Doctor Who [Spoilers]

Thanks, Emps.

'Imself is most distressed with Catherine Tate being in it. I hope she's as good as some are saying. At least she's not going to be the new assistant anyway.

It's strange, really. I mean, now there's no Mickey, no Pete Tyler/Jackie Tyler Dr.Enders type soap element - what's going to replace it? I sort of felt Rose was needed to reintroduce the Doctor; y'know, sort of look at it from the assistant's perspective for a change. But I wonder whether that's going to continue, or whether the Doctor is now okay to go it alone without the 'human' angle.

I did like that Cyberman crying, though. I sort of thought a bit more should have been mentioned about that. Sort of noticing why the Cybermen were only one flight down but didn't make it in time, sort of thing. Then again, maybe just the hint of it was enough.

I don't know if people here have seen it, there's a new press release from the BBC about the next companion. It's not Catherine Tate but the black girl from the last episode (playing an other character obviously).

A question for the people who have seen the old series: does the doc always fall in love with his companions?

I liked the finale, although I was a bit dissapointed that they didn't actually kill Rose after all this "this is the story of how I died" stuff.
I liked Rose but I think that some closure would be good. People popping in from impossible other places all the time gets a bit used with time.

Is there any legal way of obtaining the old series for home viewing?
Is the movie from 96 any good?

Do you know where to find downloadable dr. who sounds that aren't mp3?

It's never happened before, although the new series implies that the Doctor gets very close emotionally to his companions of the past.

Yes, there are quite a few stories on DVD to keep you occupied. I'd recommend stuff like Tomb of the Cybermen, The Ark in Space, Inferno, The Carnival of Monsters, Genesis of the Daleks, The Robots of Death, City of Death, Resurrection of the Daleks. I also have a soft spot for Ghost Light, which made me nostalgic for the seventies Doctor. I'm sure others would have different suggestions.

I liked it at the time and was disappointed there wasn't a new series starring Paul McGann. Haven't seen it since, though, and it was a very Americanised version of the series which tends to put people off.

If you're going to watch the 96 movie, don't ask Who fans about it first.
But since you have...

Eric Roberts gets to be gloriously over the top and brings off quite a chilling villain. The Tardis interior is lovely. Paul McGann is one of the best actors in Britain and was able to pull off an endearing, interesting Doctor. Don't worry too much about the script (it has good points and bad points) and just enjoy the ride.

If you like the 8th Doctor you can read his adventures in BBC books or, if you're really taken with Paul McGann you can hear Doctor Who adventures courtesy of the very excellent Big Finish who have a huge range of Who and Who related stuff, some of it quite brilliantly done. You can also find Doctors 5, 6 and 7 there, and a range of Doctor Who stories called the 'Unbound' line which are more experimental.

I'd add Pyramids of Mars to that list (and it was before the whole face on Mars business) and Carnival of Monsters.

As Doc_Occ says the TV movie had better actors and set design than script, which was a shame, still fairly entertaining though.

B-b-but I mentioned Carnival of Monsters! I never saw that one originally, but read the novelisation as a kid and thought it was great. It was interesting to actually watch it a few years later.

7th Doctor: Ghost Light, Remembrance of the Daleks, Curse of Fenric, The Happiness Patrol.

6th Doctor: Ummm... go with any Big Finish audio here, Colin Baker is awesome when he's working with a script that plays to his strengths.

5th Doctor: Avoid Timeflight. Find Black Orchid if you can. Davison was under-rated by everyone (including himself) and consequently his run is often overlooked. But it's definitely worth looking into. There is much joy to be had here.

4th Doctor: What everyone else has said, plus: Talons of Weng Chiang, Horror of Fang Rock, Brain of Morbius. State of Decay is OK too.

Has anyone mentioned City of Death yet? Co-written by Douglas Adams, and has a great soundtrack.

Oh, and it's actually an entertaining story, too. Although Adams did reuse the plot for one of the Dirk Gently novels.

CoD is one of my all-time favourites. But didn't Adams re-use the plot of the uncompleted Shada for the second Dirk Gently novel?

The plot, the name of a major character, most of the jokes...

Hell, the Hitch Hiker books were a re-write of the radio series.

DNA, much as I admire him, was a shameless self-plagarist but no worse than Arthur C Clarke, who took a short story and turned it into a movie, then into a novel, then a sequel to the movie and then a sequel to the novel and now has his name put on books written by other people entirely.

I feel Douglas, who never really wanted to be a writer in the first place, would much rather have gone right to that last step and saved all the tedious messing about with sequels.

In typical DNA style it was more a bit of both.

The "Dawn of Life" bit in "City of Death" was in one of the Dirk Gently novels

The Cambridge College/Tardis bit in "Shada" was reused too.

It's hardly plagiarism to recycle stuff you've written yourself though.

I wasn't really criticising him for doing it. The way it's presented in Dirk Gently is quite different, and the two stories are distinct. (Let's face it, in the book he gets to do all the rambling stream of unconciousness stuff he was good at, where a Doctor Who script didn't really allow for it.)

I think City of Death is the quintessential Fourth Doctor/Romana story. This may be because of my personal biases about Tom Baker, Lalla Ward, and Douglas Adams, but I don't think any other story really captured the right feel. (From what I've seen Shada would have come close, but that's probably the same biases coming out.)

Last year here in Edinburgh we held a City of Death event - we showed all four episodes in a local BFI affiliated cinema and had interview sessions with Julian Glover (Count Scarlioni / Scaroth). Very good it was and it seemed to be enjoyed by all. I can attest to the fact that Julina is also a very nice chap who has had a very wide and varied career and he was able to tlak about all aspects when called upon to do so.

Just couldn't help it, could you? Had to outdo me in Doctor Who geek-ness.

Keep this up, and there might be a little "surprise" in the next platypus I give your fiancee.

hey just be thankful I din't mention the meal I had with him at lunchtime and then the evening drinks and meal and for both he told me lots of stories which he is very unlikely to ever tell in a convention type setting. Organising these things has its advantages :)

I guess if it's a male platypus it might have poison in it's claws! Or an exploding platypus - cool!

Hoy - you're supposed to be on my side!

I work very hard to get the privelege of meeting these people I'll have you know, including soem of my Fortean heroes as well and in one marvellous case a Fortean and Dr Who hero in the same person - a genuine Marvel No Prize for anyone who can work out who it is and Min is not allowed to enter.

John Levine? He was/is quite an interesting guy, but does Sgt. Benton count as a "Dr Who hero"? Not sure, even if he did sign my copy of "The Android Invasion".

I give up, Gordon, and refer you to the photo of me sitting next to Tom!

Now there's a genuine Dr Who hero!

Met John Levine and Tom Baker - looked after him at a signing once :)

Aah, it would have taken a few years to guess that one.

John Levine was our lodger, briefly, back in the sixties, around about the time when he was Corporal Benton. According to family legend, our dog bit him.

I was in a toliet in a hotel once and he came in and started telling me about how he had just been bitten by a snake. I made my excuses and left...

Actually, he came to our school to talk about his new-found love of God (thanks, John), which was when he signed my book. I felt a bit awkward later, when I found out that Android Invasion was the actors' least favourite UNIT story. What I was really jealous of, though, was that he spoke to my brother's class, too (4 years below me, and therefore presumably a bit young for religion!), and spoke about Dr Who for an hour, talking about how he started off inside a Yeti, and taking the piss out of his own big nose!

Torchwood

Torchwood follows the adventures of a team of investigators as they use alien technology to solve crimes, both alien and human.

This new British sci-fi crime thriller, from Russell T Davies, follows the team as they delve into the unknown. They are fighting the impossible while keeping their everyday lives going back at home.

The cast includes John Barrowman (Doctor Who) as the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness, the ever-watchful heart of the team guarding against the fragility of humankind.

Eve Myles (Doctor Who, Belonging) plays Gwen Cooper, initially an outsider whose first encounter with Torchwood sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth and throws her into an unfamiliar but exciting world.

Burn Gorman (Bleak House) plays the raw but charming medic, Owen Harper, and Naoko Mori (Absolutely Fabulous) is Toshiko Sato, the team member who specialises in all things technical.

Torchwood is written by Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall, with contributing writers including PJ Hammond, Toby Whithouse and Helen Raynor.

So when is this set? Present day-ish? Last time we saw Captain Jack, he'd been brought back to life by Rose on a space station in the year 100,000 (or thereabouts), and the Tardis left without him. First time we saw him, it was WWII and he had somehow popped in from the 25th century, but IIRC, did not seem to know the Doctor (although he knew of Time Lords), which must mean he'd not worked for Torchwood, because they're all constantly banging on about the Doctor at that place. Quid pro quo, I suppose, because Torchwood also got mentioned in every bleedin' episode of Who this season...

The pedant in me requires a plausible story to get Jack back to 21st Century Earth (preferably one that doesn't involve ice-dancing - not that I know anything about that...). Still, he was a fun character, and it would be good to get him face-to-face with Tennant's Doctor in the upcoming series.
