Are Opals Really Bad Luck?

It is very dependent on colour, type, size, quality etc, some opals are worth up to £30,000 per carat for a perfect black opal, whete as a diamond is about £700 per carat.

So they can still cost a pretty penny? But maybe their reputation suffers for not being on the diamonds scale.

How expensive is the average opal? You don't often hear of diamonds being unlucky, you see.
I don't buy them often, but here is a link to current auctions on ebay.

There are different types of opals from different places. I have seen some really nice ones go over a thousand dollars at auction, but I think they can be a lot more expensive:

Looks like tops is between 5-8K retail, which is why auctions are the way to go.

Here is a very nice one for $600:

It depends on how spectacular they look. If they don't have much colour, they're fairly cheap. Beautiful ones or rare types at the other end of the scale.

What are opal gemstones made of? Can you manufacture one?

It's possible to fake something up with resin and pigment or fused glass with dichroic glass melted in.

This is thw most expensive opal ever found, a pipe opal created in a fossilised shell that is worth $1 million

The De Boers diamond company control pretty much all of the world wide diamond market and control the price in a similar way that OPEC control the price of oil, by limiting the supply, they also had a fantastic marketing campaign 'diamonds are a girls best friend'

I like Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Cheapest opal I've seen is £14.99 but you could probably get them cheaper from psychic and magical shops. The stones and gems usually go for £2 to £3. They usually have them cheaper to attract the non magical public buying more with a deal, because such shops, don t do so well in the expensive items like Crystal Balls and Pendulums.

Are opals really bad luck? Yes, emphatically.

In my experience, obviously. Your mileage may vary.
