Strange Crimes

Murders usually get solved* - Bible John and the death of Wille McRae being dishonourable mentions.

* have I got that right @maximus otter ?

A question that’s a lot more complicated than just a simple number:

About three quarters of all UK murders result in someone being charged:

“For the year ending March 2021, 29% of homicide cases had no suspects charged as at 10 December 2021 when data was extracted from the Homicide Index for analysis. This has now fallen to 22% (as at 6 December 2022) as police have had longer to conclude investigations.”

“In the three years from the year ending March 2020 to the year ending March 2022, 80% of suspects indicted for homicide, where we have information on a court outcome, were found guilty of homicide, 13% were acquitted, and 4% were convicted of a lesser offence.”

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula.../articles/homicideinenglandandwales/march2022 (See Section 8)

Plus of course murders may not be discovered for years, or may be solved years or decades after commission…

This is the case of a "suicide" for an Italian banker (a classic: see also Roberto Calvi and his passion for London bridges).
David Rossi (the link is on an italian page, click the right button to translate): "On March 6, 2013, David Rossi, born in Siena on June 2, 1961, fell from the window of his office and died shortly thereafter. The Siena prosecutor's office investigated the case. Two other investigations had previously been carried out, which had concluded that it was a suicide, but many elements were never clarified".

It's interesting because there are a "missing time" and two "ghosts"!

The television programs Le Iene on Italia 1, Non è l'Arena on LA7 and Sedici Storie on Rai Storia, gave wide coverage to the story, also underlining that some of the people involved had participated in red-light parties. The Genoa prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the matter, searched the house of Antonino Monteleone, correspondent for the program Le Iene, and acquired some documents that were in his possession.

During the investigations it was discovered that David Rossi's watch was not on his wrist at the time of the fall, but was thrown from the window of his office twenty minutes later.[8]

A magistrate who was investigating the incident received death threats, and was given an unexploded cartridge from a 9mm pistol.[9]

The camera footage showed that two people arrived at the scene and approached David Rossi while he was still alive, but they left shortly after, without providing assistance.[10]

Following the shelving of the investigation with the hypothesis that the death was due to suicide, in 2020 the Genoa prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the magistrates who had dealt with the case to ascertain the correct fulfillment of the activities.

I agree, at least I hope that they are. No need for us to know everything at this stage of course.

I can see mistaken identity though I haven't read of any candidates for the intended target. Although I am sure they are sterling characters who love their dear grey-haired old mothers and the streets are safe under them.

Actually... The Fair Folk ( I won't hear a word said against them) is one of the few groups who haven't been suggested as perps!
Just had a look into it, there is some mention of a planning dispute over some decking at a hotel nearby whilst the hotel owner has been cleared the suspicion is was one of the builders who lost work when the project did not go ahead, seems a little far fetched to me as their identity would be well known, however the gun used was very old not the type of thing your modern day hitman (or woman) uses but who knows ? A gun is a gun I guess

Happily unsolved murders are very rare and with the modern day surveillance society we live in, getting rarer all the time

It feels like excution or assassination rather than murder. But I'm not sure those are real subsections of unlawful killing of a human by a human.
I would argue specific type or motive of murder. Still murder, but a sub category.

but as otter pointed out... 22% with no suspect charged is... a large enough number that I'd not consider his case all that special. At least not unusual in having no charges filed. Other aspects maybe.

I've had a few thinks about that over the years.... I don't think this is as true as people think it is. it's true... in that it's less common to get away... but very much still possible. the question is how much though... and.. yeah....

Frenchman On Trial For Recruiting Strangers To Rape Drugged Wife

A French pensioner went on trial Monday on charges of allowing scores of strangers to rape his wife after he drugged her, in a case that has horrified the country.

Fifty men, recruited online, are also being tried in the southern city of Avignon alongside the main suspect, a 71-year-old former employee at France's state-owned power utility company EDF.

Police counted a total of 92 rapes committed by 72 men, 51 of whom were identified.

The men, aged between 26 and 74, are accused of raping the 72-year-old woman who, her lawyers say, was so heavily sedated she was not aware of the abuse that went on for a decade.

Police began to investigate the defendant, Dominique P., in September 2020 when he was caught by a security guard secretly filming under the skirts of three women in a shopping centre.

Police said they found hundreds of pictures and videos of his wife on his computer, visibly unconscious and mostly in the foetal position.

The images are alleged to show dozens of rapes in the couple's home in Mazan, a village of 6,000 people around 33 kilometres (21 miles) from Avignon in Provence.

Investigators also found chats on a site called coco.fr, since shut down by police, in which he recruited strangers to come to their home and have intercourse with his wife.

Dominique P. admitted to investigators that he gave his wife powerful tranquilisers, especially Temesta, an anxiety-reducing drug.

Raped 50 times and she wasn't aware? :thought:

Well, how wrong l was - he’s pleaded guilty:

“Dominique Pelicot, the 71-year-old man accused of drugging his wife to sleep and recruiting dozens of men to abuse her for over 10 years, has admitted to all the charges against him in his first testimony since the trial opened on 2 September.”

under French law, what impact does this have on the other defendents?

Anonymous nasty letters are causing havoc in a Yorkshire village.

Safe Guardian link -

Poison pen letters leave ‘cloud of vitriol’ hanging over East Yorkshire village

A “cloud of vitriol” hangs over an East Yorkshire village amid a two-year campaign of anonymous poison pen letters that have caused some people who lived there to move away, they have said.

The “personal, obscene and targeted” letters have caused chaos in the quiet hamlet of Shiptonthorpe over the last two years, leaving residents upset, frightened and unable to know who they can trust.

Police have carried out inquiries over the insulting letters, which did not contain specific threats but included wishing cancer on one resident and calling another a “cow”.

Appalling behaviour by this guy, he obviously expected the police to endorse his behaviour but was arrested instead. Vid at link.

A Western Australian man has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly using cable ties to restrain three children.

Police said the man had detained the six-year-old girl and two boys aged seven and eight after finding them swimming on a vacant property. Video circulated online appears to show two of the children tied up and crying. Top state officials say they are "appalled" by the footage and police have called for calm in the community.

Authorities said the 45-year-old man had called them on Monday to report the incident in Broome, about 2,000km (1,200 miles) north of Perth, telling them he had found the children in an "unoccupied pool".

Officers arrived to see two children "physically restrained" with cable ties and later found the oldest boy who had fled the scene, WA Police said.

Footage shared widely online shows two children - who appear to be Indigenous - in a driveway, while onlookers urge a man, who is white, to let them go.

Paramedics assessed the two children at the scene and they were reunited with their families shortly after, according to authorities.

Police said the "force used to restrain" the three children "was not proportionate" given their age and vulnerability.

He's been found guilty.

An Australian man who used cable ties to detain children caught swimming in his backyard pool has been found guilty of two counts of aggravated common assault.

Images of Matej Radelic, 46, restraining three distressed children - aged six, seven and eight - on his Broome property in March made global headlines.

He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, with prosecutors arguing his actions were "dehumanising" and unreasonable in the circumstances.

However his lawyers argued Mr Radelic had made a "lawful" citizen's arrest.

He is dangerous. His previous offences are reckless and he has no qualms about taking over people's houses when they are out.
I wouldn't like to be alone in my home if he broke in especially at night.

Roofers in Den Bosch targeted by explosions

Houses and commercial vehicles of roofers in Den Bosch have been targeted by explosions at least nine times in recent months, writes Omroep Brabant. Insiders tell the regional broadcaster that there is a feud in the roofing industry.

Last night was another hit. A bus belonging to a 23-year-old entrepreneur went up in flames. The fire brigade and police assume that the fire was set.

The police cannot confirm whether there is a ‘war’ in the roofing industry. ‘We always look at similar cases in incidents to see if there is a possible connection,’ a spokesperson informed. Furthermore, the facts of each incident are investigated individually.

Eliminate competitor
According to roofer Ali Katkay, there is indeed fighting among roofers in his region, he told the regional broadcaster earlier. According to him, the entrepreneurs want to eliminate each other by placing explosives or destroying company buses so that they can then take over the work that someone cannot do.

According to Katkay, this happens mostly during times of dry weather. ‘When it does not rain often, there is little work,’ he said.

By the way, according to the father of the entrepreneur affected last night, there is no roofing war at all. ‘My son has no enemies,’ he said.

Previously ‘targeted actions’
In autumn 2017, cars belonging to roofing companies were also set on fire in Den Bosch. One of the roofers with whom Omroep Brabant spoke at the time was convinced they were targeted actions. ‘It is no coincidence that the victims are all roof repairers. This is how the perpetrators want to eliminate the competition. They don't give each other the light in the eyes.’

Trying to kill people at a funeral home!

A former police officer has been jailed for 11 years after he admitted attempting to murder his ex-partner and her mother at a funeral home in the Scottish Borders.

William McBurnie drove his car at speed through the front window of Zoe Turnbull's office in Jedburgh a few months after she had ended their relationship.

The 57-year-old former detective was appearing at the High Court in Livingston for sentencing.

Judge Lord Mulholland told McBurnie he had used his car as a "lethal weapon" and his conduct had been "cowardly and reckless".

Virginia McCullough: Daughter who murdered parents and hid bodies for years is jailed for life

A woman who murdered both her parents and then hid their bodies in her house for years has been jailed for life.

Virginia McCullough poisoned her father John and attacked her mother Lois with a hammer and a knife, then covered up their deaths with a web of lies to family.

Screenshot_2024-10-10_at_13.13.37.png

The 36-year-old told relatives and authorities that the couple were unwell or away on holiday whenever they questioned why they had not seen them.

Concerns were first raised for the couple in September 2023, when the couple's GP became worried that Mr McCullough, 70, had not attended appointments or picked up his medication.

A missing person investigation began that month, and when police visited the couple's home in Pump Hill, Great Baddow, where their daughter claimed they would be away travelling until October.

That aroused officers' suspicions and they got permission to enter the house, where they found human remains later identified as Mr and Mrs McCullough.

At Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday, McCullough was jailed for life with a minimum term of 36 years, having admitted two counts of murder in June.

A 911 caller said a camper was killed by a bear. Police say it was murder.

Dustin Kjersem’s body was discovered on Oct. 12 at a remote Montana campsite. The 35-year-old’s injuries were so severe that a 911 caller said it looked like a bear attack.

AA1spOde.img

Police suspect he was murdered.

Kjersem set out for a weekend of camping at a remote Montana forest site late last week. Police say he was last in contact with his family the afternoon of Oct. 10. He was meant to meet a friend on Friday, and when he didn’t show up, his friend started searching for him.

The friend found his body inside a tent at a forest service campsite near Big Sky, in southern Montana, around 10 a.m. Saturday local time. The friend called 911, thinking Kjersem had been killed by a bear.

Bear attacks in the area are not uncommon.

Local law enforcement officials inspected the campsite, along with an agent from the Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks service who is an expert in bear attacks.

The agent did not find any signs of recent bear activity, leading police to treat the case as a homicide. An autopsy supported that theory, indicating that Kjersem suffered multiple chop wounds that led to his death, authorities said in a news conference Wednesday.

Scammers stole a huge haul of cheese.

Cheese firm hails ‘overwhelming’ response after £300,000 theft

The owners of Neal’s Yard Dairy have said they have had an “overwhelming” response after it emerged that more than 22 tonnes of cheddar had been stolen from the London cheese specialist.

The company delivered 950 wheels of cheddar – reported to be worth as much as £300,000 – to an alleged fraudster posing as a wholesale distributor for a major French retailer.

The cheese is believed to have been spirited away to Russia or the Middle East, according to suppliers to the company who were caught up in the scam on 21 October.

Update.

A camper in Montana who was initially reported to have died in a bear attack was murdered by a stranger he welcomed to share his campsite and offered a beer, officials said.

Police say Daren Christopher Abbey, 41, was arrested and charged with murder after his DNA was discovered on a beer can at the campsite where the victim's body was found.

Dustin Kjersem, 35, was allegedly killed on 10 October and found two days later by friends who thought he had been mauled by a bear.

The two men did not know each other before the chance encounter in the outdoors, and no motive for the attack has yet been identified, Gallatin County Sheriff said in a statement.

My favourite this year has to be the man who stole 200,000 creme eggs worth 31,000 quid by breaking into a warehouse in Telford and stealing the lorry container full of them. Apologies, I am rubbish at posting links but it isn't hard to find , unlike confectionery stored in Telford.

It makes you wonder. Was his body mauled by a bear, after? Or was something so horrendous done to him that it resembled a mauling?
