Security Search Revealed Foetus in Girl's Handbag

"Authorities are trying to determine if one girl gave birth in the store, or if she had been carrying the remains with her.

"She apparently told detectives she delivered a day earlier, but didn't know what to do with the remains . . . "

Taking it shopping was probably not the answer.

Strange case of missing Poole tree solved as council admits chopping it down
11:00am Thursday 24th October 2013

A BRANKSOME woman says it is ‘laughable’ that Borough of Poole has now admitted it cut down the tree in her garden.

Adele Copeman-King, 53, was left mystified after an 80ft Cypress Pine, believed to be more than 100 years old, was cut down in September outside her home in Wilderton Road.

Following her appearance in the Daily Echo on Saturday, Poole council has since called Adele to confirm they were responsible, despite the tree being covered by a legally enforceable area tree protection order.

She said: “I thought it had been stolen after the council said it couldn’t work out how it had happened. I was worried more of the trees would start disappearing.”

Barry Sparkes, street scene manager for Borough of Poole, said: “We made the decision to ask our contractors to cut down this tree as it was dead and overhanging the highway. The council has a legal authority to remove dangerous trees. While we must apologise to Adele Copeman-King for not informing her, we hope she understands our decision.”

And if it wasn't, it is now.

Sadly this doesn't surprise me at all. :(
And it puts the kibosh on a theory I was developing: suppose a particular style of antique was traditionally made with Sweet Chestnut wood, and a maker of fake antiques wanted a supply of the timber...?

But no, it was the Council, left hand not knowing what the right was doing.

I can't help but wondering that if the householder had decided that the tree was dead and therefore a danger to the public and asked the council to cut it down they would have either charged her a fortune or told her it was her problem.

I had similar with the grating covering my cellar window outside my old house.
The grating was in the pavement as the house had no front garden or even doorstep. When the grating broke I was told that it was my grating and therefore my problem.
However when I decided that as it was mine I was going to keep my bins on it I was told it belonged to the council.

Christopher Philips, formerly known as Darren Clifft, 23, from Willenhall, will be sentenced on 19 December.

Philips pleaded not guilty to a second charge of stirring racial hatred, which will remain on file after a request from the prosecution.

Weymouth play centre's 'fluffy' polar bear statue stolen

A "fluffy" polar bear statue has been stolen from a children's play centre in Dorset.
The 6ft-tall (1.8m) bear was taken from inside the temporary ice rink at the Family Fun Factory, in Weymouth, on Saturday afternoon.
It has been at the centre since it opened about four years ago.

Owner Andy Reynolds said: "It's really quite low of someone to steal him from a children's play centre." Dorset Police is investigating.
Mr Reynolds said he originally thought it had been taken as a prank and would be "held for ransom".
He added he was "absolutely devastated" that it had been taken and said it would cost about £400 to replace.
"It's not the sort of thing you could just stick in a bag and forget about - someone's got [to] know where it is."

Dorset Police said no arrests had been made.

Liquorice allsort theft appeal from Royal Cornwall Hospital
1:00pm Monday 11th November 2013 in News

Emergency Department staff at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro are appealing for the return of a liquorice allsort shaped piece of their play house that has gone missing.
The piece, which is part of a large soft play house bought following fundraising efforts by staff in the department, is shaped like a large, round liquorice.
The house was only introduced to the children’s waiting area in mid-October and within 24 hours the piece had disappeared. Staff are asking anyone who may have seen something to come forward.

Sharon Etheridge, ED staff nurse, said: “The house cost several hundred pounds to buy and came from a specialist provider of equipment and toys for hospitals and those with special needs.
"It was brilliant because it allowed children brought into the department to be able to build the house as they wanted it and it provided a welcome distraction in what can be a daunting experience for them.

"We’d very much like to appeal to anyone who might have picked it up to please return it. The rest of the house is not useable without it and it will cost us a great deal to replace.”

The ED team say toys often disappear but they tend to be just small things that children pop in their pockets and they accept that happens but this latest incident involves a very large piece of a brand new item of play equipment which had been bought through the fundraising efforts of staff for use by children who were coming to ED and so obviously in need of distraction.

Sharon added: “Members of our team had taken part in a number of activities and had spent time collecting money on the Piazza in Truro to raise enough to be able to buy this. We had waited until the new unit was almost completed before purchasing the house. We were so pleased to finally buy it and now we can’t put it out.”

Young Chinese boy's eyes gouged out in attack

A boy lies on his hospital bed with his eyes covered with bandages as his mother sits next to him at a hospital in Taiyuan, northern China's Shanxi province on 27 August

The little boy is out of danger and is now recovering in hospital
Police in China have offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of a woman suspected of gouging out a six-year-old boy's eyes.

The attack happened in Fenxi, Shanxi province, on 24 August.

China eye-gouge case: Boy receives prosthetic implants

Chinese boy Guo Bin after he was fitted with prosthetic eyes, 22 November 2013
Guo Bin underwent a series of operations and now has prosthetic eyes

The Chinese boy whose eyes were gouged out in an attack in August is recovering from surgery which completes the process of implanting prosthetic eyes.

Guo Bin has undergone a series of operations for him to have prosthetic eyes to give him a natural appearance. These will not restore his vision.

His mother, Wang Wenli, told the BBC they "had to try everything".

He was found with his eyes missing, covered in blood in Shanxi last August.

Police suspected his late aunt was responsible for gouging his eyes out. Six days after the incident, she reportedly killed herself by jumping into a well. Her motive for the attack remains unclear.

"If there is any hope at all of him being able to regain his sight, even if it is very limited, then I have to try everything," the boy's mother, Wang Wenli, told the BBC on Friday in Shenzhen, where the boy was being treated.

"My dream is for him to see just a little light. Not to always live in darkness".

Guo Bin's operation to prepare for prosthetic eye implants began in September.

A spokesman for his doctor Dennis Lam, who is volunteering his services for free, said at the time the boy would receive implants similar to artificial eyeballs to give volume to the eye in order to fit an eye shell.

After a recovery period, prosthetic eyes could then be attached. These will be then connected to tissue and muscle for movement. Sensory devices that generate electronic signals to help him identify shapes could then be fitted.

Dr Lam had said he hoped Guo Bin could benefit from the further development of electronic eye technology directly linked to the brain - something he said was at least five to 10 years in the future.

Rochester town centre paving stolen in 'brazen operation'

Paving stones worth more than £7,000 have been dug up by thieves thought to have pretended to be workmen.
The 40 sq m of Yorkstone slabs were taken from Rochester's historic centre on Friday night.

Medway Council said stolen highways barriers could have been set up to make it look as if legitimate work was being carried out.
A 35-year-old man from Chatham has been arrested on suspicion of theft and released on bail until 14 January.

A council spokeswoman said the paving was dug up at the junction of St Margaret's Street and Boley Hill, next to Rochester Cathedral and castle.
The authority is now looking for matching Yorkstone to replace the stolen slabs.

Councillor Phil Filmer said: "This appears to be a brazen operation to make it look genuine. It would have taken time and effort to set up and work in this way.
"It could be very difficult for the council to replace the missing slabs with matching Yorkstone as it is difficult to get hold of."

He asked anyone who may have seen what was happening to contact the police.

A strange and horrific crime:

Mafia 'fed rival to pigs while he was still alive'
Italian mobsters beat rival gangster with metal bars before feeding him to pigs, police investigation claims
By Nick Squires, Rome
3:25PM GMT 28 Nov 2013

Mafia mobsters allegedly beat a rival gangster with metal bars and then fed him to pigs while he was still alive, it has emerged from an investigation by the Italian police.
Francesco Raccosta was allegedly fed to the pigs, which are prized for their ability to dispose of most of a human body, as part of a bloody turf war between two clans belonging to the 'Ndrangheta mafia of Calabria, in the far south of Italy.

The horrific killing is reminiscent of a scene in the film Snatch, directed by Guy Ritchie, in which a British gangster called Brick Top recommends disposing of a dead body by feeding it to pigs.

The murder of Raccosta was allegedly led by Simone Pepe, 24, a rival gangster, who was arrested this week.
He described the killing in chilling terms to a friend in a telephone conversation that was intercepted by police.
“It was satisfying to hear him scream...Mamma mia, how he squealed, but I couldn’t give a s---. Someone said a few bits of him remained at the end of it all, but I couldn’t see anything, for me nothing remained at all. I said, wow, how a pig can eat!”

Pepe is suspected of having carried out at least three other murders, including that of Vincenzo Raccosta, the father of Francesco Raccosta.
The murders were allegedly committed as revenge for the death of mafia boss Domenico Bonarrigo, 45, on March 3 2012.
The murder involving the pigs allegedly took place 10 days later, as a bitter feud between a clan led by the Raccosta and Ferraro families and a rival group led by the Mazzagatti family span out of control.

Evidence of the murder came to light during an investigation by police into the 'Ndrangheta’s business enterprises in Calabria and Rome, which resulted in the seizure this week of property and other assets worth 70 million euros.
The mafia organisation, which makes millions of pounds a year from cocaine trafficking, extortion and other crimes, has for years invested its profits in legitimate businesses.

The police codenamed their operation “Erinni” — the Italian for Erinyes, who were goddesses of vengeance in Greek mythology, corresponding to the Furies of Roman mythology.

Still, I expect the killers went to confession afterwards, so that's all right then...

Sevenoaks knicker store raided by thieves
Thursday, December 05, 2013 Sevenoaks Chronicle

A LINGERIE boutique has been cleared out by burglars just a month after opening in Sevenoaks.
Thieves struck at Lovell & Vie in Hollybush Lane on Monday night and made off with a stash of underwear and swimming garments.

Their crime was discovered by an off-duty police officer who spotted bras lying on the floor at the rear of the premises.

Stunned owner Kari Keating told the Chronicle that the raid had been staged exactly a month after the shop opened.
And, with Christmas just weeks away, the business has been severely rocked, she said.

Yesterday (Wednesday), as she got to grips with the aftermath of the raid, Ms Keating told the Chronicle: “It’s so depressing. Everyone has been so welcoming since we opened and now this has happened.
“We’re still working out how much stock was taken – all we know for sure at the moment is that it’s a lot.
“When we arrived on Tuesday morning, there were a few items left so we’ve bagged them up and taken them out in case the yobs came back.
“We’re determined not to let these people beat us and we’ve placed an order for more supplies but it’s been difficult so close to Christmas.”

The owner, who has been working since the summer to get the boutique up and running in time for its November 1 launch, was planning to reopen today with the items that were left after the raid.
“It’s very sad,” said Ms Keating. “But we’re sure we can get replacement stock in very shortly and I’d urge customers for their continued support.”

Anyone who saw suspicious activity near the shop on Monday night or the early hours of Tuesday morning should contact Kent Police by calling 101.

Odd indeed. Given the time and effort involved there can't be much profit in it. Bit like the theft of 1/8 acre of Brussells Sprouts.
