    When Compasses Misbehave

Here's a zoomed section, with the location of The Devil's Punchbowl approximately where I've marked the blue X. As you can see, it's in an area with a significant local magnetic field, so compass deviations shouldn't come as a surprise:

    Fortean Podcasts

I started listening to the Strange Trails podcast last night about the legend of the Shadow Man. Thought it would be entertaining, along the lines of Dark Histories. After a few minutes, something didn't feel right though and I decided to Google it. It's a total work of fiction, with actors...

    When Compasses Misbehave

The British Geological Survey produces a detailed, zoomable map showing magnetic anomalies over the British Isles, with red and orange showing the strongest local magnetic fields and deep blue the weakest. As you can see, London and the area due south is mostly red or orange. South Cornwall...

'The Lord of the Rings' Starting Point!

    1) looks like a fanciful depiction of Noah's ark. 2) The "Balrog" looks like a Wyvern to me (perhaps @lordmongrove would care to comment?). 3) I'm sure Boromir only had the one horn! 4) The "Dùnadan" look vaguely like Bayeux Tapestry-era Norman cavalry to me, but I'm no expert. Have to admit...

    Latest Reports Of UFO Sightings

Rapidly moving cylinder spotted over New York's LaGuardia Airport. A drone seems the most likely explanation, but the apparent extreme velocity does appear anomalous: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-13350633/ufo-drone-new-york-city-laguardia-airport.html

Saint George: Not Only England, But Also....

You're absolutely right of course and it would be far more authentic if celebrants just carried the St. George's Cross on this day. The Union Flag though does seem to carry rather more English weight than any of the other home nations and will often be seen alongside the Flag of St. George.

    Forgotten History

The saying goes "never bring a knife to a gunfight". Just occasionally though the apparently weaker protagonist comes out on top. As we're coming up to the 83rd anniversary of the sinking of the Bismarck, I thought I'd pay a brief homage to the courageous RAF crewmen who pulled off the daring...

    Most Historically Inaccurate Movies

I posted something about Percy Fawcett earlier on the large snakes thread and just looked up some reviews of the 2016 Lost City of Z movie. Nothing quite as egregious as Braveheart, but it does have its share of anachronisms and other goofs: Set in 1906, there is an early shot of a steam...

    Most Historically Inaccurate Movies

OK, so we have threads here for horror, sci-fi, steampunk and worst movies, which sometimes touches on this topic, but I thought a thread dedicated to ostensively historical films which are littered with anachronisms and other cringeworthy goofs could be quite entertaining. For the purposes of...
