Fortean-Themed Albums, Songs & Music

House of Wax

Check out the new sampler album from the House of Wax label

http://www.thehouseofwax.com

Presenting such moog orientated bands as I Monster, Morlock, Romero and Guild of Initiates.

Very fortean. Particularly Guild of Initiates "Who is the High Initiate".

Victorian Gothic in style with wierd samplings from Hammer/Amicus films, songs about Freemasonry, Transvestite Victorians, Sherlock Holmes Drug addiction and the very disturbing phrase "What's behind the curtain" will send shivers down your spine after hearing the last track.

Sorry for multiple posting

Although not strictly songs, more performance pieces, I can't recommend anything more highly that Alan Moore's "The Highbury Working" Album or infact any CD by Alan Moore. "The Birth Caul" and "The Moon and Serpent Egyptian Theatre" I haven't yet been able to track down, but all very Magick/Psychogeography orientated with plenty of Fortean Material.

Well worth checking out. I believe FT ran a competition on this website to win a copy or two.

Radiohead

There was a song that radiohead played live called "alligators in new york sewers" which is fortean enough, as well as being a UL.
It is now a B-side and is called "fog" and goes like this:
"Fog"
"There's a little child
Running round this house
And he never leaves
He will never leave
And the fog comes up from the sewers
And glows in the dark

Baby alligators in the sewers grow up fast
Grow up fast
Anything you want it can be done
How did you go bad?
Did you go bad?
Did you go bad?
Somethings will never wash away
Did you go bad?
Did you go bad?"

Thom yourke is also very paranoid about the CIA and so is sorta fortena in another aspect

How about The Who? Not just 'Tommy' (the obvious one for all the synasthaesia or however the hell you spell it) but 'Rael' and (of course) 'Halls of the Mountain King'.

'Won't get fooled again' isn't Fortean in content, but the ideology seems to be there. Sorry everyone, I'm just on one since John E died.

The day the Circus of Heaven came to town
Local folks lined the streets in a Midwestern town
Waiting anxiously for the parade to begin all around
On the very last day

A unicorn headed the mystical way
Surrounded by what seemed a thousand golden angels at play
Behind were Centaurs, elves, bright fairies all in colours of jade
On the very final day

For what seemed only just a moment in time
Seven solemn flying silvered regal horses rode by
Seven golden chariots in tow, a wonder to behold
The Seven Lords of the Mountains of Time
There then arose where nothing really stood there before
A giant tent rising one thousand feet high frofrom the floor
Towns people flocked inside with their eyes all amazed
To greet the Seventh Lord of the seventh age
A fanfare rang out in an incredible sound
Bringing out the strangest visions perfect harmony round
Any dreams he asked would they like to have seen
From historical or mythical scenes

Then there above their heads just as vivid as life
Each vision transported multitudes inventing light
Grecian galleons, the sack of Troy, to the Gardens of Babylon
A play of millions roared along
The gigantic dreams of Alexander the Great
Civil wars where fbrothers fought and killed their friendship with hate
All seen by Zeus performing scenes in the magical way
The day the circus came to town

Outside great animals as tame as the trees
Angels high in starlight dancing streets
Turning their colours with indigo and gold
Dropping violet, red and emerald snow
As the circus finally changed its invisible course
A new world to be found

On the dreamy ground we walked upon
I turned to my son and said
'Was that something beautiful, amazing, wonderful, extraordinary
beautiful?'

'Oh! It was OK!! But there were no clowns, no tigers, lions or bears,
cand-floss, toffee apples, no clowns.'

Fortean songs.

Not sure if this has been done on here before but do you know any fortean songs, here's one to get it started.

An August day in the hills of Spain, a pair of children emerged from a
cave.
The strangest sight there alone they stood, with skin of green and
words
no one had heard.
The girl was stronger, the boy was weak, with her new mother she
learned
to speak.
And wove a tale of a dying sun, the left the darkness, a dark world
come
undone.
They travelled so far. Believing they came from a star.

She fell through life, through time, through parallel lives.
The men of science, the men of fame, the men of letters tried to
explain.
Was it parallel worlds or a twist of time to make her think she'd
fallen
from the sky?
A whirlwind spun them all alone,
took them from their twilight home.
Believing they came from a star.

Artist: 10000 Maniacs

Title: Green Children

I was wondering if the pixies song "wave of mutilation" had anything to do with cattle "mute waves" but it appears not to:

Cease to resist, giving my goodbye
Drive my car into the ocean
You think I'm dead, but I sail away
On a wave of mutilation
Wave of mutilation (x2)
Wave, wave

I've kissed mermaids, rode the El Nino
Walked the sand with the crustaceans
Could find my way to Mariana
On a wave of mutilation
Wave of mutilation (x2)
Wave, wave

Wave of mutilation (x3)
Wave, wave

pixie's manta ray fits better. Black Frank claims to have been visited by UFOs in his youth:

All in a day
All for me
Trek across the space
It'll be just like they say

Oo, oo,
Oo, oo
Yeah

Since I am told
Month number three
He has no memory
Of flyers in the night

Oo, oo
Oo, oo
Yeah

They went away(2X)
My manta ray is all right(4X)

Police they say
My mother too
A fish from Mon Shamoo(?)
Above my head tonight

Oo, oo
Oo, oo
Yeah

There is a way(2X)
My manta ray is all right(7X)
(While Black Francis screams "All right!")
All right

i've always found a day in the life fortean. the mysterious death of the guy in the car accident (also starting or feeding the <paul is dead> hoax) and the <breaking news> (as ft would put it) about the holes in blackburn, lancashire and the idea that someone had to count them all...

sthg to do do with jung, imho

and by the way, synchronicity 2 by the police. <many miles away something crossed to the surface of a dark scottish lake> or sthg like that

Genesis, Home By the Sea:

Creeping up the blind side, shinning up the wall
stealing thru the dark of night
Climbing thru a window, stepping to the floor
checking to the left and the right
Picking up the pieces, putting them away
something doesn't feel quite right

Help me someone, let me out of here
then out of the dark was suddenly heard
welcome to the Home by the Sea

Coming out the woodwork, thru the open door
pushing from above and below
shadows without substance, in the shape of men
round and down and sideways they go
adrift without direction, eyes that hold despair
then as one they sign and they moan

Help us someone, let us out of here
living here so long undisturbed
dreaming of the time we were free
so many years ago
before the time when we first heard
welcome to the Home by the Sea

Sit down Sit down
as we relive out lives in what we tell you

Images of sorrow, pictures of delight
things that go to make up a life
endless days of summer longer nights of gloom
waiting for the morning light
scenes of unimportance like photos in a frame
things that go to make up a life

Help us someone, let us out of here
living here so long undisturbed
dreaming of the time we were free
so many years ago
before the time when we first heard
welcome to the Home by the Sea

Sit down Sit down
as we relive out lives in what we tell you
let us relive out lives in what we tell you

Sit down sit down
cos you won't get away
so with us you will stay
for the rest of your days. So sit down
As we relive out lives in what we tell you
Let us relive out lives in what we tell you

Sound familiar bad dreams can kill ya
Deeper the sleep the realer man I feel ya
Bad dreams sad scenes and fear
You don't want to have to wake up here
Bad dreams you don't want to have to wake up here
Bad dreams sad scenes and fear
you don't want to have to wake up here
Bad Dreams
you don't want to have to wake up here

Im running down a hall with one wall of flames
With friends I've never seen in my life with strange names
Sound familiar bad dreams can kill ya
Pains not what it seems cold stares and sudden screams
I get in fights every night as im reflecting
Throwing punches fast hard as I can but not connecting
There protected by a force field locked in an engagement
Until I see the colour red when pounding heads into the pavement
Caught up in a chase scene or working on a plan
Sometimes im falling and I have to wake up before I land
Lots of doors to open afraid what I might find.

Most fortean song ever has got to be
No doubt about it by Hot Chocolate

"If someone tells you there's no other form of life
And you believe in that too
I'm gonna tell you about the other night
And I swear that it's true..."
etc.

I heard it's based on a ufo sighting Erroll Brown had, but that might be a UL, anyone else heard that one?

Ostia (the Death of Pasolini)

There 's honey in the hollows
And the contours
of the body
A sluggish golden river
A sickly golden trickle
A golden, sticky trickle
You can hear
the bones humming
And the car reverses over
The body in the basin
In the shallow sea-plane basin.
And the car reverses over
And his body rolls over
Crushed from the shoulder
You can hear the
Bones humming
Singing like a puncture
Killed to keep
the world turning
Throw his bones over
The White Cliffs
of Dover
Into the sea
The Sea of Rome
And the bloodstained
coast
Of Ostia
Leon like a lion
Sleeping in
the sunshine.
Lion lies down.
"Out of the strong
Came forth sweetness."
Throw his bones over
The White Cliffs
of Dover
And murder me
In Ostia.
The Sea of Rome.
You can hear his bones humming.
Throw his bones over
The White Cliffs
of Dover
And into the sea
The Sea of Rome
Then murder me,
In Ostia.
-----------------------------------------------------

i have basically ever Coil album; their music is the epitomine of enigmatic forteana...this is one of my fav songs as it brings together several points of interest: the murder of the director Passolini, allusions to biblical verses, the ghosts of Aztec/Mayan ritual sacrifice...

here is some info from coil's website:

"The song "Ostia" is about the death of Pier Pasolini, an Italian filmmaker. The only Pasolini I have seen is "Salo: 120 Days in Sodom," his adaptation of Sade's libertine classic set in the days of the Italian Fascists. It is an excellent work, even though it features graphic coprophagia (shit eating) and child sex. Apparently (correct me if I err, I probably will) Pasolini had finished filming "120 Days" and picked up a boy prostitute and took him to his coastal villa in Ostia on the Italian Coast. The prostitute (an Italian government agent I've heard) ran Pasolini over in his own BMW and left him dead in a ditch. This is as much as I know, but the crickets at the beginning were recorded at the Aztec Ruins of Chichen Itza (sp?) where Aztec priests made human sacrifices. I could also be wrong about Aztec, it could have been Mayan."

"In reference to the lyrics of Ostia: This is from Judges chapter 14, vs. 14.: And he said unto them: Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness.

It is from the the story of Samson. He had killed this lion on his way to meeting his soon to be first wife, Timnath the Philistine. After hitting it off with her, passed the lion's carcass on the way home and found a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass. Samson eats the honey and gives it to his family to eat without men-tioning its source....

Later his family is throwing a feast for Timnath and 30 of her Philistine friends and Samson poses the lines in question as a riddle, telling them if they figure it out he'll give them 30 sheets and 30 garments. and if not vice versa. Samson's wife begs the answer out of him and tells her 30 friends. Samson is pissed that he lost, and his response is first to say "If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle". Then 'the spirit of the Lord came upon him' and he went out and killed 30 people to take their sheets and garments to pay off his debt.

So, is the idea here the parallel of betrayal by their lovers suffered by both Pasolini and Samson, or is it elsewhere? The golden sticky trickles seem to also stand on their own with nice multiple meanings.... "

Art Bell listeners should know this one:

The Highwayman

Written by Jimmy Webb.

I was a highwayman, along the coach roads I did ride,
With sword and pistol by my side.
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade.
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade.
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five:
But I am still alive.

I was a sailor, I was born upon the tide.
And with the sea I did abide.
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico.
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow.
And when the yards broke off, they said that I got killed:
But I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide;
Where steel and water did collide.
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado,
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below.
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound:
But I am still around.
I'll always be around,
And around and around and around and around.

I fly a starship across the Universe divide.
And when I reach the other side,
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can.
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again.
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain;
But I will remain.
And I'll be back again,

And again and again and again and again.

YES

I could not take it oh so seriously really
When you called and said you'd seen a UFO
But then it dawned on me the message in writing
Spelt out a meeting never dreamed of before

I looked out, in the night
Strange and startling
Was this voice of time just saying
There's got to be a linking of everyone
Got to be a centre
It all comes flooding back

Arriving thru eons of times immortal power of the future to behold
Vessels of a different impression, none that we could ever hope to have
known

So look out, in the night
Once they arrive
On that perennial light
Impress a bolder empire of energy
In the ships we see
The coming of outer space

You say there's no reason to conjure
With the force as it has been known to be see
You say I'm a fool, a believer
Put your feet on the earth it is green

But look out, in the night
Wait for they arrive
To start such sciences anew
Here it is the coming of outer space
Such a pure delight
The coming of outer space

Posted this one before, but i love it, so i'll gve it another airing!

Horslips - 'Book of Invasions'

I haven't heard that one since about 1978!:p

What about the Music soundtrack CD of Fire Walk With Me the Twin Peaks Film? Pretty weird, chilly, chill out jazz/blues stuff. I listen to it often.

Then there's the Goblin's soundtrack to Dario Argento's Suspira. Hoo Hah! Weird enough for any taste.

The Incredible String Band's Wee Tam and the Big Huge, Turbo-Celtic Twilight, folk rock.

The Ultimate Fortean Jazz Meister's must be Thelonius Monk, Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman.

I did have a very strange album, years ago, By a band called MU. Some of the band were ex-Captain Beefheart, Magic Band. I think they were named after Ancient Lemuria.

There's a piece about the band and the Mu Album (1972), on a site dedicated to the Captain.

Oh, Incredible String Band - I'd forgotten about them . . . I think I have one of their albums on vinyl somewhere around . . . 1000 spirits or the layers of the onion, or somethi'''''''''

Sorry about that - one of the rats walked over my keyboard!
