The following happened a number of years ago to a friend of my ex, I’ve changed his name to Jon. It’s something I’ve spoken about before in the days of using newsgroups - on a true hauntings group if I remember correctly - and have also had it read out on a paranormal podcast.
A bit of background: Jon was a down-to-earth, level-headed person, he used to be a paratrooper and enjoyed spending his spare time doing things like boxing and weight-lifting, definitely not a person prone to histrionics or of a nervous disposition. On the night of the incident Jon hadn't been drinking, he didn’t do drugs and wasn't on medication, so hallucination would be pretty low down on the list of natural explanations. I met this friend a lot of times and he was always the serious sort, definitely not one for practical jokes or making things up. My ex said when Jon told him about what had happened he seemed genuinely embarrassed and seriously worried about the whole thing.
Anyway, back to the incident... Jon’s partner at the time had been through a very tough few months with deaths in her family. She felt lost and thought she would try and seek guidance at a local Spiritualist Church. Being a total skeptic, Jon dismissed all the spiritualist talk and couldn't understand why his girlfriend believed what he thought was absolute nonsense. She, in the meantime, found the meetings and her new-found spiritualist friends comforting. One night after the girlfriend had been to her fourth or fifth meeting earlier in the evening, she and Jon went to bed as usual. This night would be one he’d never forget.
In the middle of the night Jon was awoken by something moving about on the bottom of the bed, particularly startling since they didn't have children or pets. He grabbed the torch on his bedside cabinet and shone it into the dark, and was utterly shocked with what he saw. He said there stood staring at him was what he could only describe as a foot-high, ugly, court jester-like thing. He couldn't believe what he was seeing and was scared beyond belief. The thing looked so horrible and menacing. He tried to wake his girlfriend but she was out for the count. Then the bizarre looking creature just vanished. It spooked him so much he ran into the bathroom and locked himself in - he said he’d never been so frightened in all his life. He stayed in the bathroom all night, too scared to come back out, eventually falling asleep huddled in a corner of the room. The next morning he told his girlfriend what had happened during the night. When she in turn told her new spiritualist friends about the incident they said she must have taken an evil spirit home with her after the meeting.
I did wonder if it could have been sleep paralysis behind the episode, but Jon only saw the entity after sitting up and shining his torch. The obvious explanation would be that in his sleepy state he imagined it, but he was convinced he hadn’t and it was very real. I often wonder if he ever had any more experiences, but I split with his friend soon after this so never found out.
