It is very dependent on colour, type, size, quality etc, some opals are worth up to £30,000 per carat for a perfect black opal, whete as a diamond is about £700 per carat.

Not sure. But De Beers the diamond specialist put the boot in about them being unlucky.
The De Boers diamond company control pretty much all of the world wide diamond market and control the price in a similar way that OPEC control the price of oil, by limiting the supply, they also had a fantastic marketing campaign 'diamonds are a girls best friend'How expensive is the average opal?
