Heard him mentioned on a Radio 4 programme yesterday as an example of a peaceful, wholesome rural dweller.
About as far from the truth as you could imagine. :chuckle:

Is he a baddie?

I've only seen clips of Out of Town and have inherited a couple of his books from my grandfather.

I don't know anything about his personality or private life.

Eh?
I thought he was like everyone's favourite granddad?
If you know something that I don't, please dish the dirt.

I used to love watching Out of Town. Jack Hargreaves projected an old-world, countrified persona, but he was actually a big cheese at Southern Television and ITV.
In spite of his image, he 'put it about' a bit with affairs on the side.

Out of Town being shown on Talking Pictures TV 6.30 p.m. Mondays. Still worth a watch.

David Baddiel has a touch of the Jack Hargreaves about him. Could be father & son.

Hargreaves wasn't a criminal, he just projected a persona that was nothing like his actual personality or life.

For a start he was no simple rural dweller; rather a hardheaded businessman in independent television which was then a new industry.

There was a trail of wives, mistresses and children.

When the countryside was being opened up with national parks and rural footpaths, Hargreaves vigorously opposed both on the grounds that townies should stay at home.

His presentation of the village idyll sold well but he resented sharing it. :chuckle:

Jack Hargraves was compulsory viewing On Sunday afternoon along with "World at War" This is why I did the washing up and read a lot of books. Hated Jack Hargreaves and his bloody shed.

I enjoyed How? with Jack Hargreaves and never got into his solo programme.
As a London lad, it was completely out of my interest zone.

I remember Hargreaves on How! explaining on children’s tv all about his favourite pipes. He produced some ornate monster and said ‘This is my favourite - a Chinese Opium pipe but we’ll leave that till later’.
That’s what was so good about How! It sometimes ventured into the territory of dangerous stuff your teachers didn’t dare go near.

Back then, pipe smoking was seen as both dignified and relatively healthy compared to your Player's No. 6 or indeed Capstan Full Strength.
Opium though - hmmm. Possibly regarded as rather too exotic to be influencing children.

Here's Jack demonstrating the technique for mounting a ship in a bottle.
(He doesn't explain the most crucial secret which of course I know.)

Jack calls the eponymous vessel a Cornish crabber, which I misheard as grabber and assumed was the specialist tool he was poking at the ship with. :chuckle:

But still Brand puts out broadcasts reminiscent of David Icke ... which has nothing to do with any sexual allegations. Thus, still a Fortean topic open to discussion.
It's not all about sex, y'know. :D
