Fortean-Themed Albums, Songs & Music

looks like I came in a bit late for this one but just to show I care...

basically anything by coil (hellraiser, how to destroy angels, the sea priestess, Red Birds Will Fly Out of the East and Destroy Paris in a Night, The Dreamer is Still Asleep, The First Five Minutes After Violent Death etc etc)

zombie - the cranberries
Language Is a Virus from Outer Space - laurie anderson
Strange Angels - "
every day is like sunday - morrissey
Meet Murder My Angel - Soft Cell
paradise now - meat beat manifesto
you mind belongs to the state - "
I got the fear - " (well if we can have paranoid)
MARRS NEEDS WOMEN - "
re-animator - "
god o.d. - "
HALLUCINATION GENERATION - you guessed it!
radio babylon - " (a bit obtuse maybe)
BRAINWASHED THIS WAY
ZOMBIE
SON OF SAM
FUTURE WORLDS - all same as above
impossible worlds - the shamen
voodoo people - the prodigy
voodoo child - jimi H
the wind cries mary - " (i think)
levitation, space chase, silver machine etc - hawkwind (so prog fans - didn't think of that one!)
probably everything by barclay james harvest (if I remember their album covers correctly!)
dreamspace - scorn
space oddity - bowie (no one mentioned that one either)
the man machine, the robots, radiation - kraftwerk
spaceman - baylon zoo
Strange Phenomena
The Man With The Child In His Eyes
Houdini
Waking The Witch
Rubberband Girl
Cloudbusting - all kate bush (I include the last purely because it's about wilhelm Reich of orgone fame)

Enough Already!!! I'll probably think of more...

I just had an idea for a similar thread - song lyrics. Sometimes the title of a song isn't fortean, but it's contents are. For an eg - radiohead's bulletproof - 'I can't help that feeling / I could float through the ceiling / but gravity always wins,' levitation!

Also, the asides about prog not being revived - what about radiohead, porcupine tree, beta band, smashing pumpkins etc. It all depends how you define prog. Does it mean any band with over ten members and a penchant for bathing in pure LSD? Or a band that stretches the conventions of modern day music (a la beck). Not the real place for such a discussion I know, but just wanted to throw my tuppence in.

Dot ;)

the great gig in the sky
us and them
momentary lapse of reason
pigs on the wing
all by the pink floyd:D :D :D :D

I would just like to say about the Prog thing that, although I do like Porcupine Tree alot aswell as some of the other bands you mentioned but I would classify Prog as a band that does indeed exceed the boundries of popular music but most of the bands you stated were not necessarily born from a genre of unique ideas but were split into catergories of student music, indie bands and plain ol' rock. I was talking of doing things like they 'yoo-ster' with hammond organs and bass's with far too many frets and dressing up in concerts like good ol' Peter Gabriel used to do before he got all 'Sledge-Hammer-y'
Having said that, I'm with you on some of the bands you picked and maybe they contiued proggin' out and we didn't even know it. I hope that more people recognise your point of view, and when they bring out new bands they won't slap a label on them so quick, they maybe 'prog' but it's not unless 'THEY' say so.
Thanks for the tuppence, Dot it was a good tuppence.

I've just been told to mention, (by my boyfriend) that Porcupine Tree vehemently deny being Prog Rock. He saw them live once and his friends went backstage and got into a discussion with the 'Tree'. By all accounts they mentioned something about them being Prog and they, shall we say didn't agree. Anyway I had to tell you guys that-(and now perhaps you'll let go of my...) So now we can all rest easy...can't we dear...

Ok I know I had given up but you can't not have
I Am The Urban Spaceman - Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band (weird band name, rather catchy tune)

I agree fully - that's why I posted it on the 15th.

Sorry. ;)

regarding prog

Sorry, sapho, always have to have the last word ;) I was thinking about what you said, and I think the reason PT refused to be called prog is because it's embarrassing. I mean they did an entire album based on a hook from a pink floyd song, and anyone who says pink floyd aren't prog need to look it up in a dictionary. As to the labels that you put on, I didn't konw there was such a thing as a student band! (although I know what you mean) you said

most of the bands you stated were not necessarily born from a genre of unique ideas

but a lot of the bands you mention in your posts weren't either, Yes, Jethro Tull and many others started out life in the late sixties as either rock'n'roll or blues bands, many doing cover versions in pubs. The fact that they ended up spawning triple concept albums based on the life of gandhi had a lot to do with the after effects of the summer of love, i.e. acid, free love and orientalism. Trying to get a tripped out, sitar-playing, guy who's in the middle of a tantric love session to play a 4 minute pop song is next to impossible!

Glad to be of help :D
I remember starting school. It's a busy time with having to dig up all the slate and chalk for the new term. Oh, and catching something to make a bag out of.

That wasn't showing off - but this is!

Star Clusters, Nebulae and Places in Devon - David Bedford
The Age of Anxiety - Bernstein
The Invisible City of Kitezh - Rimsky-Korsakov
Utopia Limited - Gilbert & Sullivan
Thus Spake Zarathustra - Strauss

So, at the previous rate of 5 minutes a tune, and double it for 'deliberate smartass-ness', that's another 50 mins in the box.

Can I make it an hour, just to build up some credit while I've got some spare time?

Fortean Times CD

I've just had a great idea. Why doesn't the Fortean Times put out a compilation CD of some of these songs... that would be most amusing...

And they could link the songs with EVP recordings, bigfeet cries and Art Bell soundbites. And hold a humungous fungus party with the profits.

"Elevation"-U2

"Bermuda Triangle"-Barry Manilow

"Mysterious Times"-Sash

"BOOM BOOM BOOM"-Outhere Brothers

"Here Comes The Hotstepper"-Ini Kamoze

Those are all such cool songs...

...oh, and "Total Eclipse of the Heart"-Nicki French
which is pants!:p

Virtually anything by Inkubus Sukkubus - excellent pagan rock/goth bang, with songs like 'wild hunt', 'women to hare' and 'vampyre erotica'. I could list all the titles but i'd be here forever as they've done over 7 albums...

How about:-

The Most Half Arsed Excuse Yet To Make You Buy All Those Records Again That You Allready Have In The Loft - Vol 1.

Now consider this, we have a minute of cheap cable airtime. What do we use as a backdrop to the song snippets in the advert?

How about rapidly changing 'Fortean Gallery' type pics hiding the subliminal message 'It's only 50 quid! Buy now! BUY NOW!' :D

A cheap advert for the album would be someone holding it close to the camera while one of the tracks is being played plus the subliminal message saying no way go mister buy are the you going cd to get go me giving now you my buy money the cd!.

lucydru

A title? how about simply "Phenome-mix" or "Charles Fort: The Soundtrack of the t-shirt of the magazine".

As for Subliminal messeging! Youallknowthatitneverworks!stupid!

to the sceptic eclectics

Interesting to see both danJW and Sapho claiming to be eclectic. Would be interested to know how you define that... Does it mean wide ranging (music-wise) or obscure? Dan saying that listening to rock/ idie metal, and a bit of industrial is eclectic, and saff saying that prog and seventies experimental is the same. Two sides of the same coin? 'I'm a devil worshipper, and I love Brittney' sounds a lot more eclectic to me.

Then again maybe it's the phantom fortean changing the spellings again, and Dan meant 'electric'. Now that would be interesting!
