyers in government are damn Jews," Nixon said.
Both men agreed that Nixon should try to reduce the Jewish influence in a second term. Nixon told Connally on May 15 that he wanted no more than 2 percent of the government's political appointees to be Jewish, in proportion to the population. He later said 10 percent would be acceptable, "but certainly not 30 or 40 percent."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/ar ... Feb28.html

I then knew who control Justice department and why Nixon lost his job.

Nixon realized that there was a disproportion of government political appointees to the population. He thought it was not for the interest of US and tried to change that situation. He was impeached before he could do it.

Now I know why Sharon said, "Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it." - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, to Shimon Peres, October 8th, 2001

Israel controls D.O.J.. D.O.J. controls FBI. And FBI keep Americans under surveillance, include Presidents.
